  • Quirky that #Basquiat who lived, worked and died in the 20th century was the highly coveted lot for @Christiesinc 21st century sale-perhaps it speaks to the heights of Basquiat's fame that have intensified in the last decade. That said, kids, remember your history: Basquiat was famous during his lifetime.
But there are still untested aspects of his market, according to @Christieinc specialist, @anamcelis whom we got the scoop on the triptych "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Derelict," 1983, which came to the block with an estimate of $30 million-and largely considered to be his finest example of his wood constructions (though don't sleep on @nahmadcontemporary's exhibition, "Art and Objecthood," where some sick examples are on view). But as Cellis says, "canvas is more traditional," and so for these aspects of Jean-Michel's practice may not reach the skyrocketing levels that his 1982/1983 oil-on-canvases' are known to fetch at auction.
"Portrait of the Artist as a Young Derelict," did not sell and was withdrawn from the auction.
