  • Presented by Forest Tennant, MD, MPH, DrPH. Learn about the often-misunderstood diagnosis of adhesive arachnoiditis. We’ll discuss this complex neuroinflammatory disease of the spinal canal covering (arachnoid) and the lumbar spinal cord nerve roots (cauda equina). In other words, two different body parts abnormally “glue” together by adhesions. Pulsed Electromagnetic Energy (PEMF) will be presented as a treatment option, including results of a randomized, controlled trial for patients in pain after lumbar surgery. Dr. Tennant is an internist and addictionologist who has spent his medical career researching and treating intractable pain. He managed the Veract Intractable Pain Clinics in West Covina, California, from 1975 (originally focused on cancer pain and post-polio disease) to 2018. Dr. Tennant served as the editor-in-chief of Practical Pain Management from 2007 through 2017 and continues to hold an Emeritus honor with the journal. Today, he leads the Tennant Foundation and its Arachnoiditis Research and Education Project. Dr. Tennant is a member of the American Academy of Pain Medicine, the Academy of Integrative Pain Management, the American Pain Society, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine. He has authored over 300 scientific articles and books. He formerly served as a Medical Officer in the US Army and US Public Health Service, and was a consultant to the FDA, National Institute on Drug Abuse, and Drug Enforcement Administration, as well as to the LA Dodgers, National Football League, and NASCAR.

Yep. This is what I have it is unlivable. I saw Forest Tennant and he diagnosed me in about 15 minutes by asking a few simple questions and this is exactly what I have. Those symptoms are absolutely spot-on. Urinary problems unable to move your bowels. Sorry. Blurry vision and imbalance. leads to pain like cancer end stage cancer but you dont die. You wish you would. Thank you Doctor tenant for leading the charge. He was so important to this hard-to-treat condition yet the feds shut him down and now we're back. The only problem with this is the inability of doctors to listen and actually learn from him. They just thought he was a kook. No way

This video was a godsend to me.
As long time suffer from this condition. It has given me great talking points to bring up at my appointments. I specifically like the point you made about thinking some of your patience were nuts.
I got mad at my primary care physician for even suggesting it was psychosomatic.
So thanks again for this valuable information. And for anyone that's
suffering from any form of this and is just a layman like me with barely a high school education that's done nothing but work hard all their life it's frustrating hang in there and please find the right team of care givers. Don't let them treat you like your crazy.
When you're hurting that bad sometimes it's hard to be nice.
Most physicians are trained to treat hostile people as mental and will red flag you in a minute.
    Don't give up.

This presentation was excellent. I am a nurse and also have developed Adhesive Arachnoiditis. The symptoms are exactly what I am experiencing. I found the steroid packs and Toradol (before I knew I had AA) helped immensely. I am more dependent on opioids ( try to limit myself to 2-3 tabs during most severe acute inflammatory times). I listened to a previous lecture of yours and I am in the process of looking for an expert in Arachnoiditis. That has been a bit hard to locate. I finally found a neuro spine center with providers that are experienced. I worry about using opioids, at the same time I can’t function without them. There is a lot of stigma on medications. My primary doesn’t know anything about this disease. I plan to share your videos. 😊

I just got up one morning about 25 years ago and couldn’t get down hallway to restroom. I thought I was just getting some kind of weird flu bug. I only wish that was case.
About 6 months later I was in a urgent care with weakness and what felt like fish biting or eating at my legs constantly 24 seven as the weakness increased plus if I would let the pain get out of control my symptoms would worsen find a doctor to believe that these days . Fortunately this all started in the early 80s the only fortunate thing about this I guess if you want to call it that.
    Well before
    WAR AGAINST OPIATES
Now the same doctors that were more than willing to help in part with prescribing pain medicine. Didn’t think the pain was real , bad, or I could exercise and that would make it all better. Here 25 years later just sitting and waiting for enough courage to stand up because then I’ll have to walk into my bedroom to try to get into bed to sleep I haven’t slept a night through since this started I have gone night’s where I can’t sleep at all . I been treated for years with a lot of medication opiates worked best and well for a while then I would have to up the dosage. And that’s when you could get them. Now well I won’t get into that!!!!!!!!!!
I would tell myself there is no way pain could be so bad it can and will stop you from doing just about anything you wanted , enjoyed had to get done, holidays ,family functions forget about going at least for me.
I think U get the idea. Usually today my days are spent sitting ,sitting thinking about standing up, but deciding on waiting for a while walking to the kitchen to get a drink of water and then paying the price for making that decision! Wanting to go check mail excited about the order I had made but I I’m afraid I’ll fall get stuck and wouldn’t be able to get up. Sorry I didn’t mean to write a book. But hopefully someone will read this and I won’t feel so alone and lost.

Dr. Luchtmann in Zwickau operiert Tarlovzysten.

I had an epidural whilst being induced in 2013 which was placed wrong the first time, they re-did the epidural and my pain relief was one sided... since then I've had back pain that's slowly gotten worse. I also have balance issues, cant stand sunlight anymore as it hurts and makes me tired, my bones click and ache...GP cant find any reason. at this point I just feel like an old worn out dog that can barely move and needs to be put to sleep 😒

    DALLAS NORTH FORTY?
I think we need to pull a Matthew McConaughey. That's the only way for satisfaction.🥺🥺🥺 I know I'm a dreamer but not the only one.🎶🎵 IMO! NOONE ELSE.

Nerves in the spinal cord that bundled up and stuck together causing the spinal fluid to not send signals, nutrients to the brain which causes life long, severe, debilitating inflammation. This disease is caused by our sedentary lifestyles, degenerative disk disease, pokes in the spine, spine surgery and a certain CT scan that requires injections of non-soluble dyes in the spine. If you get this disease it will be so bad you can’t work. The disease is so bad, it will severely affect your health, income and it will cause early death. This is not a mild disease. It is rearing it’s ugly head again as surgeons preform more unnecessary spine surgeries on our aging population. It’s a unrecognized disease due to the fact many in the medical field are not aware such disease exist. However, the disease has been around since the 1800’s. The purpose of this video is awareness, and getting all in the medical field to recognize such disease exist so they can make the diagnosis and help patients cope with the disease.

Oral morphine with Gabapentin has been my only relief. Dr. Aldrete has shown that implants (pain pumps, et.al.) creates more scarring over time, making the advanced stages of AA worse.
I've been diagnosed as end-stage AA after half a decade of being poked with needles, physical therapy, electrodes, pain management therapy, along with experimental medications, my AA advanced to where it is today. 14 years ago I had a serious injury (broken back and neck) where the fractures in my vertebra were not discovered until over a year later (at the time, the bone fragments fused in situ.
My AA was not caused by injections or dyes, but direct trauma from undiagnosed broken vertebra. The workers comp doctors treated me as if I had myofascial strain/pain, so a lot of rigorous therapy and massage and even chiropractic manipulation was done to me. The AA level I am at is, according to two specialists including Dr. Aldrete, is at its worst stage.
Other than stem cell therapy, I've been through the wringer when it comes to experimenting on me. I was their Guinea Pig until Dr. Aldrete's diagnosis - based on my history and my many MRIs and a CAT scan.
I appreciate Dr. Tennant for his continued exploration of different treatments, but I have found I can live the best life I can with the use of opioid medication (specifically oral morphine and Gabapentin). Nothing else has kept me stable and I have not had to change my dosage for 12 years.
I do not appreciate doctors/researchers who say opiates are the wrong medication to prescribe. Yes, there is an epidemic of opioid-related overdoses, illicit trade, etc., but for me, I take only what is prescribed and it works.
These doctors who push the opioid crisis as a reason to stop prescribing medication such as morphine has caused me great suffering - literal suffering - for pharmacies are now halting the filling of my prescriptions due to Presidential orders to "fight the opioid crisis".
I cannot afford (emotionally and physically) to stop what works for me today just to go through another series of experimental medications/therapies JUST to get me off morphine. I've been tortured enough with experimental medications - experimental meaning "experimented on me to see if it works for me" - For years I suffered through these non-opiate experiments/therapies, and I am DONE being tortured with things that don't work as well and as effective as morphine and Gabapentin.
For patients who are just reaching the beginning stages of this disease, these therapies and medications Dr Tennant want to try may be the solution to this problem... but I've been through the years upon years of experimenting to find what works and have had nothing but suffering on top of the suffering AA causes. I am stable with my current medications, but this ever-increasing war on opiates is stripping my ability to get the medication that works for me.
What is the saying? "Adhesive Arachnoiditis has the pain of terminal stage four cancer, but without the relief of death"... and the one I have heard cited over and over, "Improperly treated Adhesive Arachnoiditis has a 100% chance of suicide".
This war on opiates will be the death of me. I will be suffering through the torture of trying some new therapy until I cannot take it anymore should this war on the medication I require is continued to be stripped from my medication regimen.
Today I got a phone call from my pharmacy. They told me that I am being prescribed the same level of morphine with no attempts to lower the dosage, therefore they will no longer fill my prescription".
Again, I have been on the same dose of morphine for a decade with no increase necessary and it is helping me keep stable. Now I am told that due to the government crackdown on opiates, my prescriptions will no longer be filled - this is the fourth pharmacy who has blocked the filling of my prescriptions over that decade. Thee are no other pharmacies for me to go to.
It sounds as if the government of the country I honorably served in the Army is now wanting me to die just because criminals and irresponsible people are abusing the medication I need to survive. I suppose I am just a statistic now, not a person who requires these medications to survive.

Such BS! I am so sorry for your suffering. Dr Tennant wants patients to remain on their medications for pain control along with these other. He has a protocol that renews/ regrows those nerves. Look into it. Hopefully it can get you better. My prayers are with you.
