@@seigeengine I do get what you mean, but industries have taken it on themselves to create the concept of 'the consumer' and sell it back to us. And this industry in particular has increasingly undermined our real values and instead exploited the worst parts of ourselves by telling us that's who we really are. It's not that we aren't sexual beings, we are- but we shouldn't accept their clearly defined narratives or packaging to depict who we are. I also don't think we should underestimate the power of these industries, their advertising, how they package their products, and how over time these things can actually start to mould us and our ideas of ourselves. Idk, I think it's worth thinking about discussing!
Sure, there's the whole bidirectional flow of cultural influence between consumer and media thing, and of course porn distorts our values, but I think it's too much to pretend that America isn't racist, and that these things aren't absolutely typical outgrowths of pre-existing racist mindsets.
And I don't really ascribe to any general anti-porn sentiments. I've been watching porn from my first opportunity, and almost all the porn I've ever consumed is a lot more palatable to the moral busybodies than the kinds of fantasies little ten year old me was having when he discovered sexual desire.
@@seigeengine Racism is a whole topic in itself, but I was more talking about the way this industry chooses to respond to existing racial values/ beliefs. So I think in this case the porn industry is choosing a side, which only further entrenches these types of beliefs.
I do think it is good to be able to separate the idea that people are judging individuals for watching porn and the idea that we should be questioning what we, as identifying 'consumers' consume. Questioning everything doesn't come from an 'anti porn sentiment', it is having the responsibility to try and see things from a more detached and generally critical view. I think that's kind of healthy :)
That's the trouble though. What happens if they try to fight the racism of the consumer and it goes poorly? They go out of business.
Sure, but I think that's more the job of parents and educators to teach children to reason and be skeptical than, you know, porn studios. On the plus side, porn taught me that standardized units of measure are more a mild suggestion, and women love nothing more than having trauma inflicted on their cervixes.
I don't know why I'm watching this or why it was in my recommended section, but I still found it very interesting.
