If the US government had funded NASA more, we would have probably been to Mars and set up a colony there by now. NASA's funding is only 0.5% of the total annual budget. While military is something like 60% (don't quote me on this). Spending so much on this wouldn't amount to anything in the near future. Or how about a space program that might actually save any species from this Earth? Ask yourself the following questions: 1. Ask yourself: How exactly do galaxies form? The current narrative is that matter, via gravity, attracts other matter. 2. Ask yourself: How exactly do galaxies become spiral shaped in a cause and effect state of existence? At least one way would be orbital velocity of matter with at least gravity acting upon that matter, would cause a spiral shaped effect. 3. Ask yourself: What does that mean for a solar system that exists in a spiral shaped galaxy? Most probably that solar system would be getting pulled toward the galactic gravitational center. 4. Ask yourself: What does that mean for species that exist on a planet, that exists in a solar system, that exists in a spiral shaped galaxy, in an apparent cause and effect state of existence? Most probably that if those species don't get off of that planet, and out of that solar system, and probably out of that galaxy too, (if it's even actually possible to do for various reasons), then they are all going to die one day from something and go extinct with probably no conscious entities left from that planet to care that they even ever existed at all in the first place, much less whatever they did and or didn't do with their time of existence. 5. Ask yourself: For those who might make it out of this galaxy, (here again, assuming it could actually be done for various reasons), where to go to next, how long to get there, how to safely land, and then, what's next? Hopefully they didn't land in another spiral shaped galaxy or a galaxy that would become spiral shaped one day, otherwise, they would have to galaxy hop through the universe to stay alive, otherwise, they still die one day from something with no conscious entities being left from the original planet to care they even ever existed at all in the first place, much less that they made it out of their own galaxy. They failed to consciously survive throughout all of future eternity. 6. Ask yourself: What exactly matters throughout all of future eternity and to whom does it exactly and eternally matter to? Either at least one species truly consciously survives throughout all of future eternity somehow, someway, somewhere, in some state of existence, even if only by a continuous succession of ever evolving species, for life itself to have continued meaning and purpose to, OR none do and life itself is all ultimately meaningless in the grandest scheme of things. My assessment of the present situation is that we need theoretical physics to catch up with experimental physics before committing huge expenditure to a new higher energy collider. What the LHC did very effectively was to show that there is no experimental evidence for supersymmetry which is in itself an important result. When you look at the standard model of particle physics we seem to have gone from a state where it was clear that there were three quarks to a proton and a neutron to maybe there could be five to maybe everything is a field and particles are just excitations of the field with there being 21 different fields each with parameters derived from experimental data. With particle physics in such a state of flux and with quantum theory being challenged as incomplete it seems to me that we should be looking to address some basic theoretical ideas before devising new experiments. Maybe our fundamental ideas need revision so that we think in terms of waves rather than particles. www.academia.edu/5927513/The_Spacetime_Wave_Theory www.academia.edu/5038836/The_Unification_of_Physics Richard
Theoretical physics doesn't appear out of nowhere. Most of it came from modeling observations in the real world. The most optimal solution is gathering data on reality and looking for more patterns.
@@pretzelboi64 Normally I would agree with you but we are talking about huge sums of money to be invested in a follow on project when I have my doubts about the theoretical conclusions from the current LHC. I once took an excellent online course put on by Future learn describing the LHC and one of the things I learnt is that the detectors generate so much data that both experiments (Atlas and DMS) have to filter out the bulk of the data and just keep the data that they are looking for. The discovery of the Higgs boson was not totally convincing in the sense that much was made of a small blip on a curve which was seen in one of the test runs. This does not seem to me to be a convincing verification of the standard model of particle physics. The descriptive narrative concerning the Higgs field and how it gives mass to the fundamental particles seems to me in contradiction of the descriptive narrative of The General Theory of Relativity concerning the property mass. It is an amazing scientific and engineering achievement to build the LHC. However, I can see clearly that the whole edifice of fundamental physics is crumbling and in a few years time when we talk about the structure of the atom we will be studying wave physics and not particle physics. With this theoretical backdrop I think it would be wrong to spend huge sums of money on the next generation LHC when in a few years time the experimental verification required is based on different fundamental theories. www.academia.edu/5927513/The_Spacetime_Wave_Theory Richard
In my view scientific research budgets should be allocated on the basis of relative urgency. The most critical fields of study for dealing with known current problems that humanity faces should get higher priority. Theoretical physics is worthy of study but should be lower priority than observation and practical application in other areas.
@@stupidburp Hi Stu. I agree with you completely but sometimes it is difficult to assess how important fundamental research will be in expanding our understanding until we have actually completed the research. For example fundamental theoretical physics has suffered from under funding even though projects like the LHC are approved. It is only when we have achieved a full understanding of physics at the smallest and most basic level that we will be in a position to apply that knowledge to other areas such as the operation of the brain which is a very special mix of physics and biology. It is a high priority to understand how the brain operates and little progress is being made at the present because of a lack of understanding of fundamental physics. Richard
I could imagine dark matter being a lattice of particles with high density, that would explain why it has significant mass but light does not interact with any of it's surfaces
There's a Frankie Boyle joke about this - I hope that if the experiment is successful, the whole of our reality will dissolve, and a big sign will come up that says 'Level 2'.

biases in the scientific field would need to be passively eliminated. a common goal for excellence, organization. real researchers looking for unbiased results generally do not get the funding they need, and are less driven by real progress, while those trying to sway opinion with selected variables or those missing the mark get much more. its a distribution. sure there can be a good study on how it should be done and where the problems come from and by whom if its not been done already. systemic reviews are usually more accurate in findings, as hindsight is 20/20 or better.

Or how about a space program that might actually save any species from this Earth?
Ask yourself the following questions:
