Excellent jig, so simple but effective. Thanks.

David, do you simply tap threads into the hardwood for the brass screws, or do you use threaded inserts of some kind? Have you found that the threads wear out? These are short machine screws, right?

Bob, I used over long brass screws with a nice coarse thread. The protruding part was sawn off and polished a bit!
I hope the combination of very hard wood and coarse threads will last a fair time.

The wedge/fulcrum/jaw design asks the wood for high withdrawal resistance at the fulcrum screws, which seems to be related to the wood’s density. I have a scrap stick of jatoba I’ll set aside for this.

It seems the withdrawal load on the screw threads is related to the wood density, which is also correlated with hardness. I have a scrap stick of jatoba I'll set aside for this. Clever design. I'll see if I can pull it off.

Hello David; great video and I love your method. I purchased your volume 3 book and it’s very valuable and thank you for your time. I have a question, do you have better dimensions available for the Odate spokeshave holder? The drawing in the book is missing much needed dimensions and the inch dimensions are absolutely preposterous but I assume the metric dimensions are correct. Is it possible to get a much more detailed drawing for the spokeshave holder?

Thank you for your comments. Yes the inch dimensions are pure garbage (courtesy of the publishers).
I think the metric ones look all right, suggest you draw it out for yourself and see how you get on. There are no more detailed plans available.
      best wishes, David

David Charlesworth , Thank you for your reply. Yes I have laid it out and did a measurement of the book drawing in millimeters and calculated the ratio to actual given dimensions to realize some of the dimensions that are missing. I was a machinist and fabricator most of my life so figuring it out is no problem, I just thought you may have had a drawing handy to upload. I’m about half way through the two I’m building now. This holder is exactly what I’ve been looking for to sharpen these pesky spokeshave blades. I’ve always gotten along fairly well by hand but my guide is more convenient to me than some of the variation I get when I sharpen freehand. Keep making chips!

    Hi David,
I know you posted this video like forever ago, but if you still review your posted videos such as this one periodically and answer a few posited questions, could you tell me if you either sell the plans to these special jigs you are making and use on and off the Tormek machine? I know that Lie-Nielson sells some of your products, but is the information I'm seeking contained within any of those videos? Or do you offer up such plans on your RUclips site that I might have missed? Thank you for sharing your sharpening jig inventions with us woodworkers that are not as creative/inventive as you. I tell my wife that while I may not be able to create "stuff" out of the blue like other woodworkers, as a trained monkey, I can replicate cool items with some effort. LOL. Thank you.
    Semper Fi,
    John

John, there are no plans for marking knife jig. My spokeshave blade holder is in my third book Tools & methods, but be warned some of the dimensions are incorrect thanks to my lovely publishers.
      Best wishes, David

@@DavidCharlesworth GOOD NEWS I have now done a suitable drawing of the spokeshave blade jig with correct dimensions!
