I know I am so mad I got the anniversary edition of E.T. on DVD and each scene with E.T. in it was replaced by CGI they completely removed the puppet/robot E.T. and that was the best part!!!!!!!!!!!! :'(
Christopher Nolan is not a fan of CGI. Whether you like his films or not, he does as much practical effects as possible and only use CGI when he needs to.
John Curcio He really should have won a academy award for Best Actor for this movie! If Ridley Scott had decided to make another LEGEND movie, I would love to help him produce or co direct the film.
This movie has influenced me in every way artistically. As a child, I was amazed by it...and as an adult, I still think it is one of the best fantasy films ever made.
SLEEPTHIEFofficial I'm always about the fantasy movies, etc. that EXPAND your world/imagination, that have something REALLY there that is truly unique, memorable, deeply meaningful in often an indescribable way. For me, in addition to Legend (with live actors in fantasy), I'd add Ladyhawke, The Boy Who Could Fly, Mirror Mask, Willow, the Golden Compass, the Labyrinth, the Hobbit, the original Willy Wonka movie WITH the singing, the 1975 British Alice in Wonderland (ONLY certain parts, NOT the singing), Riddick, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and maybe a few others.
Transforming Tim Curry into Darkness was undoubtedly one of the greatest accomplishments in SFX history. I still can’t believe to this day that it was Tim Curry under that disguise. I mean, he was 8ft 1", the tallest monster ever played by a physical actor!!! But after listening to him in Ferngully and Mighty Max, I could easily recognise the voice. You cannot deny the man had one of the mightiest voices in Hollywood.
This movie is still one of my top ten 80's choices!!! Tim Curry's LOD is BAR NONE the best interpretation of a devil character that i have EVER seen on film...
Most of today's actors wouldn't go through this type of 'suffering' for their art. (Especially now that technology has advanced to the point where we can 'create' CGI 'people') They should take a page out of Tim Curry's book, he's hardcore, which is why he's so highly regarded as an actor.
Noah Corpus Christopher Lee would be a decent runner up I think. His height is in his favor, his very deep bass voice, as well as his eyes/expressions, but his mouth size isn't quite what Curry's is.
I remember seeing this film on TV when I was a kid. One of the most beautiful stories I've ever seen! some 20 years later I bought it on DVD and still come back to it from time to time. People complain nowadays about "poor" effects of "old" films but they don't understand that it's not effects that make a great film, it's a story and the way that story is told (shown). I miss those days when you could watch something that would bewitched you and let your imagination to do the rest. Now we have transformers and films that you can only watch when you are drunk 'cause there is no other way to last 'till the end and not commit suicide...
Ridley smiles and laughs more here than in all other interviews he has given put together. I think he still has a soft spot for LEGEND despite all the disasters, re-edited versions and multiple scores.
always said this was one of the better "sword and sorcery" movies of the '80's...never understood why it didn't get much recognition or critical praise.....
As a movie it's actually not that great. It's thin and quite pantomime like in terms of the performances. However, if taken purely as an art piece it's phenomenal!
I loved this moving so much growing up in the 80's. I wore out 2 VHS tapes, I was so glad when they released the DVD with the original soundtrack and the Tangerine Dream soundtrack. Don't get me wrong the OST is good, Jerry Goldsmith did a fine job, but I grew up with the Tangerine Dream version here in t he USA. The movie feels completely different with OST, like something was missing. This is my favorite movie of all time, my favorite Tim Curry movie, and Tom Cruise movie as well. I still don't understand why Tom Cruise is embarrassed about this movie. It was a reverse of the typical Disney Princess movie. It gave boys who loved fantasy films a chance to dream about finding their princess and becoming her prince. I'm not ashamed to admit that, that aspect is one of the things I loved the most about this film as a boy. It also made you feel like magic was just a touch real for a little bit. Ridley Scott is a friggin legend for pulling this movie off on the budget he had as well.
Absolutely one of the scariest characters to date. How can you look at this character and not be afraid of him. Great fun. Wonderful film. Top 10 for me.
It breaks my heart that Tim Curry is in such a bad health status. His stroke made it where we will never see him again, eventually we will see that he's died and i pray the world will pray for him. I love him so much for everything he has done in the entertainment industry, we all just sit here waiting for any news from him, but it will never happen until something dire is broadcast upon the news.....
For the longest time I had actually believed that Tim Curry's character was a real life creature! lol I mean thats how superb the make up was done in this film. I first watched this in 1989 when I was 4 years of age and as a solid chunky 4 year old sitting there watching this is when I completely convinced myself that Tim Curry's character was a real life creature, despite the fact that my family was telling me he was just an actor with a lot of makeup. I was thinking they just dont know the truth. But yeah I was pretty entranced, mesmerized, transfixed by this film with the shiny treasure and other glistening scenes the scary monsters, the young boy and gorgeous girl, the cool armor and sword and the idea a young boy could overcome and prevail against pure evil darkness was all extremely appealing to me. It inspired me to want to be a hero and with my gear and sword I could slay any foul creature from the deep murky abyss. You know I have toy mention it didnt help aid my past inexperienced adolescent suspicions when I saw 6:54 I was thinking How could he rise so seamlessly in those stilts. Maybe it was s real creature and they just chose an actor that most resembles its face ! LOL.........jk but still so seamlessly did he rise......???
I've never seen this film but seeing that Rob Bottin is added to this film, no wonder that Devil make-up and costume looks so amazing. Plus, Tim muthafukin Curry.
Tim Curry is an underrated actor, in my opinion. I first saw him in Clue, then in Legend, and then it was like IT and Criminal Minds. I am on a Tim Curry binge right now to catch up on all his work (minus the home alone sequel, I just can't).
Phenomenal commentary - thanks so much for posting this! Really highlights some key aspects: the "architecture" (i.e., art + engineering) of the Darkness costume and physical demands on / from Curry. Margie Lazou Tim Curry, Jack Nicholson, Christopher Lee, Al Pacino, Willem Dafoe, Hugo Weaving, Jim Carrey, Jason Isaacs, and so forth. Angelica Huston and Bette Midler for the women. All of them just EXCEL at playing the big bad... :D

So excited to say I saw this movie last night with my daughter and brother @Alamo Draft House in Corpus Christi TX and even 35 yrs later it is still one of the best movies... No one can top Tim Curry as Darkness...loved it!!!
best makeup job for a devil i ever seen, there has been many i seen wearing the same makeup ect. but they dont even come close to how good an real tim curry looks as darkness
Tim is so drop dead gorgeous with and without make-up no matter what character he plays. He truly is one of the greatest actors ever, for he can play ANYTHING in any kind of movie. Oh, I wish I could. . . . heheheheee.

When I was a kid and first saw this movie as a preteen, I immediately recognized the voice of Tim Curry, but thought that the person wearing the makeup was the actor Brian Thompson who played the part of Bozworth in Fright Night #2.
I watched this when I was like 5. Loved it. Watched it again for the first time recently and all I could think is how much this would TERRIFY my niece and nephew!! So much scarier today!!
Rob Bottin is a freaking genius. 30+ years on, Darkness remains the best single-character makeup in film history, IMO. Just brilliant. And, as Ridley mentioned, well-engineered, to boot. It's one thing to turn a man into a 13-foot-tall demon. Quite another to make it possible for him to do that full-tilt run he does in it.
Tim nailed that part. I really love this film, enjoyed it as a child and a adult. Ridley playing tennis bit made me lol, a good lesson. Shame we miss what scene that set would have been used for.
I like his positive attitude with his Set being on fire you can either be upset,Angry,Scared or you can be calm, positive and hopeful he was calm positive and hopeful👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I heard a quote once when I was a child that has stayed with me: “Sometimes even the devil deserves a LITTLE pity.” That certainly holds true in “Legend” if you stop and think about it. The devil in this particular case is a victim of Fate. He was BORN like this, he wasn’t made like this! He didn’t choose to look like that; who willingly chooses to be ugly? What’s more, he said himself, “Sunlight is my destruction!” So, for him, evil isn’t a choice, it’s a necessity. In a way, he’s just like all the other unfortunate people suffering from xendoderma pigmentosum, one of the original sources for the vampire curse--a potentially FATAL condition triggered by exposure to sunlight. Imagine seeing so much beauty linked to a spring/summer/fall/winter day, but never getting to share in it, because if you do, it’ll most likely be your last day alive. Wouldn’t that make you sad and mad? Also, when Darkness goes and allows himself to fall in love--possibly for the very first time ever in his life--what happens? The woman he loves fears and loathes him! What’s more, she uses his feelings for her to get close enough to the unicorn to free it, thereby all but guaranteeing Darkness’ death! First heartbreaks are the worst, especially for those who’ve never gotten to know the sweetness of love before! Anyway, I’ve said my peace, and will welcome any feedback for it. It can be an official debate thing.
This guy (and strangely Rochefort from the Disney version of Three Musketeers) were likely the reason I'm so drawn to villains nowadays. And monster men lol
Too bad they don't make films like this anymore. CGI has made Hollywood lazy.
He has deserved it for all of his roles! I love him!❤️❤️❤️
I know I am so mad I got the anniversary edition of E.T. on DVD and each scene with E.T. in it was replaced by CGI they completely removed the puppet/robot E.T. and that was the best part!!!!!!!!!!!! :'(
Christopher Nolan is not a fan of CGI. Whether you like his films or not, he does as much practical effects as possible and only use CGI when he needs to.
Amanda Bell i thought the new Blu-Ray editions is the original edition because E.T. is practical and they give the agents their guns back.
CGI deserves the same respect as make up. It takes a lot of effort to make it, probably even more than old effects
Tim deserved an Oscar Nomination for this performance.
Pssh Try 2 Oscars he really was the Devil..."Mm Have A Lovely Daay!" Lol
Best performance ever.....ever.
John Curcio He really should have won a academy award for Best Actor for this movie! If Ridley Scott had decided to make another LEGEND movie, I would love to help him produce or co direct the film.
I totally agree!
He deserves an Oscar only for existing
NO one could have portrayed this character better! Tim Curry's voice fits perfectly!
Absolutely agree!!😃👌
Best devil EVER! Hands down, no contest.
Actually not the Devil, rather the son of the Devil. In one scene, he is talking to the fireplace and calls it "Father".
@@joegriego3091 He isn't referring to "THE Devil" as in Lucifer or Satan, but rather Devil as a species if you will.
Yes!!!!!!! Couldn't agree more!!!!
He’s probably my favorite but Peter Stormare in the movie Constantine was epic too.
Him and Al Pacino are the best on screen takes of Satan ever, in my opinion.
I would not like to even comprehend a world without the films- Legend, Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, Goonies, The Never Ending Story.
Valiant Bruizer well said. The muppets. American werewolf in London. Star Wars. The road warrior. Indiana Jones. Back to the future.
Then you should read The Neverending Story. The creature effects are great, but the book is VASTLY better than the movie.
It’s funny how you think something and then see someone comment on it on RUclips
And Watership Down!!
Don't forget "Willow" and "The Last Unicorn"!
This movie has influenced me in every way artistically. As a child, I was amazed by it...and as an adult, I still think it is one of the best fantasy films ever made.

I can't think of a more compelling and well made fantasy film of the 80's than Legend, and it's still one of the best.
One of the most underrated films. Exquisite conception and execution.
this movie makes Tim Curry even more of a Legend now x

"I value your thoughts, share them with me"
Best classy pickup line, ever.

completely agree!
Rudal and there was very little CGI
Transformer's was 🔥.
Why is Tim Curry so attractive. Even when he's not acting his voice is so musical o___o
Why is Tim so attractive? He's Tim fucking Curry!
Dr. Frank-N-Furter
Yes. But how? How did he come to be?
We need a story as to how he became an attractive acting god.
No movie have ever captured again the magic this movie has, nightmares and dreams combined together

It's because so much of the success of a character like that is in the subtle mannerisms, the weight of movement. It's very hard to CGI that well.
