This song is the core soundtrack and soul of the movie "Excess Baggage" (1997) starring Alicia Silverstone and Benicio del Toro. The plot is the story of a bratty teenager faking her own kidnapping, but gets mistakenly kidnapped for real.
Thank heavens for "On-Demand" TV. I watched the movie and was very impressed by this version of the Cars Song "All Mixed Up" Red House Painters did an awesome job on this. I really like this video as well.
Had a band mate burn this onto a CD in the late 90’s with two words written on the CD: “Must listen” 20+ years later I still must listen to this great tune.
His voice is very beautiful..........pleasant, and soothing. All of these comparisons to The Cars are irrelevant. Mark reimagined the song within his style and the power of his imagination, and succeeded brilliantly in showing us the way that simplicity and restraint can very often create something transcendent and deeply moving.................
+realitybites771 Yup. Same. I had it on a bootleg VHS and had to rewind it like 20 times to scroll through the credits to find who sang this song. Ahh the 90s...
25 years later and it still has a modern, contemporary vibe to it. So superior to the original. I've always loved this version. This is what a cover should be... a complete reinterpretation of the original.
I don't mind a faithful cover performed live, especially if the original artist is no longer with us. But I can't stand faithful or very close covers being released as singles or on album - smacks of passing it off as their own.
So sorry to hear about you loss. You might like the movie 'Wings of Desire' by Wim Wenders about angels wandering around Berlin and has a really similar peaceful and life-affirming vibe to this video (possibly of which it inspired).
WOW, what an interesting perspective! Fricking beautiful. This song is so dreamy and romantic. I sent it to someone I have very special feelings for ❤️🙏.
She shadows me in the mirror She never leaves on the light And some things that I say to her They just don't seem to bite It's all mixed up It's all mixed up It's all mixed up She tricks me into thinkin' I can't believe my eyes I wait for her forever But she never does arrive It's all mixed up It's all mixed up It's all mixed up She says to leave it to me (leave it to me) Everything'll be alright (be alright) She says to leave it to me (leave it to me) Everything'll be alright She's always out makin' pictures She's always out makin' scenes She's always out the window When it comes to makin' dreams It's all mixed up It's all mixed up It's all mixed up She says to leave it to me (leave it to me) Everything'll be alright (be alright) She says to leave it to me (leave it to me) Everything'll be alright (be alright) She says to leave it to me (leave it to me) Everything'll be alright (be alright) She says to leave it to me, yeah (leave it to me) Everything'll be alright (be alright) If you leave it to me (leave it to me) Everything'll be alright (be alright) Yeah, if you leave it to me (leave it to me) (be alright)
i love the movie excess baggage and this song really nailed to every single shot of benicio and alicia. gosh....the young benicio is the hottest thing on this movie.
Always liked this version, I wasn't very old when I heard it may be 12-13, but I think it's one of the best Redo's i've ever heard and I always loved the Cars 😊
For Some Reason Wherever I Heard This,I Always Thought It Was The Cars But Ric Ocasics Voice Wasn't Quite Right. But The Song Is Timeless , Magical And Memorable. love The Strings Blue Grass Sound Buildup Then The Crescendo And Back Again like A Wonderful Ride Around The Ferris Wheel. Exiting And A Overwhelmingly Satisfying High. This Is A Great Band With Great Lyrics.Wish They Had Gotten More Radio Play..
I first heard Sun Kil Moon "Ghosts of the Great Highway" - and its still my favorite. I've been listening to all Sun Kil Moon and Red House Painters now - so "listening backwards". Two great but relatively unknown bands worth checking out for sure.
i met him recently, he is an awesome guy and doesn't act like a celebrity, so i didn't treat him like one. I didn't even ask for a photo. he was just stood outside the gig casually chatting to some of his friends.
Kasia so true, I met him in the toilet of the venue where he was going to play (in rhp yearsss back) in a bit and I was staggered by his down to earth attitude, apart from being absolutely starstrucked as I was (and I still am) totally "in love" with his music, yet with had a little conversation to the point to both go to urinate at the same time whilst still chatting about, just like you do with an old friend! The coolest really
Pretty sure Ric Ocasek would be flattered by the way his song was played with such emotional weight here. Remember folks, different arrangements have been in music since before the advent of the electric guitar and it has never been seen as "ruining" a classic.
This song is so brilliant, love the black and white, more powerful, Mark K., was a total hunk back then........, what a deep and intellectual soul, thanks for speaking to mine!!!!!!!!
Love the movie, Excess Baggage. Benicio Del Toro looked so cute (I just love the way he talked in the movie, I don't know why though) then and you gotta love Alicia Silverstone!
Well it’s different. Me being a cars expert and this being one of my favs from them, I’m biased of course. Nothing can come close to Ben and the sounds of the original.
This used to be one of my favorite songs... one time at a show he just broke it out.. and I let out a "yeah!" and he stopped and said , what the fuck? Is this a jack Johnson show? hahah right response... we all make mistakes
First time ever seeing this video. It didn't come up ever before. This song popped in my head and bam...the video I've never seen before. I saw Excess Baggage in the theater and I waited to see who this was in the ending credits back in the 90's. Beautiful song that blows away the original. I can't even listen to the original.
I loved the movie and the song so much I recorded it on my phone from the TV to find it. I loved it my loved ones viewers and commentators. I wish you a happy life, even if I didn't meet you.
I just watched Excess Baggage on HBO Max. I love this version of the Cars song. His voice is beautiful. Great song and movie. Excess Baggage is one of my favourite movies.
People talk shit on Mark Kozelek for covering Modest Mouse, but THIS cover of a Cars song is completely superior to the original. This is how you do it.
Yes I have and I prefer Benjamin Orr's voice and Elliot Easton's guitar playing. I guess personally this particular cover does not suit my taste. No harm done I hope.
I think one of the biggest heartbreaks of this video is at 2:06 when she is crying and you see both world trade centers in the backround. Like you could look at this today and think to yourself she is mourning for those towers knowing what their future beheld at the time of this video releasing. Very symbolic looking back in hindsight
It's a cover from the Cars. Very different but their take is still very nice in RHP's interpretation as well. It's nice to see how far The Car's influence reached...
Someone feel free to help me figure this out. I specifically remember, although I could have been mistaken, a version of Sting’s ‘Valparaiso’ performed by one of the bands Mark Kozelek was in. I can’t find any trace of it today unfortunately, although I could have sworn there was a version of it somewhere. Anyone else remember or is this a Mandela effect?
Very creative and I really like the way the verses are done. I hope I can respectfully say though that I prefer the chorus chord progression and melody from the original by The Cars. .

Great film 🙂
Yes, it's, a good movie! 😃
Underrated film. Amazing soundtrack.
One of my favourite movies and soundtracks to this day! ❤
2024 it’s still all mixed up!!!
I love this version so much ❤😢
Excess Baggage!
Had a band mate burn this onto a CD in the late 90’s with two words written on the CD: “Must listen”
20+ years later I still must listen to this great tune.
Amazing!
was it rhp alnbum or mixed artists?))
His voice is very beautiful..........pleasant, and soothing. All of these comparisons to The Cars are irrelevant. He does have a very nice voice. Very personal and empathetic
@Luis Ferreiro - I have to agree with everything you said - no need to compare - this is a different version (and beautiful at that)!
This song made me fall in love with the movie "Excess Baggage."
And Del Toro :-)
realitybites771 same here!!! :'(
realitybites771 and me too. good times.
+realitybites771 Yup. Same. I had it on a bootleg VHS and had to rewind it like 20 times to scroll through the credits to find who sang this song. Ahh the 90s...
same here!
Still fire 🔥. Underrated, raw, authentic, deep. Low key masterpiece ❤ shout out excess baggage.

Look up SEA OF SOULS
This stands on it's own merit.. it's RHP after all.. but I wouldn't call it better than the original. Awesome song.
Check out RHP'S Have You Forgotten from the Vanilla Sky soundtrack if you haven't heard yet...haunting.
Not better than the original but a nice take on it, nonetheless
I watched this video so many times after my brother died. The angel comforted me.
Rip to your brother 🙏🏼
So sorry to hear about you loss. You might like the movie 'Wings of Desire' by Wim Wenders about angels wandering around Berlin and has a really similar peaceful and life-affirming vibe to this video (possibly of which it inspired).
That's, beautiful!
Hit like for EXCESS BAGGAGE!
Excess Baggage bought me here. One of my all time favourites. I love the soundtrack and how they fall so hard in love in the end....♡
Everyone was „bought“ 🤦♂️ here by Excess Baggage not only you!
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
For me it was THE UNITED STATES OF LEELAND. All star cast. Highly recommend if you can find it.
I've loved the original from The Cars since I heard it in the early 80's. But this... Holy crap. This version is heaven. Absolutely amazing.
Nobody does covers quite like Koz.
One of the most haunting musicians of the last 25 years.
Benjamin Orr did
@@robertgillen979exactly.
Sometimes it seems like he understands the song better than the person who wrote it. Tiny Cities...
Kind of song remake to lose your soul and explore the inner parts of the consciousness of one's mind.
WOW, what an interesting perspective! Fricking beautiful. This song is so dreamy and romantic. I sent it to someone I have very special feelings for ❤️🙏.
Beautiful dreamy song. Love song. ❤❤❤
@@NinaChristianson it's a beautiful melody and song twenty years later.♥️🌹🎶🎶
I could listen to this song forever..., has so many meanings for me.❤ 🎶
She shadows me in the mirror
She never leaves on the light
And some things that I say to her
They just don't seem to bite
It's all mixed up
It's all mixed up
It's all mixed up
She tricks me into thinkin'
I can't believe my eyes
I wait for her forever
But she never does arrive
It's all mixed up
It's all mixed up
It's all mixed up
She says to leave it to me
(leave it to me)
Everything'll be alright
(be alright)
She says to leave it to me
(leave it to me)
Everything'll be alright
She's always out makin' pictures
She's always out makin' scenes
She's always out the window
When it comes to makin' dreams
It's all mixed up
It's all mixed up
It's all mixed up
She says to leave it to me
(leave it to me)
Everything'll be alright
(be alright)
She says to leave it to me
(leave it to me)
Everything'll be alright
(be alright)
She says to leave it to me
(leave it to me)
Everything'll be alright
(be alright)
She says to leave it to me, yeah
(leave it to me)
Everything'll be alright
(be alright)
If you leave it to me
(leave it to me)
Everything'll be alright
(be alright)
Yeah, if you leave it to me
(leave it to me)
(be alright)
I always thought he said "She shatters me in the mirror"? I've been singing it wrong for years? Lol Thanks for the lyrics
Haissst… my favorite 😊
@@michaelfedorsha8147 Same here. lol
I saw Mark sing this live last night. Really moving.
For some reason this song almost always bring tears to my eyes.
i love the movie excess baggage and this song really nailed to every single shot of benicio and alicia. gosh....the young benicio is the hottest thing on this movie.
definitely
Always liked this version, I wasn't very old when I heard it may be 12-13, but I think it's one of the best Redo's i've ever heard and I always loved the Cars 😊
The Best Cover I have ever heard.
Unparalleled cover. Most bands pale in comparison. True artistry, here - ‘sadcore’ at its best.
I'm here because Bobby Lee doesn't know what subjective means. This is not for me.

RIP Ric Ocasek . one of my favourite of his songs.
Have a glorious Saturday morning. Greetings from Dublin, Ireland :)
excess baggage
She said leave it to me,
everything's gonna be alright.
One of my favorite lines in Rock music .
Beautiful song.
Great reinvention of a classic song.

Excess Baggage is one of my favorite movies. Love this song!
One of the best covers of a song by The Cars.
Excess baggage brought me here. 😍
whose here because of tiger belly
I love this song as much as the woman I never met
Pretty sure Ric Ocasek would be flattered by the way his song was played with such emotional weight here. Remember folks, different arrangements have been in music since before the advent of the electric guitar and it has never been seen as "ruining" a classic.
Joe Cocker: I get by with a little help from my friends. I don't think Ringo was insulted....
just don't make music the same
sun kil moon brought me here
This song is so brilliant, love the black and white, more powerful, Mark K., was a total hunk back then........, what a deep and intellectual soul, thanks for speaking to mine!!!!!!!!
bobby sent me to and i love this song
Love the movie, Excess Baggage. Benicio Del Toro looked so cute (I just love the way he talked in the movie, I don't know why though) then and you gotta love Alicia Silverstone!
Thanks Ric for all the music
This in my top 5 of songs I still share with people to discover Mark K. in all his incarnations.
This is exactly what I needed to hear right now.
Well it’s different. Me being a cars expert and this being one of my favs from them, I’m biased of course. Nothing can come close to Ben and the sounds of the original.
To hell with Excess Baggage. This song is stunning.
I think "Cars" would be proud this version! I love it...
This video has such a surreal feeling to it
In excess baggage it not only captures mood it creates it
The only bright spot in a rather dreary movie
70 people need psychological help... I'm here for you. 🤗
El Ram thank you for your comment
Terrific song. I don't prefer this version, but they certainly do a good job with it. Ric and Benjamin forever.
Heard this on an Alicia silverstone film probably 25 years ago.
Excess Baggage.
Sublime
This is like Walk on the Wild Side by Lou Reed meets Linger by the Cranberries.
This was given to me by a guy called Jay Flynn. He’d drop random mix tapes, talk about new music, then leave. Awesome guy, loved music. Thanks Jay.
I rediscovered these guys last night. i forgot how great they are. this video, as dated as it is, is also amazing.
I come here for this quiet, lovely song and get a 15 second Nicki Minaj commercial blasted at me. I feel like my ears just got raped. O_O
Poor xervello
Xervello AdBlocker really works. I forgot RUclips even HAS commercials.
+Xervello hahaha too funny
aye
Love this remake.
This used to be one of my favorite songs... one time at a show he just broke it out.. and I let out a "yeah!" and he stopped and said , what the fuck? Is this a jack Johnson show? hahah right response... we all make mistakes
I laughed so hard at this! I love this song so much.
I am so in love this this song!
A mini masterwork
Oh my God >>when those guitars erupt~ I love you Melisa
❤❤❤ I LOVE Excess Baggage!!!.. One of my favorite movies!!!....
fascinating.....absolutely love it !!
I'm Brazilian and I came to listen to the song because of the movie Excess Baggage (1997). Did anyone else come because of the movie ?
The movie is very nice. Alicia Silverstone was a beautiful girl.
And I'm like you.
I love this stripped down interpretation of this Cars' classic song!!
Im here cause of bobby lee. dang
...I just stopped talking to him because I grew tired of the fight.
This version is missing the beautiful piano solo :(
I beleive that is known as the extended version.

Yeah I think of excess baggage when I hear this song to and I love the song and movie
I came because of Tigerbelly its Bobby Lee's favorite band lol. Good music
I spent three grand on a surroundsound system Just in Speakers inherited the receiver sounds amazing through this
I love that movie too, and the music in it just makes it so amazing.
People talk shit on Mark Kozelek for covering Modest Mouse, but THIS cover of a Cars song is completely superior to the original. This is how you do it.
"superior to the original"? To each his own.
runningman1987
have you heard the original?
yeah this is a great cover. I'd also say that Mark's cover of Modest Mouse's "Space Travel is Boring" is better than the original.
Yes I have and I prefer Benjamin Orr's voice and Elliot Easton's guitar playing. I guess personally this particular cover does not suit my taste. No harm done I hope.
Completely superior to the original? Ha! that's funny
Couldn't find this song under RedHousePainters at Spotify but Mark Kozelek only
1:22 she shouldn't drink that

It's so awkward to see Mark in a music video
who's the gal with butterfly wings? looks really familiar
I'm starting to be a bit concerned about how much I love this man.
Ric's music got me through some tough times in my college years...
Look its the fairy goodmother on LsD
It took me several tries to get used to the RHP music. And then, I got hook until today. It's being 20 years now.
Someone feel free to help me figure this out. I specifically remember, although I could have been mistaken, a version of Sting’s ‘Valparaiso’ performed by one of the bands Mark Kozelek was in. This is the best cover of this song!
curioso ... como una versión puede ser tan buena y el original (The Cars ) olvidable
Very creative and I really like the way the verses are done. I hope I can respectfully say though that I prefer the chorus chord progression and melody from the original by The Cars. .
Esse filme é maravilhoso e essa música também.... Finalmente descobri quem cantava
Love this song and the movie Excess Baggage!
I didn’t even know this was a cover until now
