Great sound! I still have a picture somewhere of me and a 1977 Strat I owned back then. Sunburst finish, black pick guard and pickups, rosewood fingerboard that actually had the “skunk stripe” on the back of the neck. Of course, it also had the larger headstock. THAT is what makes an older Strat to me!
I have a 76, which sounds just like this! They were really hit and miss. Some dogs out there. The (now deprecated) 'Classic' series from Fender Mexico were turning out very faithful reproductions from 1999 to, I believe, last year. I have a 99, first run, and its essentially identical to my 76 with only two tells: they put vintage pressed steel saddles on them and the bullet nut is noticeably shorter. Also ash body, good weight too at 9.4lbs. My 76 is 9.8lbs. The best of the bunch is the 2008, which has the same appointments but noticeably nicer pickups and a slightly fatter and rounded neck profile than the 99 or the 76. The 99 is clearly modelled on the 70's necks, same shoulder. The re-issues can be had for between 3 and 500 in the UK. They seem to be holding their value well and are, for Mexico, top quality. Well recommend if you can find one. Do change the trem springs for Raw Vintage ones if you do. The only mod I would make tbh ..
I bought a 1977 Stratocaster In 1977 just like that . The color is blonde. Only the the blonde color Stratocasters got ash bodies around that time. Iv sold in the mid ‘80’s but I am looking for one now.
Hi Phil That was a fantastic version of the final solo from Comfortably Numb and if I shut my eyes I would have thought that I was listening to the great Mr Gilmour. It is one my favorite guitar solo's of all time. I just wish that I could play it. I was never a fan of the 70's strat but your looks absolutely great and sounds even better. Looking forward to hearing it some more.
3.33 : "you can see the grain through the body" . It has a three bolt neck , many regard this undesirable . The neck can move sideways . In particular when the cavity for the neck is slightly too big , which happens . A four bolt neck does not have that problem , regardless the cavity . The three bolt neck was used all through the seventies ( except the '79 anniversary ) . Fender never did it again....
I get why 70s Strats got a bad rep. They can be heavy, the neck pocket is normally too big. But the ones that survive today have survived for a reason. They play and sound great.
Great vid again Phil....love the Floyd version. Out of interest, when you came across this 79 strat were you fully conversant with the specifics of that model/date or do you rely on the honesty & knowledge of a reputable dealer? The reason I ask is that i'd love to buy a vintage guitar but I'm paranoid about parting with good money and ending up with a lemon....if you know what I mean.
Roger Moore Hi, I’m fairly confident in the ‘70’s era Fenders as I’ve had a few before but I did buy it from a very reputable shop where I know the owners and staff very well so I had no doubts at all on the authenticity. (Absolute Music in Bournemouth). Unless I felt 100% confident though, I wouldn’t buy a vintage guitar private. I’d have to know everything there was about that particular instrument. Research everything you can on the guitar if you see something you like.
Fantastic guitar my friend . ...I must ask , I was looking at the new Fender american original 70s teles and I was wondering your thoughts on the 3 bolt necks . Are they sturdy and true . ( being that has one )..thanks .
Jeff Hebert Thanks very much. My main guitar for the last 34 years has been a Japanese 70’s Reissue Strat with a 3 bolt neck and I’ve had no issues whatsoever. Hope that helps.
Congratulations on the skill. Great sound, Defined and full-bodied when needed. Does it fit the original stock pick-ups? I am looking for pickups to mount on classic vibe 50 that have a warm and rich mid / low sound. The sound that interests me is GILMOUR-CLAPTON - KNOFLER. Which ones do you recommend to hear? Maybe if you still find the ones mounted on your 1979 STRATO they could be fine? Thank you.
Steve, I used to own a ‘79 strat (white with black plastics) and from what I remember the fretboard was quite narrow and in general yes it was skinny. 👍
One question Phil , do you learn all your solo's by ear or do you cheat a little and watch a utube lesson OR read tabs ? Great playing as per usual 👍🎸😎
Great guitar, I own one as well. Looks like the neck in yours isn’t original: the original necks didn’t have the bullet truss rod like yours, but yours looks like a mid 70s neck.
You lucky son of a you know what! I only have a 40 year old Japanese Squier CBS style Strat copy😢😢.
love that sound. total 70s country vibes here
wow, outstanding playing!! Hope to add a '79 soon enough to my arsenal
Love the 79s. I really need a anniversary model.

Wow... just wow. Nice one Phil

pretty damn good take on Gilmour's epic solo.
Ernest Schultz Thank you very much 👍
Absolutely beautiful

Jeff Hebert
All safe over here thank you.
Stay safe yourself.
I own one 1979... The Strats from the 70s are the only ones that sound different from the rest.
Congratulations on the skill.

Looks like skinny neck on these 70s strats. or is there Just an Illusion because headstocks bigger ?

Damn incredible playing and tone. What amp?
Thank you so much.
It’s a Line6 Helix.
Do u use the reissue when u gig
Yes, it’s my main guitar.
One question Phil , do you learn all your solo's by ear or do you cheat a little and watch a utube lesson OR read tabs ? Great playing as per usual 👍🎸😎
9 times out of 10 it’s by ear but I have been known to take a sneaky look at the old RUclips!! 😉
😃

The neck is original.
It’s a 70’s strat, they had the bullet
I had the Anniversary model. Not my favorite guitar.
Lovely...but it seems not to be original Fender . Look at "stratocaster" on headstock ...seems flat .
It is original.
