Great lesson thank you, this is one of my favorite songs, let alone my favorite EC song. It also has one of my favorite lines from any song "She's filing her nails while they're dragging the lake" The visual imagery he creates with his lyrics are amazing. Thanks again, love your lessons. Always spot on to whatever version of the song you're teaching (live, studio, etc)
I've always loved this song and now, thanks to your lesson, I've actually learned it well enough I can passably play along with the record after working at it for a few days. As a beginner it was just the right challenge for me and taught me some very useful basic skills. The hardest part was getting the relatively quick chord changes when it goes from C to G to E minor then to F and finally that quirky and beautiful D. Of all the learning tools I've come across your videos teach me the most, because you choose such terrific music to cover and get the "feel" across so effectively.
JJ - Thanks for picking apart this great song. "She's filing her nails while they're dragging the lake". Geez, what a vivid lyric. I've also never liked first position C on an electric, but can tolerate it on an acoustic. Can't verbalize why though.
+Chasbo Daniels I remember reading an interview with Elvis where he was giving Joni Mitchell props for her lyrics, citing the line in "Shades of Scarlett Conquering" that goes "With her impossibly gentle hands, and blood red fingernails." I always think that inspired this lyric.
My ultimate favourite lyric of all my days with ears on each side of my head ! Gives me chills Each time I hear it even after more than three decades...and yea 1st position C is the devil
My uncle used to use his thumb for the bass notes. And as I progressed on guitar, I find that's a good way for rhythm guitar parts, especially when you incorporate that F bass note to the A minor chord for flavor. I saw your thumb go there.
+James Richards He is an underrated lyricist, but he didn't write this one. Nick Lowe wrote it and recorded it back in 1974 with another band. There are videos of that band on RUclips.
Elvis says if you listen closely you can hear the drummer drop a stick (I've never caught it myself). Because the feel was so good he just kept playing with one hand and they kept the take.
Thanks. For some reason I have always had a hard time remembering the bridge chords. When you explained them as a walk up they will now be easy to remember. G,E,F,F#d
Man, you just keep providing the nuggets. I've been looking for a lesson on this great tune for a long time. Many thanks. Curious about the effect on the lead guitar, are you going with a tremolo pedal or just some delay?
An easy way to play the D with the F# bass is to use your....thumb, yes your thumb to play the F#. That's the way Elvis and Jimi did it, and that's the way I do it. Elvis played it with open chords also and he would pad his right hand on the strings to get that staccato effect with the open chords.
That's mostly an electric thing, because when you play a C chord at high volume with some gain, you get some nasty harmonics coming from those E notes. It's more tolerable on an acoustic...but I still don't really like it on an acoustic. :)
Great lesson. Mr. Diana Krall LOL some reason that circa late 70s of his was cool. Just can"t get into stuff he's doing since about 2008. Kinda like Van The Man some of his stuff off my radar too. Well dinner time to get Peterbilt rollin again.
That guitar is positively tits, F-holes and all. And those pick-ups look as bad-ass as they sound. Is that an old Gibson or Epiphone? Or maybe some obscure Gretch? Whatevahs, it's perfect for 'Detectives'. If you're in a Mr Krall mood again sometime, may I request 'Allison' and ''I'm Not Angry (Anymore)'? Your service to guitarists in America, and all over the World, is unsurpassed. I'll bet you're going to end up being Canonized by the Pope someday as a Holy Saint. Nice, great tune. Excellent lesson.

That's my favourite line too.

I'm really glad you did some more elvis costello. My friend and i are legitimately gonna cover this tonight. He's an underrated lyricist
+James Richards He is an underrated lyricist, but he didn't write this one. Nick Lowe wrote it and recorded it back in 1974 with another band. There are videos of that band on RUclips.
+James James Ah i actually didn't know that. I'll look em up.

nice, such a great song
You just inspired me to pick up my Silver series Squier and learn that:)
I love the D/F# in the chorus. Makes the song.
Nice one thanks!! Opted for an all barre chord version but this helped hugely
Love it!

+J Brooks Just delay on this one.
Thanks. Gave it a run after getting home from work and it felt great. How it sounded may be another story.
Lovely tone on that axe, my friend.

if you happen to have a Fender Jazzmaster lying around it helps
How come you don't like the open C chord? Is that just on electric or on acoustic as well?
That's mostly an electric thing, because when you play a C chord at high volume with some gain, you get some nasty harmonics coming from those E notes. It's more tolerable on an acoustic...but I still don't really like it on an acoustic. :)
James James Thanks for the tip! Best wishes from Australia :)
So many thanks!

Dr Joey I believe that’s a Harmony/Kay hollow body
Weird F?
Great job though thanks!
Fmaj7. Same as an F major barre except you leave the high E open.
