How to Find the Domain of Any Function (NancyPi)

- MIT grad shows a surefire way to find the domain of any function. To skip ahead: 1) For POLYNOMIAL only, skip to time 0:45. 2) For FRACTION only, skip to time 1:44. 3) For SQUARE ROOT only, skip to 5:08. 4) For SQUARE ROOT ON BOTTOM of Fraction, skip to 8:44. 5) For SQUARE ROOT ON TOP of Fraction, skip to 10:09. Nancy formerly of MathBFF explains the steps.
For how to SOLVE QUADRATIC equations by FACTORING, jump to: • How to Solve Quadratic...
For how to SOLVE INEQUALITIES, jump to: • How to Solve Inequalit...

For Domain, you just need to watch out for Square Roots and/or Fractions!
If your function is...
1) a POLYNOMIAL (no square roots or fractions), i.e. f(x) = x^2 + 3x + 1, domain is "all real numbers."
2) a FRACTION (w/ no square root), i.e. f(x) = (2x+1)/(x^2+5x+6). Set bottom "not equal" to zero. Solve for x.
3) a SQUARE ROOT (w/ no fraction), i.e. f(x) = sqrt(x+1). Set part under root "greater than or equal to zero".
4) a FRACTION w/ A SQUARE ROOT ON BOTTOM, i.e. f(x) = (x^2+2x+3)/(sqrt(x+1)). Set part under root "greater than zero." Solve the inequality. NOTE THE DIFFERENCE: You must set it greater than zero, not "greater than OR EQUAL TO zero" because we can't have zero (or square root of zero) in the denominator.
5) a FRACTION w/ A SQUARE ROOT ON TOP, i.e. f(x) = (sqrt(x+1))/(x^2+4), i) Set the bottom "not equal to" zero & solve; ii) Set what's under the root "greater than or equal to zero" & solve; iii) Take intersection of your two solutions.

this... this... this is talent... writing backwords??? this girl deserves a noble peace prize
She should have a spelling video, too, and maybe she just might win a Nobel prize.
Hahah. Actually i do think she recorded a selfie video. So,she wrote normally like us hehhe
actually anyone can write backwards with their non dominant hand. take a pencil in both hands and on two different pieces of paper or a whiteboard look straight ahead and try to write the same exact word with both hands. dont think about how, dont look at either hand. just write and look straight forward. its a mind trick I figured out in middle school. your dominant hand will be normal and the non dominant will be a mirror image. the left and right hemispheres of the brain control opposites sides of the body and can mirror each others movements if you just dont interfere by thinking about it. It freaks people out lol.
Get some brain
@@Miss__Victoria no it wont. if im a lefty, i will write from left to right. and so is my other hand.
44 seconds in, and I already understand better then my teacher or text-book has been able to outline! Thank you so much!

I got the same ad buddy, like what do you want? to pay for a shitty service for the same lessons lol.
ikr Mr.McLogan and her helps alot

I got the same as too😂😂
I always get that ad when I need math help😂
Can we all just take a second to appreciate that not only is she doing a great job teaching math, but she is doing it while writing it backwards from her perspective.
I recon she writes forward (for her) and then flips the video. Bottom line is we only know her backwards.
She's not writing backwards dude lol
@@Etk333 Look again. She is writing with her left hand going from HER right to HER left. That is backwards.
@@ryanwoodard5480 oh shit?? U might be right dude that's wild
@Ryan Woodard yeah, and that is exactly how it would look if she was writing normally with her right hand and then mirrored the video.
I like how she broke up the different types of questions we can get
If she didn't make her math videos, i would fail my math class. she's a saint.
Nancy, the combination of your speed, demeanor and your knowledge make you a great instructor
This video is literally exactly what I needed.
It's simple yet detailed which I really appreciate.
Only thing that's missing is domain of exponentials but other than that it's pretty much perfect

I have checked a lot of lectures but unable to understand this topic..But you made it simple🤩 ..Your way of teaching is impressive..
God bless you😊
I’ve had TWO different teachers explain this to me and nothing, I tried khan academy and nothing. But you is a blessing because I understand every. Single. Word.
That shows that everyone is unique.
Breh people swear on Khan Academy and I never know what that bro is talking about
Nancy, you are so helpful. You've helped me so many times when nobody else made sense. Please keep making these wonderful videos.
Because I can talk to this teacher، do you know him؟
@ivyttea random but ur pfp is gorgeous
You are the best, as a first year medical student this helped me more than my lecturer, its for 2018 but still useful in 2020. You are keeping me busy during this corona lockdown. May God bless you with more wisdom to share with us more.
THANK YOU! My Pre-cal professor was not able to explain this to me as you did! you just helped me pass my exam.
I watched kahn academy 5 times and nothing helped this makes so much more sense thanks
Khan academy is hit or miss sometimes with their guides
Wow I have never enjoyed math this much. You are so calm
Can we just have a round of applause for this lady. My savior in calculus.
Can you do a video on how to solve piecewise functions please? I am so confused on how to do it and love the way you explain how to do math! Your videos are amazing!
Me right now :
I swear im a senior in high school and this is the first time i understood wtf domain is, thank u!!
Her videos were very useful for me and now I can help other people with their algebra
I've gone through thousands of videos about this and non of them helped me one bit, but this video helped me tons a Million, She's amazing. Congratulations you earned yourself a new subscriber
Using this to review for my precalc 1 exam tomorrow wish me luck
Hope you aced it
Same
I got a 91/100
@@RubiMercuri wow Rubi tell me the secret am really bad at math
I’m going to take mine tomorrow let’s see how it goes
On the square root only section you have X^2 + 5X + 6. That factors into (X +3)(X + 2). Now you only flip an inequality sign when you divide or multiply by a negative number, which this problem doesn't require. So you end up with: X >= -3 or X >= -2. So I don't understand how you got X
Same here, been trying to figure this out for a while now!
i am also confuse at this same point, but i assume as one factor as positive and one as negative.lol
x cant be more than -3. -2.5, -2.6, -2,7 etc will break the >= 0.
There is nothing wrong with her working. She mentioned, that is a quadratic inequality, which means there is a slightly different method of solving that eqn.
In quadratic inequality, u find x like normal quadratic. And then with that x, u find the critical region. Remember b^2-2ac ? Thats how she ends up with that
As she said, check out her other video on that.
Sry bad english tho
it go me worried too, u are right
God bless you. You're amazing. Teachers like you deserve more than the world man.
You explained more to me in 12 short minutes than my professor does in hours of lectures. Thank you
this is 11th grade math why would it take hours?
... a subject that i have been confused by for weeks cleared up in just 12 minutes... i applaud you ma'am

Can you make a video of "how to find the range of any function"?
I mean u can inverse the function and then find the domain of that.. That will be the range of f(x) function...

Ok so finally after browsing through a lot if videos about this I finally understand ut with her explanation. Really a life saver
Honestly, you are really saving my non-mathematical bottom part. Thank you! :D
That was so slay of you, ate that up and left no crumbs. I actually understand and this helps with finding critical numbers in calc. Thank you!!!
I love how she can do math backwards and write backwards she really deserves a price, also your video helped me out a lot. Keep the good work going. (2k18 september anyone)

2k24 here!
5 years later @ 12:am, I'm searching for your videos. God bless you
She taught me how to find a domain not my teacher😂
You were trying to find your teacher? Tee-Hee!
yeah she gave the fundamental laws. That's what I was looking for
IM STILL LOST
I could listen to you talk about anything. This is great!
Could you make one that teaches how to figure out the range instead of the domain. Great video!
Out of all the videos I watched while stressing over getting into grade 11 this helped so much
To find the domain of the function: look at the A in the symbol f : A -> B
Great video, You've changed my view on learning entirely and I just know I'll be able to do better with my studies.
the fact that this video has been uploaded five years ago and we still ended up here, even tho we can already use all of those modern resources like AI for like everything. Nancy be saving my ass fr!!
I love your videos bc you have a lovely voice and explain things simply. Literally thank you I feel much better about my test tomorrow.

I've never seen that binding thing...in South Africa we use lil crocodile mouth things: (these) and then we don't use brackets, we just simply go, for example, -2

Teacher in the example of sqr(x^2 + 5x + 6) you make mistake in writing the domain it must be x greater than or equal to 0 thank you
no. She's right. It can't be equal to zero.
I just want to say this is the third time I have used your video for an exam Thank you so much this has helped me a lot ❤️

This part was killing me but wow she’s super talented thank you so much
Awesome!
Yours so organized I loved that! Organized lessons help me focus, so thank u
Thanks ❤️
Never have I understood and applied math so quickly. Thank you : )
What if you have a cubed root on the bottom? Like if it's 1/ x³+x
Set the radicand > 0 and solve. So x(x^2 + 1) > 0, critical value is only 0 since x^2 + 1 is always positive. So x > 0 is domain.
Love it. I understand it so clearly now. Tq for making this vid. Hope u r well and God bless u
julia, can you please help me understand why the sign changed at the one for square root only. Why is the answer x less than negative 3. please respond
What should I do if there's a quadratic on both numerator and denominator?
It is the same first example explained by Nancy. It Doesn't matter the numerator. The restriction is made by denominator because if it's equal to zero, the expression becomes undetermined. I hope to be clear enough.
How do you find the range of a rational function whose numerator and denominator are in quadratic form? Ulises Castro
Hi Jefferson. As I said before the funtion is restricted only by denominator. What is the range in a simple polynomial function?
wow I cant believe your video helped me even after 5years, keep up the good work
Hi my name is dea, I was wondering how do you find the domain for exponential functions?
is it all real numbers?
Wow i just really love the explanations❤ u are much better than my maths teacher....so talented....thanks so much,it helps a lot🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

just inverse the function (let function=y method) and find the domain of the inverse, because domain of f(x) inverse= range of f(x) and vice versa.
@@zacchary2961 could you maybe link a video or article explaining how to do that?
