I just had No prior notice about being interviewed nor have been involved with music since 1989. To recall information was very difficult having held a high pressured employment with a government office.
Deep attention had to be paid and to talk about music again needed super effort to get through the fog. DJ’ing was just a hobby and not a serious concentration as much as the interviewer. Thank you for your kind consideration as I have NOT followed raving and just went out on this rare occasion to support a friend. 🙏🏽

This was pretty hard work to watch, let alone participate in. The interviewer is merely trying to act as a documentarian and his intention as I understand it comes purely from a place of nostalgia. It begs the question that if the other gentleman didn't want to be involved then why didn't he just decline to be interviewed? In any event the term "Rare Groove" is one which was probably distilled and attributed generically. Most likely it would have come from within the collection of DJs and pirate radios station broadcasters who were the ones playing it at the time. It wasn't a reference to any specific music genre, which I think is a misconception and one that has developed over time and become more commonplace at a later date. It was simply a designation that was assigned to the original catalogue of those rare and hard to find vinyl records which were the "go to" tracks these DJs were using to ignite the dancefloors, at their events. These tracks were from every genre with Funk, Soul, Disco and Boogie all heavily represented and these functions were predominantly frequented by Black patrons and took place all across the UK. As time went by it became something of a competive art form amongst the DJs and other music connoisseurs, to try and "one up" each other and also expand the catalogue, by discovering more and more of these obscure records. The aim here was to "break a new tune" which could then gain widespread dancefloor approval and popularity, from those in attendance and also other DJs. Acceptance could them potentially propel the track on to becoming included in the Rare Groove pantheon. This was of course all unofficial. The criteria for inclusion was largely undefined back then and the passing of time has not offered any more clarity. It is one of the reasons why you can pretty much guarantee that if you put ten people in a room and ask them to list their ten favourite Rare Groove tunes, you will, in all probability get ten different lists. The request in fact may well generate a heated debate amongst the participants because what one person claims as a Rare Groove track someone else may actually dispute.

Basically what the guy who is being interviewed is saying is “I have moved on, I’m doing bigger and better things, I don’t need to hark back to the sweaty Wag days. Listen to the language I’m using, I have moved on and you’re still at the Wag.”
He comes across as a bit of a snob but he probably isn’t.
That said don’t think we’re gonna see him anytime soon at a “back in the day “ weekender.😂

Why is this gentleman complicating as simple thing or music type. My opinion raregroove umbrellas old soul , country, funk music, that has a specific sound and feel. That will make you move and feel a certain way, it oozed class, style, cool, sexy, beautiful, family so so many things. Love to dance with someone or in my own .

I had to turn this guy off. The beauty of rare groove is that it's such a wide yet unique genre at the same time. It's a soulful feeling. How anyone can take issue with that is beyond me.
