If the ball placement isn't consistent and at the proper angle, that would definitely affect the kicks. Another way to look at this is every little element that is off from ideal will decrease the margin of error.

Right?! You can’t tell me Gould never kicked a badly 1:37 snapped ball or laces facing the wrong direction. The guy was clutch. Moody lives up to his name.
Gould was clutch as hell and hit everything BUT, in the new era of 50+ kicks, Gould could not compete with that. He has the clutch gene but did not have a strong leg. Its a big reason they drafted Moody so high. He was known for huge kicks in college. Massive leg. He has the yeps and dont know how he fixes it because its always at the most critical times.
He's not trash he developed into a great kicker till he got hurt .. we should of kept the day we got for our first bad skid then used him let moody grow . Remember Gould started for the bears with a lower grade
He has dealt with inconsistent play around him and it’s hard for a kicker to be solid with this type of play from his holder. He will get competition this offseason, but both will have to deal with same holder
Thank you. I've commented more than once over the last couple of years that the snapper and holder are critical parts of the equation for a successful FG. I state this from personal experience of being starting holder for two years in HS (starting punter like Wish and 2nd string QB... I also did some placekicking in practice in case a backup was needed). It matters. And it's not like the kicker can wait for everything to be "right"... he's in motion as soon as the snap starts.
I didnt even think about how he has a different place holder. I remember Mitch and Taybor have said before they have to be perfect at their jobs / take blame (for bad snap and or placement) before its on the kicker.. but I’m sure based on the 2 games SF will bring in competition. lol

If Moody is kicking hurt and it's causing him to miss, then he shouldn't be kicking. He's costing the team wins. His replacements coming off the street were 5 for 5, the team was fine without him. Thanks for pointing out the issues with the holder angling the ball wrong; there's no way Moody can make up for a ball that's slanted. Must be why the holder was pounding the field when he knew he screwed up.
The replacements had Mitch holding if I recall correctly. I’m a Moody critic and don’t think 49ers should have drafted him but this entire unit has been atrocious
i’m a michigan fan so i’ve watched a lot of jake moody. he’s a solid kicker the problem is he needs everything to be perfect in terms of snap and hold because he can’t adjust on the fly. (had that problem at michigan) secondly he kicks it too far right a lot instead of aiming dead center. thirdly he’s lost confidence so what he needs is basic kicks for a while then medium kicks combined with basic kicks and THEN long distance when they feel he’s ready. lions did that process with jake bates. bates didn’t get to kick long distance until november, been lights out cause of it. moody will be fine but definitely needs competition! great video btw, glad it popped up in my algorithm.
Yep. And add to that the high ankle. And to that the cumulative impact on his confidence (not just in himself but also the snap/hold). Then the negativity of the fan base and media scrutiny. I hope he turns it around.
Yeah, I’ve seen other “RUclips creators” complain about Moody mostly Brad with SF49ers. I stuck up for Moody because he was coming off as a Bandwagon fan complaining about the lions game being a loss before it was played and then complaining after about Moody and not about the turnovers. I like Moody, he’s not what we had with Robbie but I think he’s a solid kicker. The team as a whole needs help, we Need a better DC and actually OC and the both the OL and DL are going to need so solid players.
Nice breakdown but Moody was struggling last year and it didn't surprise me. He was drafted for power that Robbie Gould didn't have anymore. Competition will be brought in but Moody deserves the chance to compete

It’s worth pointing out Moodys 13/14 pre injury stats while good doesn’t totally tell the story because that 1 miss was very detrimental to the early part of this season. 50 yard FG that could have sealed Rams game week 3. He also missed a HUGE pat in the Super Bowl. That’s not a reason to just cut him if the holder really is an issue but that is concerning if we keep him around. Also, both those kicks mentioned had wish as the holder. Food for thought. Faithful forever
You're right, it's a concern, but it's hard to place the blame solely on him. I am definitely of the opinion they should not have drafted Moody. I hope they bring In more competition this offseason and not just roll with Moody because they picked him.

This may be quite the task but I’d be very interested in you doing a video on the vanilla play calling we’ve seen from Kyle vs what we saw in Detroit last week and what the outcomes of games are. Last week was some what eye opening in the sense where it seems like when Kyle throws caution into the wind the offense is almost impossible to stop and when he’s playing not to lose we end up doing just that. Games like 2019 bengals game come to mind where defenders are just lost with his play calling (they were the worst team in the nfl that year) so there may be nothing here
The PAT during the Superbowl was blocked, not missed. Compare the blocked PAT head-to-head with KC's blocked FG to win the game against Denver earlier this year... SAME PLAY... same alignment - they overloaded the left side of the line and the same person (Leo Chenal) got the same hand on the ball. KC puts some time and practice into their special teams and it shows. It saved the game against Denver, and arguably won the SB against the 49ers. And yes, I know Moody said he kicked it too low... but he's being a good 49er and not throwing other players under the bus. Watch the play... KC got a good surge/penetration on the left side of the line and Leo got a well timed jump with his arm in the air... it's not like Moody hit the OL in the back with the ball or anything... if Leo didn't get a hand on it, the kick would have been good.
The problem with Moody was precedent, also in the previous season he missed some field goals generally to the right, now he is missing to the left. The holder is a really good point, but changed the holder the problem can persist, in a less evident mode, but can persist. We have to ask ourself if we want to continue to lose important points because of the kicker and kicking team. Also 84% (past season) of kicks is not a so good percentage, top kickers are around 90%, Gould was.
No they had Mitch. I’m not saying moody is perfect or even necessarily good (I’m an outspoken critic). But I think issues are deeper than just replacing him blindly
The kid was fire in college but my opinion is I don't know if he can handle the pressure of pro football 🏈 I hope he works it out but that's a chance all teams take with a new kicker.
I guess I didn’t think about how important the holder is. It’s just assumed that every holder in the NFL is good, or they wouldn’t be in the NFL. Apparently, that’s not the case. Snapper is pretty important too. A bad snap results in a bad hold which causes a bad kick.

Don't give up on Jake Moody yet! Give him the off season and next season's training camp/preseason to work with the snapper and holder to get back to where he was before the injury set-backs. Jake Moody is too good to give up on, considering his recent negative circustances.
Moody *just* missed a 47-harder as this came into my feed. I’m still not holding my breath, but for the first time all season I am willing to offer a little grace…a little…if he somehow survives the offseason & performs well next year.

At this point I say let the competition play out and may the best kicker win. The kicker that sub in while he was out did good but his leg was not as strong I think.. but we need a kicker that is consistent and clutch.

Raw percentage is not a good measure of accuracy. Long kicks, e.g., those over 50 yards are not gimmes for any kicker, but a raw 84 percent is still not good. Missing PATs and short field goals is an issue. What seems like an inordinately large number of PATs and short FGs also just seem to squeak through the uprights, either left or right. This is also not good. The short ones should go right down the middle. They shouldn't be nail biters. Let's hope he can straighten this out, as his strong leg is a plus, but not if the accuracy issues continue. You'd think the holder would be the easiest problem to fix. I mean you've got back up QBs, all sorts of running backs and receivers.
Nice take man but that doesn’t explain all the other misses. Also, when moody was hurt, this wasn’t an issue. Their kickers made their FG. Sebas had struggles early in his career and moody has a boot. Just needs to get it together
Well put Moody isn’t without blame but there are other issues. I don’t think they should’ve drafted Moody, but I do think Kyle will give him an opportunity to win his job this offseason because of the issues around him
How much does Moodys follow through have to do with the misses. He seems to always be leaning toward the direction of his misses not down the middle of goal posts. Just a thought.
Agree the holder is not good. The holder does not have the ball vertical. The ball was leaning in the direction of the miss even today. Special teams coach needs to correct this.
For 3rd round pick kicker He better be above 80% minimum no matter what. The lions got a rando to kick and doing it well. Good Kicker aren’t as hard to find as good qbs. Getting a kicker before the 5th round is just dumb
If everyone all knows this, especially on how highly filming is analyzed and reviewed of the root cause/reason and to help better coach, then it sounds like an internal political issue. Either the organization is trying to give reason to get rid or push Moody out. Thus is it quiet quitting on Moody's part, not focus not in the game any more. The ball holder and kicker need to be sync in communicating with each outer at all times. If Moody is the main lead kicker, as a leader he should of brought this up immediate attention and or more so coaches should of already been fully aware. It is 2025, with all HD cameras, techniques and highly professional experiences coaches, this should have never been an issue. Any other kicker from college can sure make them field goals in a heart beat, especially if are hungry for it.. This is a tale tale sign that Kyle's Shanahan coaching staff is deteriorating and is reflecting off of the players as well. Ok, now that we seen this video please compare and contrast with another team kicker/holder that has similar issue on how the ball is setup by the ball holder.
I blame Shanahan first, the Special teams coordinator, and Moody. If the holder is an issue, Moody should have brought it up. If this is consistent on tape, the coaches should get fired too.
Thats nuts bro Ive never seen anyone ever lean the ball forward. I still think its Moody. His kicks are off right at contact with his foot. I dont like him under pressure he doesnt get his head right. His power (everybody said he had a club) he doesnt impress me on kick offs he should be able to hit the end zone. Hes been blocked, hes been short from 50+, even when he makes them they are barely in. 2023 was better by a ways but man you better go see Yoda this off season.
Tyler Bass is the kicker for my Bills. He’s only missed a fraction of the kicks Moody screwed up. And my fellow Bills fans _already_ want to kick him to the curb. Moody will be watching from the couch next season.
If he's still hurt he should say something, and the punter holding the ball has nothing to do with it. I'm pretty sure they practice together. Moody missed crucial kicks last year too

Okay but what about Fred warner running around all season tackling guys with a fractured foot? Id love for his inaccuracy to be because of his older injury but he has messed up in big games before where we lost because he couldn't make the kick in stressful situations. Go even farther, the first one you describe, yeah the hold is bad, but the snap is pretty bad as well. Even more important for tge snap to be perfect in fg than it is a punt because they gotta catch it and place it so fast.
Ehhh. I think the coaches and people making millions reviewing film would have brought this to Shanahans attention and the holder would have been replaced or corrected. Moody has also never hinted at the holder being an issue.
You see I’ve been saying the root of the problem with this year is the mf coaching the lack of preparation and injury management is A$$ if a guy isn’t ready don’t put him in if we can’t kick go for it if we can’t pass protect run the ball but this team keeps doing the opposite. Gotta get that fixed
I gotta disagree. The injury didn't help, but despite Moody's good % last year, the fanbase still did not trust him at all anytime he kicked. The reason being he was ALWAYS erratic. Way too many of his MADE FGs from last year were barely making it in by the skin of his teeth. And it wasn't just long tries. Plenty of them should've been chip shots and if they were a few yards longer still would've missed. His overall mechanics have been as inconsistent as the holder, even when healthy. Those balls that were breaking into the goalposts last year are just breaking a little bit wider this year, because it was just a matter of time.
Other kickers had to deal with the same thing moody isn’t consistent at all and others team would’ve got rid off him half thru his rookie season the niners have been way to patient with him after giving numerous chances to redeem himself this year during a down year.

Nice job! You made several valid analytical points. Moody is a good kicker but all the facets need to come together for the kick to be good.
Moody can be good but there are definitely things to work on. Namely he seems to have a mental holdup in clutch situations

KC got a good surge/penetration on the left side of the line and Leo got a well timed jump with his arm in the air... it's not like Moody hit the OL in the back with the ball or anything... if Leo didn't get a hand on it, the kick would have been good.

The problem with Moody was precedent, also in the previous season he missed some field goals generally to the right, now he is missing to the left. The holder is a really good point, but changed the holder the problem can persist, in a less evident mode, but can persist. We have to ask ourself if we want to continue to lose important points because of the kicker and kicking team. Also 84% (past season) of kicks is not a so good percentage, top kickers are around 90%, Gould was.
High ankle sprain is no joke. It's very nasty torn ligaments.

No they had Mitch. I’m not saying moody is perfect or even necessarily good (I’m an outspoken critic). But I think issues are deeper than just replacing him blindly

I guess I didn’t think about how important the holder is. It’s just assumed that every holder in the NFL is good, or they wouldn’t be in the NFL. Apparently, that’s not the case. Snapper is pretty important too. A bad snap results in a bad hold which causes a bad kick.

Don't give up on Jake Moody yet! Give him the off season and next season's training camp/preseason to work with the snapper and holder to get back to where he was before the injury set-backs. Jake Moody is too good to give up on, considering his recent negative circustances.

Moody *just* missed a 47-harder as this came into my feed. I’m still not holding my breath, but for the first time all season I am willing to offer a little grace…a little…if he somehow survives the offseason & performs well next year.

At this point I say let the competition play out and may the best kicker win. The kicker that sub in while he was out did good but his leg was not as strong I think.. but we need a kicker that is consistent and clutch.
It also seems weird that he’s holding with his left hand. Seems like you’d want the arm on the other side of the body from the kicker.
So in summary... Finkle is Moody, Moody is Finkle.
We will see. Why didn’t they just have wishnowsky just hold it then?? I know it takes up a roster spot but it’s worth the points to be gained in my book.

Raw percentage is not a good measure of accuracy. Long kicks, e.g., those over 50 yards are not gimmes for any kicker, but a raw 84 percent is still not good. Missing PATs and short field goals is an issue. What seems like an inordinately large number of PATs and short FGs also just seem to squeak through the uprights, either left or right. This is also not good. The short ones should go right down the middle. They shouldn't be nail biters. Let's hope he can straighten this out, as his strong leg is a plus, but not if the accuracy issues continue. You'd think the holder would be the easiest problem to fix. I mean you've got back up QBs, all sorts of running backs and receivers.
Nice take man but that doesn’t explain all the other misses. Also, when moody was hurt, this wasn’t an issue. Their kickers made their FG. Sebas had struggles early in his career and moody has a boot. Just needs to get it together
Well put Moody isn’t without blame but there are other issues. I don’t think they should’ve drafted Moody, but I do think Kyle will give him an opportunity to win his job this offseason because of the issues around him
How much does Moodys follow through have to do with the misses. He seems to always be leaning toward the direction of his misses not down the middle of goal posts. Just a thought.
Agree the holder is not good. The holder does not have the ball vertical. The ball was leaning in the direction of the miss even today. Special teams coach needs to correct this.

If everyone all knows this, especially on how highly filming is analyzed and reviewed of the root cause/reason and to help better coach, then it sounds like an internal political issue. Either the organization is trying to give reason to get rid or push Moody out. Thus is it quiet quitting on Moody's part, not focus not in the game any more. The ball holder and kicker need to be sync in communicating with each outer at all times. If Moody is the main lead kicker, as a leader he should of brought this up immediate attention and or more so coaches should of already been fully aware. It is 2025, with all HD cameras, techniques and highly professional experiences coaches, this should have never been an issue. Any other kicker from college can sure make them field goals in a heart beat, especially if are hungry for it.. This is a tale tale sign that Kyle's Shanahan coaching staff is deteriorating and is reflecting off of the players as well. Ok, now that we seen this video please compare and contrast with another team kicker/holder that has similar issue on how the ball is setup by the ball holder.
I blame Shanahan first, the Special teams coordinator, and Moody. If the holder is an issue, Moody should have brought it up. If this is consistent on tape, the coaches should get fired too.
Thats nuts bro Ive never seen anyone ever lean the ball forward. I still think its Moody. His kicks are off right at contact with his foot. I dont like him under pressure he doesnt get his head right. His power (everybody said he had a club) he doesnt impress me on kick offs he should be able to hit the end zone. Hes been blocked, hes been short from 50+, even when he makes them they are barely in. 2023 was better by a ways but man you better go see Yoda this off season.

Tyler Bass is the kicker for my Bills. He’s only missed a fraction of the kicks Moody screwed up. And my fellow Bills fans _already_ want to kick him to the curb. Moody will be watching from the couch next season.

@@Wizez With two kickers hurt on Kick Returns. And the punter hurt. With the backup punter not being a good holder. Not to mention giving up a kick return TD in some games early on. Yeah the Special Teams was the issue this entire season.

Id love for his inaccuracy to be because of his older injury but he has messed up in big games before where we lost because he couldn't make the kick in stressful situations. I'm not a kicker or a football player so idk the stress of it. I'm no expert whatsoever but we have big niners fans and ex players like Richard Sherman calling for Jake Moody to move on from the Niners. You still make great points though

Go even farther, the first one you describe, yeah the hold is bad, but the snap is pretty bad as well. Even more important for tge snap to be perfect in fg than it is a punt because they gotta catch it and place it so fast.

Ehhh. I think the coaches and people making millions reviewing film would have brought this to Shanahans attention and the holder would have been replaced or corrected. Moody has also never hinted at the holder being an issue.

You see I’ve been saying the root of the problem with this year is the mf coaching the lack of preparation and injury management is A$$ if a guy isn’t ready don’t put him in if we can’t kick go for it if we can’t pass protect run the ball but this team keeps doing the opposite. Gotta get that fixed
I gotta disagree. The injury didn't help, but despite Moody's good % last year, the fanbase still did not trust him at all anytime he kicked. The reason being he was ALWAYS erratic. Way too many of his MADE FGs from last year were barely making it in by the skin of his teeth. And it wasn't just long tries. Plenty of them should've been chip shots and if they were a few yards longer still would've missed. His overall mechanics have been as inconsistent as the holder, even when healthy. Those balls that were breaking into the goalposts last year are just breaking a little bit wider this year, because it was just a matter of time.
