- Using 2 vice grips and a twisting motion is the best way to cut / strip off electrical MC metal cable. My video will demonstrate how to do it in less than 30 seconds.

Don't like my technique using 2 vise-grip pliers? Or you need to cut hundreds of MC Cable? Buy the official / standard tool to cut MC Cable (ROTO SPLIT) here:

Thanks!
I do this with my hands 100x a day lol
you are electrician? do you do this and then snip it with your side cutters?
@@soldatheero yup. you bend it 180 degrees, unbend it to original position and twist it clockwise.
Same !
"Complete safe" -- except for the jagged end, that's too irregular to accept the required plastic bushing. No electrical inspector in the world would pass that.
The hard part (or the point) was how to untwist and cut without special tool like roto split! After it has been cut you can use metal snip or deburring tool to remove the sharp edge. Even using roto split you will still be left with some rough edges, thats why we use plastic bushing.
No inspector is going to take mc’s out of the connector to check how they are cut
I'd like the unwind method, but I would cut it clean with a snip. That way the plastic anti-cut bushing will seat properly inside the ends. Thanks
This is great! I have vice grips, and a few pieces of MC to strip. Saved me from buying the tool when doing “midnight” electrical and Home Depot is closed. THANK YOU!
Thank you for knowing and THANK YOU for sharing!!!!!! ❤
You just saved me about 5 hours of work. I am not an electrician, I do not own the perfect tools, but I do have pliers. Thanks Man!
Me2. Now I just need to find a youtube video on how to TERMINATE these MC cables. Working on a project where MC was used...EVERYWHERE so lots of boxes to re-terminate
Wow thats not how you doi it please do not do this
@@n-da-bunka2650 why would you want to terminate mc cable
If this would have taken you 5 hours please do not mess with electrical work
when terminating the MC cable be sure to use the plastic inserts...big..
Get a green lee wire cutter those old conductors are frail junk
So glad I looked this up & found this video. You just spared my husband a huge headache & helped him be safe. He is not an electrician and what he wanted to do looked questionable to me. Lol
He said he really appreciates your video so Thank You!!
Worked like a dream!!! Excellent!! Thank you very much!!!👍
Brilliant, just what I needed, thx much!
Glad it helped!
You saved me lot of time with that easy trick.
Thanks you.
Glad it work for you!
Gracias muchacho, you saved me from buying a tool 👍🏼
TY. 👍 Good information such as this is disappearing from youtube.
Two tools....and said maybe use a third one. U can do that by hand or one tool.
Wow! Your genius is in your simplicity. Thanks!
You saved me buying a tool that may never be used again, nice tip. I don't know why the haters are throwing shade towards you, forget about them. Thanks.
Thanks for your nice and encouraging comment. Much appreciated. 😃
Because he's a hack! Anyone that "usually uses a hacksaw" to strip MC/AC is a hack that isn't an electrician, just a shady handyman. Leave electrical to electricians before you get people killed.
Thanks for sharing this trick!
Too easy, awesome!! Thank you for the help!!
Forgot how, a year later came back to relearned it, thanks again!!
Great vid. This will help me out so much when working with Flex MC. I think I spent multiple hours the other night working with an armored fiber cable using this Flex MC.
Why not just get the correct tool it only takes 5 seconds. Just saYin
Some of us only cuts mc metal cable once every couple of years
@@DIYGEEKTEXAS I get it. I just don't like using tools that are hillbillie I prefer ideal and kline and knipex. I'm spoiled lol
Thank you brother!! Life saver
Thank God for RUclips! 🙌🏾
Where was this when I was a kid and had so many other miscellaneous questions 🤦🏾♂️
Thank you.
Get this man a beer
Brilliant! Thanks for the tip!
Thank you so much, I’m subscribing to you for this helpful video!
This is awesome, glad i found this video 😁👍
Just snap it with your hands and cut it with diagonal cutters way easier.
True but the idea was to use minimal tools available (2 pliers)
Cool trick I have never seen this technique ever
Good video, helpful. If doing alot of work, there is a tool for this . It takes less than 5 seconds.
a novice handy man will kink or splice that wire with a burr
Bro i hope this is a joke .....
@jesus navarro why do you think this is a joke?
Brilliant
Fantastic Information for those of us who can't buy "special tools" for that one or two times we have the need. Thanks!!!
Thanks
Can i use MC cable for outdoor application?
No. Mc cable are not outdoor rated
Takes 10sec with my Klein ac/bx cutter...
That's great but what if you don't have your Klein ac/bx cutter? Most people have a couple of pliers
@@DIYGEEKTEXAS if all you got is a needle nose and vice grips, i wouldn't suggest doing your own electrical work. If you are doing your own electrical work, i highly doubt you don't at least have a wire stripper, outlet tester, multimeter, cable cutter, ac/mc cutter (if you got an older home).
Awesome tip bro!
Wow. Thanks for posting this!
👍
This is called a hack method. This method could damage the conductors depending on the type of cable. It works fine (as illustrated) fir fixture wire but I would fail you as an inspector if I saw this method implemented in the field.
People pls don’t do this, it’s a horrible way of stripping back your MC. It can easily be done by hand with a simple bend and snap. Inspect the wire and make sure sharp edges don’t cut into the wire.
Honestly, you can do the same thing with your hands-just take MC and bend it sharply into a U shape and squeeze until it splits in half then fold it the other way, and then use a pair of dikes to cut. Don’t forget your red plastic anti-short bushing.
Ugh, 40 minutes with tin snips and THEN i go to youtube university. Thanks for sharing!
Great tip! Saves time, money, and effort. I've been using the hacksaw technique. Your technique is far superior. Thank you for the video.
I am not an electrician and have in the past cut the wires while removing the MC cable. Thanks for the easy solution.
i never thought of doing it that way,,far easier and less chance of cutting the wire using a hack saw thanks so much
Great hack buddy!
I was working with some 6 /4 today. Too big for my rotosplits. But I discovered that I could use my dykes to snip one rib and then twist it apart. For the most part, the cuts were pretty clean.
Search for do 2 things at once and here you are doing 3 and 4 things good lord
Perfect video. Quick and easy.
Stud.
Dude you are a rock star.. thanks...
Thank You !
Damn great tip bro!
Good idea but use snips instead of bending till it breaks
Great idea, yes using snips will result is cleaner cut (if you have snips with you) - THANKS
yeah, how do you know your'e not sraping the sheathing off of the wire?
@@ludwig6332 takes a little skill
Thank you
Obviously not an electrician!
NOOOOO
Why no?
you just saved me a world of headache. Thanks!
what about adding into one in an attic to add a light
Not all heroes wear capes, some have two vise grips
hahaha. Best comment I have ever received. Thank you!
Thanks. I love the bug noises
Perfect. Thanks!
I almost NEVER comment. This was so helpful. Thank you!!!! I immediately subscribed.
@Jacob Jones Thank you very much for your nice comment and subscription
Thanks for the info.
Great video!
Not a bad hack, will try it, thanks
Sweet good tip for demo
Awesome video for a rookie!
I use wat we call a can opener
No. Thank you!
Just get a can opener 😅
Bravo!!
Thanks Bro! I had 20 cables to cut, I am not an electrician and your video saved me from buying mc cable cutting tool
Glad I could help
Sweet thanks
Current cable maker here, just buy a roto-split and save yourself the time. A hacksaw also works good. They both don't make a mess.
Thanks
Or use a roto splitter?
SAVIOR!
Great video!!!
Thank sir!
Nice
Lol
Snapped!
Amazing - so easy, and the wires in the whip did not get damaged in the slightest! If I could upvote by 10 I would!
I only had one vice grip and some heavy-duty ratcheting pliers (Robo Grip) -- that worked just fine. After the spiral was opened up, I used the tin snips to cut the metal whip, to keep the wires protected. Pliers to flatten the end of the cut piece, and tin snips to trip the end to make a level end. The collar from the uncut end of the whip screwed right into the cut end and once tighted protected the wires once again!
@Paul Kern Thanks for your great comment.
@@DIYGEEKTEXAS Sure wish I had found your approach a few months ago, what a difference seeing these expert tips from a professional who does this all the time. I installed ceiling fan wiring from the attic into the existing light switch, and followed the traditional advice to remove the wires from the MC whip to trim it, then feed the 3 wires again through the MC, took some time b/c the MC is the same diameter for 2 or 3 wire whips.
Thanks again!!
That's flexible conduit. The cable is inside.
Thats right MC stands for metal cable. It is a flexible conduit (not water / weather proof), with electrical cable inside protected by metal cover from accidental cut and/or penetration.
@@DIYGEEKTEXAS Maybe "metal clad", since cable is already in the term "MC cable"?
Thanks for the tip/technique, about to put it use ;-)
WILL THAT WORK WITH 3/4"
yes it should work with 3/4" width MC cables as well, the design and structure of MC cables are the same between 1/2" and 3/4"
This is not right
why?
Brilliant! :-)
Thank you! Cheers!
Well done buddy. You solved my mystery.
Thanks 🙂
Thanks! Worked right away on my thick hot tub wire coating.
This is absolutely ridiculous. Just take some diagonal cutters and clip a rib, twist and remove. 3 seconds flat.
@Jean Gadoury Thanks for the tip. This video is for DIYers, not professional electricians. I am sure there are many better / faster ways to cut MC cables, however I am not sure how many people owns 'diagonal cutters', but I believe most people would have a couple of pliers or vise grips. Thanks for watching.
Thank you BOTH for the tips. I will do the diagonal cutter suggestion cause I have those.
Funny that you still need a pair of diagonal cutters (the only tool you ever needed to do this in the first place) to clean up the edge left on the metal sheathing.
The purpose of this video was to not use special cutting tools. Just 2 pliers that most people have and about 30 seconds. Most of us are not electricians
@@DIYGEEKTEXAS Exactly, no need for specialized tools for this process! I used tin snips to clean up the edge, worked great, just as good as the original factory cut MC end!
Thank you. My daughters attic has a live cable that I can't figure out where it runs to. Or why it's there. I plan on just cutting it short, putting it into a J box and capping off the wires. This is exactly what I needed to know.
50 bucks says it runs to your breaker panel.
How about just turn the breaker off?
@@pgood7266 This wire is spliced into wiring from one of the 1st floor bedrooms (somewhere.) I have now terminated it inside a J box. I did label the box as Live Wire and breaker number in case someone else someday wants to mess with it.

Wiggle it just a little bit...lol. Great job. Thanks man
Best technique and demonstration I've ever seen on RUclips. This is the best. Thank you.
