About Us
We are Becka and Zach, a couple who, in 2020, dreamt of sailing off into the big blue. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn't have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane.
However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on.

You said it, and I miss sailing. Life on a sailboat offers a unique sense of freedom and adventure. While it's true that you don't need to be wealthy to live on a sailing vessel, it's important you acknowledge that there can be substantial expenses occasionally, such as engine repairs, sail replacements, and marina fees. However, the overall cost often remains lower than maintaining a traditional home. I also believe the risks are comparable. Additionally, the unique adventures of meeting new people, making friends from different cultures, and providing them with support are priceless. You and fellow patrons gesture of helping the family with Starlink internet access, who assisted you when you had engine troubles, was incredibly kind and generous. I hope they use it for good things.
That said, I wonder if you have considered securing a vacant plot of land as a backup plan. Having a land-based HQ provides additional security and peace of mind, ensuring you have a place to return to if needed. Plus, it can serve as an investment or a seasonal retreat, balancing your adventurous salty lifestyle with the stability of a permanent residence, and perhaps homesteading.
I am 77 years old, I have trouble understanding how I spend so much staying alive and in our home. I wish I had done what you are doing. Your helping the couple with Starlink was superb, that is how life was when I was very young. You are living my dream so thanks for sharing with this old man

Remind people of the importance of learning the skills needed to maintain the boat on your own. The majority of your cost savings are from installing, diagnosing, maintaining, and replacing items on your own. Labor cost aren't an option on any budget. Another great video! Some people in the marine industry call them e.g. a mechanic, but they just know a bit of what they need to know.
The quality of their work is sometimes great, and at other time really bad, and if the owner is really unlucky the mechanic made it worse than before he started.
The cost of owning anything that you use will go up the more it is used, and the older it is. One big difference that most land based people don't take into consideration is, on a boat you are getting dual use out of it, your conveyance and your home, so to even come close to a comparison, you would need both your vehicle and home costs. It really a mote point as there is costs to everything, even eating. Love following your journey as you make your way around this beautiful planet.

By "real cost of sailing around the world" I would expect a break-down of total costs for a year. This would include marinas & moorings, canal tolls, maintenance, diesel & food, camera & broadcast equipment, medical insurance, visas, etc. Has the boat depreciated or appreciated? If it's the former this is also a cost. You've both given up jobs so some people would regard that as a cost. But this may be partially offset by RUclips-related income. Put all this (and anything I've forgotten) into a kind of balance sheet and you might arrive at a ballpark figure for the real cost of sailing around the world.

For the last 4 years RUclips and patron have funded their trip they have just returned to the UK last autumn after 7 years
These 2 said they spent all they had to buy the boat

@@charonstyxferrymanI know it differentiates a lot depending on a number of factors, but generally 100k subs is generally considered a large enough channel to be a full time job, and they do (at least recently) get a much higher view than most channels with that many. Having said that they have grown a lot lately so I would imagine it was a lot less.

What's that comment that cruisers use? Cruising is just boat maintenance in exotic places. Or similar :)
As another commenter has said. You can't really get by without developing the best skills possible. To do maintenance yourselves or manage the maintenance being done for you.
Your journey and its ups and downs, sometimes literally, could've broken your relationship.
I don't know whether your relationship was as strong as possible when you started. But, either way, you seem to work very well together. Becca looks like a very good encourager / coach and at the same time, more demonstrative of her concerns in the moment. Zac comes across as pretty dependable in the moment and very willing to open up about things when recapping later. Sorry, I'm not explaining this very well. Together, you seem like a very good mix of personality traits and skills. Complementary as much as a very good mix.
The financial explanation is VERY helpful. As it helps those of us hoping to follow in your footsteps, judge where to go and when and most importantly, how much to realistically budget.
Of all the RUclipsrs currently 'out there', objectively, I'd say that you're amongst the best.
For not using rose tinted glasses. For the high production values of what you publish, both in the raw content as well as the editing. I mean raw as in chasing all over town to 'book in' to a country, as well as filming right up to the point where you had to turn around in the river you explored in your latest video. Zac deserves something special for dicing with crocodiles!
I just realised why I admire you guys so much. You've had your moments of drama and disappointments etc., but you've literally kept calm and carried on ;) And, you don't use clickbait. Thank gawd! Now, I realise that you're only publishing what you choose to.
However, we all have our personal battles and dramas throughout life, so in choosing to focus on the sailing, exploring and people you meet along the way, is I believe, what makes your content so watchable. Happy travels :)
Working on an engine with the boat structure blocking your view and movement is certainly an emotional exercise on its own. Many sailors use a double-filter system for fuel and water to reduce risks with varied quality supplies all over the globe. Perhaps you may implement this at a certain point. Good luck with the adventures.
For being a young couple, you seem to have your stuff together, more than most of the other couples your age. So keep going this route you are taking and you will get to whatever the goal is.

Very nice video, storytelling (as usual). As to the "exponential" in costs, it's simply a matter of LOA being a linear (one dimensional) unit. Going from 30 feet to 40 feet length adds 33% in length, but the surface area associated with that number square and the volume number cubes. So anything that relates to the surface that relates to the 30..40 jump grows 78% and volume related to that 30..40 jump grows by 137%.
If you know the numbers for your boat, compare them to 1930 J-class Whirlwind (LOA 139 ft = 42.4 m - scrapped in 1935 - beam 21' 9" = 6.6 m - draft 15' 6" = 4.7 m - 158 Imp tons = 160.5 metric tonnes - 7,335 sq. ft sail area =- 681.4 sq. m)
The shear amount of lead under these sailing yachts alone is mind blowing and it relates to height above water, rig weight and this is probably area related, etc.. But the lever-effect and wind power are in there too. The 160 metric tonnes, really are a 3rd power thing. Only the interior of such a boat can weigh over 11 tonnes.
There's a handful of replicas now, that occasionally race, and I heard one of the owners say that he had not guessed that he would need some 30 people to race the boat. Talk about costs. Spending $€£ 10 million or more to buy one seems like a bargain to begin with. Exponential. Yes.
And you cannot sail into a nice marina with its draught.

Excluding race boat made of special super expensive materials: It's actually more about the displacement (weight), rather than length.
@@charonstyxferryman - my ship-designer engineer brother taught me 45 years ago that "length" indeed is the least dominant factor in hydrodynamics. That's the drag coefficient at play, in a way, I guess. The point here was about costs, not speed.
I chose to take out LOA as metaphor to illustrate my point, as that is a number that each and every sailor iterates everywhere.
Another engineer once told me "give me the industry and the weight and I'll tell you what it costs." Here industry (and its state of the art) function as his relative price density ;).
In a way you are saying the same thing as my "volume being a 3rd power" and that makes us generally end up with more displacement.
Or, I illustrated the remark in the video that costs associated with owning, and living on, a boat may be exponential to size.

As for the grounding for lightning, wouldn’t the path of least resistance be the mast shrouds rather than the mast itself (Mast being aluminum and the shrouds being steel). What I’ve seen people do, is attach jumper cables to the shrouds and put the other end of the cable in the water.
Another great episode! The part where you went up the river looked like a nice little adventure. Sharing some of the cost information helped put things into perspective. The phone call with the family you were able to help with internet was truly epic! I hope your RUclips income has grown enough to support your cruiser/adventure lifestyle to the fullest and hopefully build a nest egg for the future.

On lightning-protection: I always attach 2 meters of chain to all stays and shourds. Kept my boat safe (touch wood). Others say that doing that might be very attractive to lightning, creating the opposite of what one wants to achieve. I guess there are still things in nature we will never fully understand.

Only observation i would make is its usual to check the head bolts torque after a new head gasket ..then reset the valve clearences...but your mate probably took them straight down the extra bit. .. to avoid that.

You might want to look into growing your own sprouting greens grown from seeds in jars.. to give off grid fresh veg all you need is seeds and water .. photosynthesis does the rest. ..but you do need to learn a bit of how too first. 😉

Yes, that would be really useful, I was going to ask the same thing. It’s never very clear how the income compares to the outgoings. The effort to must put in to produce such good videos is hopefully rewarded!

Relative costs between different size boats are closer to the difference in displacement, not the difference in length.
It would be interesting to learn what Your cost average was for each month since leaving england, including maintenance and repairs.
I have always been told to put the chain around chain plates. I am not a rocket scientist. However, I would reconsider placing the chain around the mast

yoo leafcutter ants (@18:25) are crazy, they don't eat the leaves they use them to farm a fungus that they feed on and feed their larva , one of the only other living species too farm cool right 🤣 but not only that, the fungus isn't found anywhere else and is totally unique to leafcutter ants and as far as I remember we don't know where they got it, and that's wild to me, like did the ants engineer a mushroom that they use as their main food source? nature is mental. 😋

The family with the jungle B&B, life changing with the internet... Then you factor in the children's education from the internet and the exponential progress those few hundred pounds will make, it's just mind boggling...

Wrapping a chain around the mast? Is the mast wet? Does water conduct electricity? How do you suppose if the mast is struck by lightning will the electricity travel down the metal mast and decide to use the rusty chain to connect to the sea or continue down the mast to the engine which is grounded to the stainless steel shaft and immersed in the sea?
You try to create the shortest path to an electrical ground as possible.
Many boats have a thick insulated wire to bolt to the mast and toss over the side when in a lighting storm.
May or may not work but it will not hurt.

How has the rainman system held up for you guys? Have you ever used the smaller counter top RO systems to filter sea water? My wife and I are currently in the process of this exciting journey (selling everything we own including our house, business, cars and then buying a boat to travel the world). We plan on beginning the journey next April from Florida. Going off of this video, we currently have a $2,000 mortgage payment, pay $400-500 month for water and natural gas, $1,000 month on food, $900 a month in insurance policies, $700 a month in car payments and the list goes on to about $7,500 a month in expenses here in Texas. Boat life has to be cheaper haha.
You didn't really give us a "real" cost". You estimated most of your expenses. Other channels give us a breakdown on actual monthly costs.

Boat expenses are relative. In particular limited opportunities to earn money.
A lot of cruisers seem to skip Costa Rica for a variety of reasons. Which is a shame because it is otherwise a popular tourist and Ex-Pat location.

One related money question: did getting over 100k subscribers help with earnings? I noticed that at the same time, you decreased ads and sponsorship, which might have taken it in the other direction. Anyway, regardless, I love your channel and am so glad you're sharing your experiences with the world.
You asked what our costs are. My wife and I own our home - no mortgage. utilities, repairs and maintenance, real estate taxes, home insurance about $12.000 per year. Groceries for two seniors retired = $750 per month. Car 2019 Honda Insight Hybrid 38,372 miles = $1.31 per mile (includes original purchase price, car insurance, maintenance, tires, personal property tax, and gasoline). I assess my wife and I could live quite comfortably cruising as you do - except our age and health conditions prevent us from doing so. Still, you wanna trade places? :¬) Webhead USA
