    Today, we dive into three ways to wear a Cartier Tank!! The most classic way is in a more formal setting, the kind of place you'd wear an Oxford shirt, slacks, and a blazer. It helps to elevate the outfit just slightly and, if needed, can also serve to make it more casual.
    Say that doesn't quite work for you, though - you need to be more professional but in a less formal way. Take the Oxford shirt, wrinkle it up a bit and leave it untucked, and match it with some more casual khakis and a slip on shoe of some kind, and you still look like you mean business, but without looking overdone.
    But how about even more casual than that? Grab an Oxford shirt that's perhaps a bit too colorful or funky for the office, throw on a pair of light wash Levi's, and a classic pair of Nikes, and it still looks wonderful (even if it isn't exactly the look that the designers intended).

    Me an asian with very small wrist wearing a so called "woman" watch screaming through the whole video: yes, YES, YESSSSS!!!

    • @Ocerry1
      @Ocerry1 4 года назад +21

      teh division into men/womens watches is incredibly narrow minded imo. I think that literally any watch is unisex. Ofc there are designs that are more feminine or masculine than others but to call a certain size of one and the same watch a "womens" watch is just stupid. I actually have fairly large wrists and I still absolutely Adore wearing a small 36mm gold watch from my great-grandfather just as much as I enjoy wearing my bulky Seiko Helmet Reissue wich is 45mm

    While I have no experience with a Tank (broke as hell), I find the same principle applies with my Orient Bambino. I bought it to serve as a dress watch, as my other watch was too thick and sporty for cuffs, but I wear it almost everywhere now. It looks absolutely great with just about everything.
    I know some of you may be thinking “the Bambino is 40mm, that’s no where near as refined as a Tank”. I have flat 8in wrists, trust me, it looks like 34mm on me.

  • @khronokraze
    @khronokraze 5 лет назад +10

    Absolutely! And, this watch and how it is actually more versatile than some might think, myself for a long time included, got me to rethink how you can wear many dress watches in more casual situations.
    It's just a matter of handing the vision, the mindset, and namely your own style and it'll all come together and make it happen and it works. It may not be to everyone's own personal dress code, but whatever. You do what you do your way and own it without fear, embarrassment nor regret.
    Hell, wear a Patek 2499 with a "wife beater" tank and surf shorts and flip flops. Who cares? The way I see it, if you can afford it, you've earned it so wear it however and whenever you like.
    How you wear a watch tells as much about yourself as the watch choice itself. It's the other half of your story or at least one of many facets of your persona to reflect and glisten in the sun.

  • @LanguagesWithAndrew
    @LanguagesWithAndrew 5 лет назад +16

    Love it, agreed. I also hate the "fight against formality" (excellent way of phrasing it). There's nothing wrong with dressing nicely despite your job not requiring it. I have a book recommendation for you if you haven't already read it: "Dressing the Man", by Alan Flusser. It's just your thing, you'll love it.

    Harry Fane is in Singapore today and he is having an exhibition of his Cartier tank collection from the 1920s to 1970s. It is my first time seeing 30 over Cartier tanks in one shot and they are such amazing watches. Most of them houses movements from watchmaker Edmond Jaeger and besides the well finished high quality movements, the design of the watches are so elegant and irreplaceable. Real Gentlemen wear their little gold Cartier!

    I am currently thinking of the JLC Reverso and was looking for "casual outfit" inspiration. Great video man, this is exactly what I needed. These watches have been advertised as "the special occasion watch" and in most collections they get never worn which is a shame. They do look fantastic in smart casual scenarios.

    I have a real penchant for watches that go with the semi formal attire I wear whilst lecturing at a university (plain trousers, oxford shirt and a herringbone jacket). My first watch to go with that attire was an entry level 36mm Nomos club with an oxblood Cordovan leather strap. If I ever get tenure, I am getting myself a gold Tank Americaine!

    My Patek 3998J is my dress watch. It goes great with a suit or professional work clothes. I’ve paired it with jeans and a sweater and the entire outfit worked. I think the key ingredient to wearing a gold dress watch with something other than a dress outfit is having the confidence to do so and not apologizing for it.

    I watched this video for the third or fourth time now and as far as I can remember it was the one which made me think about the Tank Americaine. Nowadays you are used to see sports watches, especially diver watches, combined with every possible outfit and I am no exception to this as I chose my first nice watch, an Omega SMP 300, for being that versatile. I wear it with casual attire, semi formal and sometimes even with a tuxedo. So why not going the opposite way and picking a much more dressy watch and combine it with much less formal attire?

    Spectacular video and advice ... It's really a shame how quick we've forgotten that the men who fought against hate and to protect our freedoms in WWII wore 31-35mm watches on a daily basis (and while overseas). Nothing about a diamond-crusted Daytona screams "sophistication" - it simply screams "nouveau riche" and frankly, tasteless.
    All of my watches in my collection today are either 35 or 36, including a Tudor Black Bay and Rolex 116000. I'm looking at adding a dedicated dress watch and it will be between the Nomos Orion 35 or Cartier Tank Solo.

    • @carrahignett1643
      @carrahignett1643 9 месяцев назад

      Nobody went to war to fight "against hate" (America was still segregated, lol) - this is post-war myth building, to reinforce modern political/cultural dogma. The average person went because they thought it was their patriotic duty or simply because they were drafted by law.
      That aside, I agree with the point you were trying to make - these weren't ever considered feminine watches by any stretch of the imagination, until fairly recently.

  • @tzmcneill
    @tzmcneill 5 лет назад +2

    Actually, yes and no. In my opinion, these smaller watches work well on people with smaller frames. If you look at the average jacket size from soldiers in WWII, it was something between a 34 and 36, that soldier also weighted under 140 lbs. The watches of the time were made with the average man in mind, who was much smaller than the average man today. The average man today wears a size 42 jacket and probably weighs between 180 - 190 lbs. That's a 22% increase in weight alone. So, to scale, a 32mm watch made for a man in the 1950's, assuming he was would have weighed less than 140 lbs and wore a size 34 jacket, would be 35.3mm on a modern sized man. A 34 mm watch scaled up 22% by area would be 37.5 mm. So, yes, the small watches of the 1930's through the 1970 were great, and if you can wear them and you like them, great, but on most average sized modern men, then might look a little small.

    Let us not forget straps!! The same watch with a neutral taupe with a matte finish and no stitch style makes the watch even more versatile. Or grey croc with contrasting white stitch or dark grey stitch.

    Loved the narration. Bring the archaic charm with so much of class, it sounds cool to even the most hip urban youth.

    Man Christian, I come back to videos like these so often for inspiration dude. Both clothing and watches. You truly have a talent of rebranding classic style for a younger audience. More of this would definitely be appreciated!

    What size is this? It does look like a large size Tank Americaine, correct me if I’m incorrect. Then 45 x26.5 is not small at all it is a fairly good size for men wrist.
