In this bedroom renovation video, I show how to make a DIY modern platform bed with built-in surround cabinets, LED lighting, and a live edge slab headboard. The platform bed and custom built-in cabinets and floating nightstands / side tables are made from 10 sheets of maple plywood, and I added a live edge slab headboard. I used LED strips and acrylic diffusers to create overhead reading lights that are controlled by touch panel on the side of the bed. This modern platform bed, along with the built-in cabinets and floating nightstands, turned out to be a huge project, but the woodworking techniques used are all fairly basic. This is my dream bed setup, and I hope you all can learn a few things from the process and mistakes I had to work through along the way.

I just had to take a moment to come back to this video. This video kickstarted everything for me! Something about this design lit off a little spark in my head, and I still remember staying up far later than I should have designing my own take on this setup. I never actually built it, but the problem solving and design process really unlocked a whole new way of thinking for me.
I was working an awful, low-paying job, living in a tiny 400 sq. ft. studio apartment in a rough part of town. This video made me save up and buy my first power tools since I had been homeless four years prior. Nothing fancy, just a little cordless Ryobi circular saw and an impact driver and drill, with some cheap bits. I still have them and use them 5+ years later!
I'm now comfortably situated into my own home, and while renovations are happening slowly, they're happening, chipping away at projects here and there every weekend! I frequently find myself outside my comfort zone in terms of design and execution, and while it can be frustrating, it's also incredibly rewarding as I learn and develop new skills.
So, I just wanted to say, THANK YOU! You opened an avenue of my life that I never even knew was there. With this one video, you completely changed the course of my life, starting me down a path of developing skills that led to being in a place I never even imagined I could be.
Thank you for sharing this facet of your life. It means more to me than you could ever know!
I prefer when these videos talk mistakes and lessons learned. Too many videos depict an impossibly perfect workflow start to finish 👌
Thanks! We all make mistakes, so best to share and learn together, I think.
@@modustrial Yep, and like you mentioned; If it saves one person from making that same mistake, it's totally worth it!
Agree
Who else has been recently so interested in room or whatever renovations...
IITisiannaII :D loll I feel u bruh
I have always loved these videos/shows. But lately it's like I have a whole lot of home improvement motivation....
So that you can spend money on overpriced stuff you don’t actually need? Free advice, don’t.
Me
I am a product designer, in love with furniture design, and I'm so impressed! the piece of wood left me speechless!
Thank you Monica! That is a huge compliment!
I've only watched 1min 20secs of this an i keep repeating "Well done!" out loud! Think I've said it 50 times already. And I cant stop! This is absolutely beautiful man! ...Well done!!! An the fact that you took your dream into your own hands is simply awesome man! Not many people do that for themselves or others. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks much for the kind words!
Hey Mr. Clifford I am very glad you decided to post this even through you said you had mistakes and struggles because seeing how you worked through them and everything turned out perfect is a big line on the learning curve for us viewers so thank you.
Thanks Jonas!
This loft bed set up is the dream I didn’t know I needed to achieve. Looks great. Definitely goals.
Thanks much for the kind words!

Just coming back to watch the video that got me following your journey. Grateful that you share your victories and mistakes. Also grateful that you got through the health crisis and are still with us. Love you man.
Your wall is the reason we are going to put plywood behind our dry wall.
That way we can hang annything annywhere and the wall's will be straight.😁
Glad to see i'm not nuts for wanting to do this and spending those few buks more in the renovation of our home 😁
Thanks for this vid
OSB my man. will probably cost you less and will hold almost anything if sized correctly. Cheers
Since you can't continue the new videos, I figured it was time to watch an older one to see where you came from to where you are at now. Glad I did.
You say for others to learn from my mistake right in the beginning and only few seconds in the video we see you cutting plywood without glasses 😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍. Very learning video 😂😂 seriously it’s absolutely great Good job
Nice supervisor. Everyone needs that kind of help. Love that black stain you used. Beautiful bed and shelving. The live edge is fabulous. You are one talented guy. Thanks for sharing.
Man I've just realized that I can do all this as well and someday I wont have to settle for junk one size fits all furniture... you've inspired me to work towards doing builds like this for my own home. Thank you!
Awesome! Inspiration is the goal :)
I'm a 76 year old woman who's never going to make anything in this video but it was fascinating watching how you did it. Then why did I watch it? Because the finished bedroom was sooo beautiful. You have a wonderful design esthetic. I impressed beyond belief. Congratulations on the magnificent bedroom. 👷🏻♂️ 👷🏻♂️ 👷🏻♂️
Believe it or not the best thing I got from this video is the fact it took 7 months. That's gonna help me keep the wife quiet when I'm not finishing things in the time an HGTV episode is done. That looks great. I could have "done alot" when I was single with a spot like that. ;)
Thanks! And glad I could help, even if in an unintended way :)
HAHA no doubt my man...the hour long diy home improvement shows def makes us look bad at times and they make it look WAAAAY easier than it truly is.
Yeah, HGTV makes it looks way easier, not to mention way less expensive, than it actually is
@@modustrial Yep. My new saying is "Sheetrock is cheap except when you have to buy 40 sheets of it"
Cheap, and LIGHTWEIGHT. Definitely would have been easier to remove the drywall and redo it, than deal with the plywood wall panels. Live and learn....
This is soo old. I remember being at your loft that night when you were making the headboard. It looks a lot better in person folks. Mad nice job. 2020
Ha, the good ol' days...
using the corner clamp to snug up the two cabinets was easily the most clever thing you didn't talk about. I'm gonna remember that one!!
Thanks! Yeah , there were so many things I wanted to fit in, but I figured 30 minutes was long enough! :)
This guy is just so obscenely talented, it's almost discouraging, if it wasn't so inspiring.
Congrats dude! That's a massive undertaking especially in a basement shop. It looks great, and I love the inset plexi for the LED strips. That maple slab's not bad either.
Thanks Michael! Not quite your level of craftsmenship, but I'm pretty happy with the results of my "hackmenship" :) The shaper was great for inlaid LEDs, made it super easy to get a precise fit.
💖💖💖💖💖 you've designed & built a masculine bed set, LOVE IT ! 👍🏻👍🏻
this is absolutely dope, I'm going to build something like this for my new house... thanks man! That loft is awesome
Thanks! Definitely share pics with me if you build something similar. Just tag me on Instagram or email me.
Wow! I guess if YT is suggesting one this old, I must have seen nearly all your stuff. 💜
Damn that bedroom is gonna get you LAID, son!

Just can't pipe her at the edge of the bed. Imagine hitting your knee on that sharp edge.
Just as long as the dude he is trying to bang doesnt see the video and see how much he sucks at wood working!

I'm glad he showed the challenges. That's maybe the most valuable part.
I understood 12 words in total but I watched the whole thing because it's entertaining as hell
Thanks Brandon!
Thank You for leaving all the issues you ran into in the video!!!
It was like a whole different language while you were explaining the steps because I know literally none of the terms you used but this project is beautiful! Great job.
Thanks Diona! It's not too hard, you'll pick it up if you keep watching RUclips (literally where I learned everything I know about making too :) )
Pretty much... Never had any formal training
i make mistakes like the pocketholes all the time, its awesome to see how you just rolled with the blows and got there in the end, great job, and good instrumental beats !!
Thanks much!
What an epic project, my friend! Your loft is the coolest, and the bedroom remod raises the bar. Obviously, the slab headboard is my favorite!

thanks!
Have never commented on a video before.. new subscriber and also want to say I love your honesty! Thanks and keep up the good work!
Thanks Dustin! I'll do my best to keep 'em coming!
I loved your discussions through changes of plans and mistakes. Beautiful finished project and good to see a real process!!
Ida gone straight to ikea after the pocket holes lol
This man needs a Kreg Foreman and a Festool Conturo. Nice work, sir!
It looks great, but I have a concern. I'm not sure I would trust nail gun nails to hold that slab to the french cleats. I can't tell how heavy the slab is, but screws are surely the safer option. I wouldn't want something as heavy as that falling on my head in the middle of the night.
Armchair quarterback over here! Go use all that knowledge and build a superior version and let is know how it goes...
@@mikevcampbell as if using screws is some next-level technique that only italian artisans bred from da vanci himself could use... and he's right.
Agreed screws are the absolute safest way to go...however, it's a thin slab and the direction of force perpendicular to the nails means that the force on the nails, in the direction pulling them out of the wood, is minimal....there are a lot in there, and the chances of them all failing at once with no previous warning sign is next to none. That said, I probably will go back with a few screws at some point, because it is relatively easy to do.
Unless he also added glue, in which case it's fine.
Wood on wood, always add glue!
Wow, subbed after hearing you list off what was done to create such a unique addition to the bedroom.
Мне нравится этот проект! Очень круто смотрится!
man!!!! that's the most awesome router i have seen in my life.....i want one!!!!
I can only imagine how long the edit took on this. Outstanding work! Thank you for sharing it.
Thanks Rick! The fear of the editing process was definitely one of the reasons it took me 7 months to finish off the project 😃
shimmed french cleats are one option, but using some wood spacers behind the ply would be easier, and allow for "some" self leveling. Pocket holes receive lots of crap for a reason. Making a dovetail jig may takes a bit of time, but once done, it's super easy and quick to use in the long run, and the results won't squeak..ever! Just in case anyone wants to build something similar.
Wow, I really enjoyed this build so much. I wish I could’ve been there to help
I love this bed. The color is just right. I love black. Great job. You do learn from your mistakes , therefore you know what to do on the next project.
Whenever this dude gets into making things wins it like diy beds one, river table won, tv shelf won very good woodworker
Thanks Nola!
Lots to learn from this especially when you new to wood work. The fact that this took 7 months at least allows us newbies go gage how long a big project could typically take when working alone. Really appreciate the work put in here and the lessons learned. Well done, it looks awesome
Thank you!
Would love to do something like this, my choices of materials (and thus design) would be a bit different. Steel, brushed aluminum, glass, and carbon fiber. I'm absolute arse at woodworking, but metal and I get along well enough and I'm learning to lay carbon...and I just like glass. Of course, if I were to take the plunge, mine would cost a LOT more than yours...aaannnd take longer.
Maybe not...but your video is certainly inspirational!
Thanks! And using those materials would certainly look very cool!
Wooooooooow!!! This video is a great example on how you may encounter problems with projects but you always have to find a way around them. Great job, i'll take some ideas from this
Thanks! I always like to share the mishaps and hardships in hopes others can learn from me and avoid them!
Sweet loft Mike! That seemed like a huge undertaking but it was well worth it in the end. I like the black and the warm lighting, def a sleek bachelor pad 👍🏻
Thanks man! It was a ton of work but I'm happy with the result
Badass dude. I just watched the hidden TV video and had to watch how you did the bed. I'm a carpenter so of course I really like your ideas and chraftmenship. Plus being a city boy myself, I just love how you did everything man. I'm jealous lol. Thanks for the tips and ideas. Keep up the great work buddy.
Thank you Frankie! Very kind words! :)
Hey no problem man. I see you're a perfectionist. Takes one to know one lol. You do great work buddy
7 months, you must have a busy day job lol. Imagine remodeling a kitchen 😂
staining trick I learned: use a rag damp with warm water and wipe the wood down you're planning on staining before you start staining. It opens the wood up for stain and helps spread it evenly.
Wow. Love all of your projects, but this one is my favorite to date! Thank you so much for including your lessons learned, it's always helpful to learn from our mistakes, but even better to learn from someone else's ;-)
Thanks Stephanie! That's my goal... Fall on my face so others don't have to :)
the supervisor is the best part of this video!!
You sir have gotten my attention!!
Thanks!
Hi from Aotearoa (New Zealand), wow, that is amazeballs!!!! I now have an awesome idea for my room, thank you so much. By the way, I think mistakes are helpful, as long as we don't keep making the same mistakes then we will learn. I hope people will be a bit more kinder in their choice of words towards you because i think you do an awesome job. Any hu, keep up your great work because I'll look forward to seeing more, 🍻
Me: I wanna do my own dream bed!! I can do this!!!
Also Me after watching this video: Did you see the discounts on IKEA lately? And the beds are really not that bad...
._.
Thanks for showing the mistakes. We often learn more from them than the successes
Killer build! Love the live edge and lighting!
Thanks Adam!
A marbled epoxy would of looked epic on that wood piece
That would be cool!
RESPECT TO SHARING THE SKILLS!
The fact that it took you months to finish This amazing work of yours, it’ll take me years to build it 😂
Really gratifying to see how all our work turned out. Definitely worth a weekend of hard labor!
Thanks for pitching in to help Mom!
High quality edge banding? That's not a thing lol. I am impressed with what you did though, good work man.
Thanks much! It's all relative ;)
You had my like, the second you said you published to showcase your mistakes. Epic.
Class instruction! I'm speechless greetings MrHandwerk :)

Hi Mike, like I said, the bedroom looks really great. The video has also become very good and vivid again! Respect and please more of it! Best regards to the states Frank
Thanks much Frank!
3:20 hmmmmm I know that feeling.... i have no word to described it :(
Hi Mike,
Just a tip to enhance this video and others. When you add the time stamps to description, add the time at the beginning of the line without brackets. Recently RUclips created a feature that takes the timestamps and the subsequent sentence and creates labelled sections along the play bar, making it EVEN easier to find the part of the video that you want.
Loft tour NOW
Getting close to being ready! Still have to tackle the guest bedroom and roof deck ;)
This has to be the most beautiful bed I have ever seen. I only wish I was as talented as you. The slab blew me away.
30:30 looks like he's Photoshopped there lol
Yeah like he’s standing in front of a picture and green screened in 😂
I agree fam. It's too perfect.
Thumbs up for the supervisor ;)
🐈🐾😸
I can make this, except I dont have a million dollar loft to put my bed in. I guess my hammock will have to suffice another frigid night.
That's what I call BAD ASS!!!
Thanks Jae!
Dude this came out awesome! Your best build to date. I'm a sucker for black furniture, especially when you can still see the grain, it screams modern but natural still. BTW speaking of your community design stuff. I sent you an email about about a week or so back about a design, I could really use the help! You're a genius with this kinda stuff and I love your style so yeah!
Thanks man! Sorry for the slow response - just emailed you back.
@@modustrial dude no worries! You're a busy man haha! With RUclips you got two jobs. Plus the email of the build has no time frame!
I appreciate the reminder tho ...I think the desk will be cool!
Классно! Нравится смотреть зарубежные ролики и изучать технический английский. А также перенимать опыт.
Спасибо! Я рад, что вам понравилось видео!
really awesome man - was excited to see this video...also I see what you did with those chapters at the beginning...
Thanks! Yeah, hopefully the TOC will make it easy to watch in multiple sittings
The bed is indeed dreamy. Every wood cut and detail is a work of art itself.
@leif price Thanks Leif!
making mistakes its part of learning, thank you for this video...your work its awesome!!!!
Looks good, but it hurts my legs just by looking at it.
Looks good from a distance......
80% of the people clicked this video because of that under bed light
General Stains are dope. Tip, use the water based dye before applying the gel stain. Gel stain is just top coat, so areas that get knicked alot will chip away the stain. The dye penetrates the wood fibers, it's like a primer/base coat.
Good to know! I have had a couple chips already.
smh were is the pace for the kids to hide from a cereal killer under the bed
I could really murder a bowl of cornflakes right now, lol.
@@devilsknight ;-D LOL
AMGx_Gunnah Don’t have kids?.... Solves the issue 😂
A trick for the drawer faces going forward. Pre-drill the holes for the hardware in just the face, close the drawer, set the face in place, shim it as desired(playing cards work absurdly well, but tapered softwood shims will get the job done, if a bit unwieldy. Use a pair of screws through the hardware mounting holes to fasten the face temporarily, pull the drawer out, fasten from the inside, then remove the screws from the face, drill through the inner and install the hardware.
Great tip!
That bed sheet is killing me...
Lol, I did! I draw the line at ironing it though :)
I wish I could learn carpentry from you. It's an art...and the creativity.
Simply wow...bedroom is assum... and the supervisor was good in his inspection 🤗
Thank you! 😺
Man you have been blessed with some serious patience. I would have torched every single cut that I made with the wrong depth pocket hole and started over. LOL
Thanks! Patience is not my strong point, definitely tossed a few clamps when the camera wasn't rolling 🤣
Wow !!!!! I’m speechless !!!! I salute you
Thank you!
Damnnnnn. This bed is siiiiiiiiiick!
Thank you! 😎
So nice I love the final results
imo bed frame will look and feel better (sharp edges) if you cover it with thin layer of foam and fabric....Great job!
One tip I would add is to drill the holes for the handle hardware in the drawer fronts first, use these holes to attach the drawer faces to the box after you have aligned them perfectly -pull the drawers out -attach from the rear- take screws out of the drawer faces then drill the holes you need in the drawer box and install the handles
Yeah that's what bed help's you do
Best thing about vid of is that you admit that you messed up
Most YTers act as if They never mess up all their cut and measurements are perfect
Thanks for being transparent
Great vid
Thanks! I always try to share my mistakes so others can learn from them 😀
Sweet bed man. Well done!
I think we had the same "dream" lol. This is absolutely gorgeous! Black on wood with the grain showing is simply sexy if you ask me. That slab is just jaw dropping. The leds are a plus, the "floating" platform bed AND floating night stands?!! Bellissimo!! Everything I've literally asked my hubby I want for THE bed lol. Thank you for this video & uploading it. Something we can now look forward to.... lots of pocket holes lol
Thanks Janie! You have great taste ;)
Nice work, just wanted to let you know I subscribed mainly because of your honesty about your mistakes or relaying problems encountered and your recommended solutions. It shows me you really want to teach people the best way to make amazing things. It also makes me comfortable visiting and using your sponsors. Thanks
Thank you for the kind words Lucas! Glad to have you here!
I found that if you use a sharpie to trace a line around the bit; on the drill side; around the collet, once the depth is set, that way you can make a quick visual check to see if the collet has loosened and moved up...(the collet will cover the line you made around the bit if it moves)
Thanks, great tip!
Wow, what an EXCELLENT aesthetic!
This is an AMAZING project. Well done!!!
Thank you!
