Good question! But it’s hard to say because a lot of Touhou is mythical retelling a of characters from Japanese history and even foreign literature (Remilia and Medicine). Even the spell card names often have some relevance to a fable or short story or historical factoid. It’s one of the things I love about the series. I even learned things from non-Japanese lit I didn’t know, like that vampires can’t cross running water. Which apparently comes from (iirc) Bram Stoker. The series is amazing and the creator ZUN is an unstoppable creative one-man powerhouse.

I remember when I first interacted with Touhou through Undertale and this video (also the first Touhou video I ever watched), I used to think about it as some sort of dark shounen anime like AoT with a more diverse world-building than One Piece or Jojo, like how I used to mistake the Yakumo families being the Gensokyo Sages with absolute commands over the land controlling the youkais who I thoughtare mythical beasts commiting mass genocide and abnormal anomalies known as incidents or how I viewed the relationship between Sanae, Reimu, and Marisa the same as Sasuke, Naruto, and Sakura. Ah good old time
