Cove light preference by Deakins, not only is it about making light feel natural but it's the best approach if the production is on a tight budget. You can even use simple small tweenies to get same effect. Great presentation by the way.

No. He's not. Cove lighting is for narrative films, 3-point lighting is for interviews. They are different tools.
Was a good and depth explanation, but sometimes Sir Roger means that not to be a slave of 3point or any other lighting paradigm! Not about main, fill, kicker etc but the situations and story.
I think that's really the key. I make sure to talk about this in my Final Verdict (around 11:40). The beauty of Deakins is that he is not dogmatic or reliant on any method. He is motivated by the story, which is why his work is so great. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!

I wonder how cove lighting is when lit from behind? Looking at how much extra headroom your fixtures had, and muslin is about a 2-stop loss (like magic cloth which I use), I wondered if you could get the same look? Good demostration!

For convinience of speed and space I tend to have a big softbox as key light, and a harder source on the side of the subject. using some fabric to cut the harsness of the LED. Bit of both world and easier to set up. Cove Light gives more "space" to move for your actors.
