I remember Will Durst, Rudy Reber's Phone-a-Friend was interviewed about this when Millionaire had a documentary of some sort. He was still on the phone (on hold) listening in and he said that as soon as he heard the correct answer, he could not breathe for three days. We can't hate on him too much in all seriousness, I mean yeah he did cost Rudy $218K there, but I'm sure a mix-up like that was easy to make, especially how much the question was for. Still, I know it was a tough break for Rudy, but he handled it with class and sportsmanship, and I gotta respect that.
He didn't say he couldn't breathe for three days. His exact words were "I haven't taken a deep breath for days", which is not the same thing at all lol. If he couldn't breathe at all for 3 days, he wouldn't be alive lol
He's before David Forman. I can remember he accepted his $218,000 loss very gladly. When Kati Knudsen lost $218,000 on the 7/30/00 episode of Millionaire, she was oh so mad. She literally HAD the answer.
@@isaacmemtorie3347 The phone-a-friend just heard who directed the Michael Jackson video and immediately thought of John Landis, because he directed the most iconic and well-known Michael Jackson music video. It never crossed his mind that it could be a different music video in question. This is why it's important not to jump the gun and mull over the questions carefully, especially at the 500k level (granted this is very difficult to do when you only have 30 seconds).
@eric21200 One of my favorite contestants to miss a $500,000 question and walk away with 32 grand. Even Lawrence Caplan and Richard Klimkiewitz were gutsy despite losing $218,000. So I admire those other two contestants’ gutsy efforts despite falling short.
Also, about Lawrence's question, the correct answer, "One Sweet Day" was the only one of the four I'd never heard, so I probably would've ruled it out.
Just re-watched the clip with Kati. She took it really hard and I actually said she was a good contestant. I regret that, her attitude was a little unecessary
Does anyone know where Rudy went from here? There's a few interviews from after this aired but I know he didn't do any Netflix specials or anything but be may well have been busy, I'm not deep in the stand up world
NGL, when I heard that it was a DURST who fucked him over with a Corey Trevor confident answer.... I died rolling on the floor laughing at the irony. Bahahhahhahaha
Yeah, Landis directed "Thriller", which is a much more well-known and iconic music video given the theming and choreography. It's not too surprising that someone could get the two mixed up in a situation like this. That's probably why the show put it there. Not technically a trick question, but one that could very easily cause a less careful contestant to trip up.

Rudy Reber apparently forgave Durst for this. I probably would've been mad and told him he owes me $218k lol (or whatever the difference is after taxes).
Taking that attitude means you won't have friends to call on for the show. Nobody will help you if that's your general attitude in life. Sometimes contestants that seemed more off-putting also had pretty desperate PAF choices. I feel like there was an inadvertent challenge of character and empathy on this show.

Fooled me too. Landis directed Thriller.
He also directed Jackson's Black or White music video.

But he did scold Will somehow by calling him a dog so to me that is equally hard. And watch how Rudy exited
As much as we're all hating on Durst here it's really easy to just get Thriller and Bad mixed up in a pinch like that...
But Thriller was 5 whole years earlier in 1983.
Great point

That $5,000 question remark was hilarious as the 5th question was that value starting in 2009.
Rodney Turner would play in a syndicated episode in 2007. David Forman plays later in game, Scott Stone comes back to win Fastest finger in 2001.
If there was a 50/50 on this question it would have been either Scorcese or Landis.
@Wata Machine Supposedly.
Think of Stephen King for that $100 question.
One of my favorite contestants!

Handled that 218k loss way better than Kati did. Left with a smile.

Especially because it seems like she didn't get that high on skill, at least based on my observations. Too much of it was luck.
Right? At least he didn’t act all entitled.
Especially since he got screwed way harder.
@@bellabliss1860 I imagine they both Rudy & Durst used this as a story in their respective stand up comedy shows.
Either the contestant intro music isn't there, or the audience were very loud.
It's there, but drowned out by the seemingly more excited than usual audience!

How old is Rudy Reber in the wwtbam episode?
He was 52 when he was on the show.
That was a tough loss but really nice contestant
GamingFanactic911 it may have been a tough loss but the way he played it made him look like an idiot
@@thekingscastlepodcast1224 Why? He was basing his answer off of his friends seemingly confident answer.
@@sedevacante966 Exactly. Rudy asked "Are you sure?" and then "You know for a fact?" and his friend responded yes both times.

It was a trick question...the guy thought it was Thriller. I knew the answer BTW :)

"Yes."

I probably would have gone with either Martin Scorsese or Francis Ford Coppola on that particular $500,000 Question.
I think the Hollywood figure directed Michael Jackson's 1988 video "Bad" is Martin Scorsese!
"Bad" is from 1987, not '88.

What a bad advice from his friend Durst! If I was Rudy, I would walk away with $250,000
