@@reginaarnone4845 I have an addiction to alcohol but I don't drink anymore, but I didn't have any abuse I had a very loving upbringing, but alcoholism can be traced back in both sides of my family to prior generations, so I do think that is somewhat hereditary the gene that causes alcoholism and depression.
I watched the movie when it came out. Great film. I became aware of Gia after that. My mom died of AIDS from drug abuse. That's another reason I was interested in her story. Thanks for such a great tribute to her.
Me2. When it came out on HBO in 98, the commercial-soundtrack was the song, Heart Of Glass, by the band, Blondie. OxyContin was brand new, and we would listen to Blondie, and smoke the pills on tin foil. Good times.

In the modeling industry, Cindy Crawford was referred to as “Baby Gia” when she started out. Gia was beautiful, talented and incredibly damaged by her home life and the industry.

@@TheJpep2424 not all of them. With the right support in place and the desire to get clean it can be done. I pulled myself up and out of addiction 12 years ago and haven’t looked back. But I had people in my corner, a treatment plan that worked and I put in the work. Not everyone is so lucky.
I find Gia Carangi fascinating yet tragic. She came into modeling when it was just blonde and blue-eyed models back in the 70's. She and Janice Dickinson changed all of that. I still own the Self-Destruction of Gia DVD documentary. I also read Thing of Beauty and of course watched Gia starring Angelina Jolie.
I didn't know Gia was so young! No wonder she wanted someone with her! How scary that must have been to have been out on your own and so famous, so young... that's a lot of responsibility. She probably did need someone. RIP GIA! 💓

It's always so surreal to stand beside a grave. Especially with someone famous, the idea that you're literally standing six feet away from that person is a lot to take in.
I agree. I came across Nicole Brown Simpson’s grave in the same cemetery where my mom is laid to rest. Very surreal to see it, let alone all other graves.

Gia was a year older than me, so I definitely remember her. She was everywhere then. I would look through the fashion magazines, looking for photos of her. She was so beautiful.
I don't usualy feel sad looking at a grave, but Gia's grave really made me sad. I was a teenager when she was in Vogue and I remember thinking how amazing she was. Not just her looks, but she had this energy and personality that leapt off the page. I think I feel sad because the vibes at that time came flowing back to me. I can't describe it, but it was both free and fun and also dark times. There's something lonely about Gia's death.
Ah, you remember the dark cold fearful era of the 80s AIDS virus epidemic. I'm feeling really creepy as well! I was 23 in 1986 and was always worried. In those days we thought we could catch from toilet seats and drinking glasses at the bar. We didn't know. The 1980's was a time of excess, but I was not that person.

Yes indeed I know who Gia Carangi is. She was on the cover of Cosmopolitan and Vogue magazines, her supermodel qualities started way before the supermodel boom really began. In fact, she could arguably be called the first Were there other great models before Gia, absolutely. They are legends. Giants. But Gia was special. She had “it” in spades. Then the supermodels that came after her were fantastic in their own right. But Gia really holds a soft spot in my heart. May she rest in eternal peace.🙏❤️💫
When my ex was looking for names for our daughter he saw the name Gia and it made me think of her. She was sooo naturally beautiful and ended up with such tragedy. Thank You for visiting her grave site. May Gia be soaring in heaven as a Beautiful Angel.
I think of the movie and after watching angelina jolie do amazing in the role of Gia, I had to research her. She is more relatable than I'd ever imagine and she defines free and wild spirited . I had a best friend when I was a teen that reminded me of her . I always was a mother to her more than her friend and I wanted to protect her because she always was vulnerable and gullible . We drifted apart just for a short time and sadly she fell in deep with hard drugs and was in an abusive relationship. She died at age 20, just a kid and I still mourn her . She was like a beautiful bird that refused to be in any cage and she was so fearless. Those wildfire souls are rare to know and even with the few years I had my friendship with Tiffany , she really broke me out of my shell and I wouldn't be who I am today

I was in college from 1981 - 1985. Gia was unique and a free spirit. I'm so glad you gave a glimpse of her life to those too young to have known her while she was at the top of her game. Right about the time of my graduation, the horrors of AIDS began to be known. So many good, talented, and young people were tragically lost to this disease. The years following were quite sobering.
I'm a 37 year old woman living as far as can be on the other side of the world in Bangladesh and I watch your videos religiously. Even I know Gia. Watched the movie starring Jolie. Watched documentaries on her tragic and short life. I think its a generational thing. Younger Americans don't know a lot about their own country/pop culture these days. I remember this almost like yesterday. She was popular at a time when Stefanie Seymour was also popular. I think very few ppl almost remember Gia. I'm glad this is someone I remember in modeling. RIP forever, Gia. ❤
I'm from Philadelphia and I loved that movie. So sad. I am a recovering addict from opiates. I have been on a methadone clinic for six and a half years. I wish Gia could've saved her life like I saved mine. I am 52 years young.

Crazy... Gia grew up 18 minutes from where I live now. I used to live about 5 minutes from her childhood home from 2000-2008. My brother went to Lincoln High School. I never knew she was from Philadelphia. I think I saw the movie ages ago, but I'll have to re-watch it. Thanks for another great video!
So after watching this video I went and watched Gia, I had never heard of her. All I can say is wow! What a story, what a beautiful soul, and beautiful woman!

Gia and I went to the same HS. She graduated as I was starting. We lived very close to one another also. Coincidentally, I became a fashion magazine photographer and my career lasted 40 years. We moved in the exact same circles but I never worked with her. Drugs were a serious issue back then and I would have to shoot models from Elite and Ford that couldn't even stand. It was horrible. I would get so angry at the modeling agencies for not properly looking after their talent. Eventually, that became the style of "heroin chic." I made it out of that career alive and she didn't. I think about that. Another grave close by is that of Nancy Spungen. It is believed Sid Vicious' ashes were sprinkled on it.
The reasons I love your videos are because of the sensitivity and respect in which you tell the story. Well done.

I didn't remember Gia until one of my sisters talked about seeing the movie a few years ago. It's such a hard life,being in the fashion industry. Celebrities fall prey to the drug pushers. You, as always, did a wonderful job with telling her story.

This was very well done and respectful. Thank you for showcasing her close relationship with her mother. There's been some speculation on thier relationship by others and it was great to learn that they attended Bowie concerts together despite her mother having no idea of him. Gia is also in the Blondie music video Atomic, where she can be seen briefly dancing within the crowd. Her story is heartbreakingly sad and her life too short.

I was in my 20’s when her cover on Cosmopolitan in that yellow swimsuit stopped me in my tracks on the magazine rack. Absolutely gorgeous! She was my icon model back in the day. I’m 62 now.

Such a sad story. I remember her. We were the same age. Saw the movie and read the book several times. I to struggled with addiction. Made the rounds of rehabs and psych wards . She was one of us who didn't make it

I also told them about the total nude she took with her then lover and make up artist Sandy Linter and it was the photo of all photos that catapulted her career. It could go into a time capsule being back then women didn't trim there original era did the photo you can see G is bushel that stops time right in its tracks. Chris Von WanGenheim took the black in white photos they are beautifully done certainly not tasteless. Gia loved her nudes. Sad story I was shock to find out her skin was falling off her bones when the car that was getting her ready for burial, her skin on her back slip completely off. Then to find out her networth was just ten grand sad. I can't believe she's alone in that grave with no special headstone . I'm glad they did this video many don't know of Gia. I have only ever seen the film and found it so sad. This is one thing that makes me thankfull for the simple things like having a roof over my head and a bed to sleep in. Thank you guys for the video, I first learned of Gia in the early 2000s due to a book and then I watched the Angelina Jolie movie which was just amazing. Gia was certainly the first Supermodel, she was beautiful long before they had photoshop, she just naturally had it! Cindy Crawford was called Baby Gia when she came out. If Gia had lived I have no doubt she would have finally gotten herself together and kept modeling and probably have even been modeling today in her 60s. Thank you for the respectful video on Gia and for showing her resting place. Be careful on your trip guys and I hope it's starting to warm up for you guys like it has been the past few days down in southwestern Virginia.
So glad you did one on Gia. I first heard of her in the early 90's. I saw a book of the photographer Francesco Scavullo. He used to do the Cosmopolitan magazine covers back in the 70's and 80's. He had pictures of Gia in there. She was so beautiful, but what was cool about her was she had an edge that models at the time didn't have. Angelina did an amazing job on the movie of her.

I don't think there were any medicines for HIV that she could have taken back then in that time like she could now if she were alive I'm sure she would be living a happy healthy life there are countless people in the world with HIV
@@juanitamorgan5475 hiv is not the same as aids. There’s no treatment for aids. If not treated in time hiv turns to aids. But it’s rare to die of it now due to antiviral meds. It’s stops aids from developing. I really think people should study it as it does confuse people.
The movie was very sympathetic to Gia and very positive about her role in modeling. I remember the movie saying how amazing Gia was as a model and how she threw her career away. It also seemed to argue that Gia was emotionally troubled and took to drugs to adapt veto a crazy personal life at home with a mother who she loved but had a lot of conflicts. If my memory is right, the movie suggested that Gia had some feelings toward women as love partners and may have preferred both sexes for romance. Angelina Jolie was terrific as Gia and gave a true to life performance and conveyed that Gia's emotional problems were so unresolved that it lead to drugs and an unstable life. The movie made clear Gia's role in modeling and her stature as a modeling superstar.

I am quite a bit old enough to remember her being on that cover of Vogue and send the way that she dressed and me being from a small town her wearing the ripped jeans a leather jacket I understood. That's why I got kicked out of school a lot because I was a country girl but I was really deeply a city girl. What a wonderful video, I saw the movie back when I was in high school back in the 90s and since then her name has always been in m life, She had a punk rock attitude with beauty and its so awesome to know she was the first supermodel that worked with luxury brands like Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, I always told myself if I had a daughter I would name her Gia, Awesome video. 🥀

Thank you so much for doing this piece. I didn't know who Gia was until the movie either. And although she was 19 years older than myself, I was obsessed with models during the 90s. And then became obsessed with Angelina for this specific role. I had pictures of Christy Turlington all over my walls. And my bedroom was in the Attic of my home in high school, and picture if you will and a frame room, covered in the most beautiful pictures of models throughout time. I loved beautiful photos... and art. Hearing Gia's story hurt my heart so badly at that age, because I was terrified of AIDS. And to hear she died of it at 26, really stuck with me. She was the first woman to have left a notch in my soul... years later, I became an addict of opiods. (Pills) Thank goodness I never ever tried Heroin... or I would be gone myself. Also... years later, in 98' I met Diana Ross at an airport I worked at in Phoenix. So watching this, brings Gia's spirit back to me. I love her. I always will. ♥️

I’m 65 years old and I watched her become famous and her incredibly heartbreaking spiral down to death. In that era we had no help for mental illness either and you sure as hell didn’t talk about
Thank you for keeping Gia's story alive. To hell with all her so-called friends who only used her to get rich on her name and who dropped her like a stone when she needed real help. They didn't even have a special gravestone for her. This is proof of how those so-called VIPs exist. Empty in their heads and only hungry for money by using someone else.
I read a biography about her many years ago and watched the movie on the back of that. Really sad story but a really interesting life. Good choice for a video and good that you're helping keep her story alive.

When I was a teenager in the 80s I knew about gia. But I never saw the movie. I need to see that. She was such a beautiful girl and it was so sad when she passed at such a young age. Thank you for doing this video and sharing it with all of us so we can get to know gia a little more
Wowzer I'm now 53 I never ever heard of Gia. 10 years after I was born she 1960 I'm 1970. Heroin or down a curse drug in them times my mother got addicted to. I guess when Gia went for them cigarettes, it was more for that fix that led to her demise or black listed!? The similarities between her and Cindy Crawford wow, now I recall her in my early days when she was super model and a half. ❤😢😊 Great documentary about Gia thanks.
The movie Gia came on late at night in 2001. I was a senior in high school at the time and decided to watch it by myself. It kind of messed me up for a while. I would think about that movie and the events all the time years after. Especially since overtime I had my own experiences with drug users and my own use. Luckily I grew out of it before it killed me, but many of my friends did not have the same luck. 😞

I remember a woman telling her there’s always somebody behind you waiting for your turn. This is when Gia was telling her she wanted to take a break and the woman told her no she needed to keep going.
There's only one reason I know who this is. Sorry, Grim Collective, you guys are young. Even those of us who lost family members to AIDS like I did (my older brother), it was the movie on cable and our teenage urges. My brother found out the same way, because of pneumonia. Rip Gia and my Brother and best friend Kent.

I have a Uncle who just under went a double lung donation after Covid but almost died in a car wreck in 1985 & Recieved tainted blood Compliments of Clinton's untested AIDS riddled blood supply. I’m old enough to remember her layouts in magazines. She was an extraordinary model and it shook everyone up in her generation when she died so young. Many of us looked up to her and wanted to BE her. She was SO beautiful!!!😢

I grew up in Philly during the 70s and early 80s. The media & people in the city talked about 2 girls from Philly "making it" at about the same time: Lisa Peluso who starred as Travolta's sister in Saturday Night Fever & on a popular soap Search for Tomorrow and Gia Carangi. Gia's meteoric rise to fame was spectacular, but her life story is such a tragedy. Thank you for sharing Gia's life story.

I haven’t seen the movie, Gia. I know little about Gia’s life. I’d read on Wikipedia that Gia’s parents had an unstable, violent relationship that led her mother to abandoning the family.
That could explain Gia's neediness for companionship, or just to fill that void in her life. Sad her closest friend passed

I always greatly appreciate your deep dives into famous and tragic celebrities. I was born in 1985 so I had very little idea who the true Gia was in real life. It's a terribly sad story of a beautiful life taken far too soon.

I always thought the GIA story was very interesting and sad. She had a very exciting and tragic life! The 15 years of the beginnings AIDS, took a lot of good people. I think how lucky I was to escape that, as I was very young through those years. It could have been any of us.

Thank you so much for this video. I first found out about Gia back in the mid nineties in a magazine article. She was just so very beautiful and fascinating to me. Cindy Crawford was called baby Gia, back when she first started modeling.

I read the book when I was a young teen. Was really taken away with her beauty & persona, but also really fascinated with the descriptions of New York at that time, the modeling world, the drugs, Studio 54, David Bowie…her world. Despite the chaos her life turned into, I found her story really inspiring & exciting. RIP Gia

Hi there! I'm Brazilian and I saw Angelina's movie playing Gia. Then I had to search for more info about this stunning and brave top model. Her story amazes me. Even though she had a terrible issue with drugs, she always showed herself the way she was and that was for me her greatest quality. She did not like to follow rules of the model business, she'd break them all instead. Gia was fabulous and no one can take that from her. I hate drugs because of what they did to her. She will forever shine in a better world beyond us. Loved the video btw! Kind regards from Brazil!
