I was told Black Gate used a proprietary electrolytic formula that is very strong.
My guess is the electrolytic ate its way through and evaporated out , leaving deposits behind. Your fingers should be wet with electrolite.

@jeffharper410 It was definitely dry inside. I am going to replace some other Black Gates from the same amplifier that are still functioning and will take one of those apart to see if it is dry as well. Thanks for the comment.

@vintageav I have a pair of Audion Golden Dreams right now .
They are level 6 , so upgraded with Black Gates and silver wire.
      $23k new 18 years ago!
The noise floor was over 50db. At 9:00 o'clock on the volume control. All 8 big Black Gates have high ESR and dry as a bone.
I am ordering Audio Note replacments.

@@jeffharper410what audio note caps are you looking at?

The AN Kaisi series use the same electrolytes as the Rubycon Black Gates.
I actually think the standard AN electrolytics are more neutral sounding . The Elna Simic II and AN capacitors are my go too.

I always store my amplifiers upside down when I'm not using them, in case the electrolyte escapes the capacitors.
