Great video! the biggest problem people have with their setups is no patients, if something seems like it's not working they start rummaging around in it, or try and find some type of remedy to fix it and sometimes it makes the problem a lot worse and costly, these days shops have a remedy for just about anything and when I worked in an aquarium store the wanted you to push it as it made money, some will help but only short term and the problem remains while you pump money into your tank, if you have a planted tank like this your going to run into short algae breaks ext. the best thing to do it try and think of what's going on the cause it and then try and rectify the problem instead of trying to find a quick fix, you have done well with this setup, you have had patients slowly stocked it accordingly, not just gone and thrown a heap of fish in at once even though you have the means to. fertilising lightly to start off with is good just to see what your demands for the plants are rather then over dosing you can gradually increase the doses if the plants look like they need it, you haven't done frequent water changes that actually do more harm then good in a planted tank as you would be removing all the good nutrient the plants need and then you tend to get unbalanced water, let the plants do the work for you and you have, now that it's balanced and aged you are going to add more fish they will produce more waste for your plants to feed on so you won't have to fertilise as much as well, this just demonstrates what can be done on a low budget and you have done well, you live a busy life style as well so you don't want to be hovering over your tank 24/7 and you won't need to, just an occasional bit of maintenance for your little ecosystem, thanks for sharing and being an honest fish supplier it's very refreshing because I know your in the position where you could actually be pushing a lot of product and you don't, sometimes I hate how the industry tries to push products we don't really need in most cases just to prey on customers, you will find a good store will try and help first rather then push remedies on you.
Please yes do more set up tanks - us beginners really appreciate it. I think more beginners watch these videos over seasoned professionals! They already know what they are doing - we don't! xx
I love the 'natural' look of this tank, the grunginess of it. So much more interesting than a pristine tank cleaned to within an inch of its life. Plus the fact it requires less work to maintain is a bonus as well. Definitely want to see regular updates on the tank's progress or lack of as well more tank build type videos.
Your discipline and integrity reminds me of my boys ( my nephew's ). Like them, I see the efficiency in your endeavors. I wish you continued success young man.
Honestly seeing the problems you had with this tank from the previous video made me feel better about my own journey. A lot of fishtube is curated to make the creators seem like everything they touch turns to gold 😂
It's so great to see this! I have actually been running my tanks the same way for the last years after I found about the wonders of house plants. All with no filters and no water changes and no siphoning (this part is actually the most important since over the months, bacteria is going to colonize the substrate and act as a filter). I've kept this way 7 aquariums with the biggest being a 150cm with big Manacapuru Angels and 2 pairs of Ivanacara. For me it's a great way to keep an aquarium, no effort, very wild looking and very safe for the fish. It looks "dirty' overtime though so I understand this might not be suited for everyone. And also beginners are better off starting out the "traditional way" since everyone of us starting out tends to be impulsive and a bit paranoid, and touching and cleaning constantly a system like this really hurts it.
Hell yeah, love all your content. The fishroom tours, breeding techniques, trips etc.. But this is something i havent seen much from you, and it came out nice. Great tank, perfect stocking paired with some nice planting. And your genuine appreciation for the setup shows and made for some amazing content. So thanks for sharing.
Yep love it, great job! Definitely love to see more and it's great experience. So many different scape styles to explore and play with especially with different tank sizes. So many possibilities.
Love how well it is growing in and how nice the fish look in it! I hope you consider setting up another houseplant filters tank like this. Plants out the tops of ponds and aquariums are wonderful and I wish more people would give it a try!
Haha love how he said what he added would be good for growing pot! You know what else is great at growing pot… the amazing nutritional water you get from doing water changes. Pot or any house plants love it!
Looks very nice and very natural, which is the way these things should be. Some people like heaps of synthetic bright colours as they dream an artificial reef looks like - other people , prefer something, well, more natural. To add a little bit of natural colour, how about a red anthurium. 😊
Your Aquarium is absolutely beautiful. I enjoyed the story of the development of this Aquarium. And despite the ordeal you had, you have pulled through, and the result is phenomenal as now you can kick back and enjoy watching the life in that glass house. Out of appreciation to you for taking the time to produce this content to share with us viewers, the video has now been given the 493rd like 🤙🏼to say thankyou very much. Take care, Sir. 🤙🏼🙂🤙🏼❤️
I just want to say a huge thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience in fish breeding. Your dedication and passion are truly inspiring! I'm new to breeding myself, and your content has been a fantastic resource to help me get started here in Kenya. I’d really love to connect and maybe even chat with you to learn more, especially from someone as experienced as you. It would mean a lot if you could get back to me-looking forward to hearing from you!
Very cool - mirrors what I’ve been thinking of doing, which is fantastic as it gives me something to show the spousal unit and see if he likes it. And absolutely, would love to see more like this from you - the key for me, at least, is that I watch what you are enjoying and passionate about. If you wanna go back into setups? Cool!
🏅You learned the HARD WAY that crayfish (yabbies) are the #1 BEST escape artists from an aquarium! Forget having an open tank! I learned that lesson, too, with my pet crayfish, "Shee-ra"... multiple times😂! Shee-ra was about 7 inches long the last time she escaped and nearly scared me TO DEATH to see a GIANT INSECT crawling across my living room floor! I love your natural tank! I'm trying to do a similar thing because I'm a houseplant fanatic, but I haven't figured out the means to hold up the plants attractively. Your tank has given me some great ideas! Awesome job!
Wow I love this tank a lot, and I'm not a fan of big tanks. I like that you chose small fish to keep in it and the natural setup of it. It looks so natural it's incredible! The low maintenance is a good sign of a working habitat 🙌 congrats
I think it's interesting, I never thought there might be people who don't have the min focus of the hobby being the home tanks. It didn't really hit me until you said how little experience you have with that aspect, but you really are coming at the hobby from a breeder's perspective. It's so neat how much room there is for different experiences in the hobby! Love your setup.
Im away for 3 or 4 months once a year. Have $30 camera connected to home Wi-Fi aimed at my tanks from about 3 feet away. Neighbor tops off once every week or two and my sister does partial water change /water testing everyday 5 weeks or so. Auto feeders x 2 with just the right amt of food. This has worked great for 3 years. I set my phone alarm to watch fish feed twice a day and make sure lighting is correct. Camera has been helpful for me to resolve small issues as they arise. Get a camera! 😊
Loving your videos man. I randomly stumbled across your videos about a month ago & didn’t even have a fish tank at the time. Fast forward to now & I’ve got 4 tanks with 1 on the way 😂 Currently half way through doing a 4 tier Bunnings shelving unit with scattered tanks & want to do a house plant feature essentially taking over the shelving rack & used as a filtration system for the tanks as well. Has been a great little project so far, so any other videos like this would be awesome ✌️ Keep up the good work mate 👍
Natural is the way to go! River wood, rocks, sand, lil river water for bacteria, pothos and philo at top. Lol this is my latest project, tho I am using a LED light from amazon, only $50 for a 36" tank.
I love how honest you are - just found your videos. Just set up my first new fresh water tank. Here in the Blue Mountains in NSW - guessing I might need a heater before putting fish in?? Oh I'm also a modern artist - I base most of my art on the colours of fish! Be interesting to see if one of my more aqua paintings would work behind one of your tanks?? xxx
I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos. This one is great, since I don’t breed/sell aquarium fauna. I didn’t know there’s a healthy way to avoid water changes and also maintain such a complex environment.
I loved seeing you set this tank up. Reminds me of MJ Aquascaping. It would be cool to see you set up a massive tank in the shop with “breeders choice” in the tank. Your favorite plants and fish in the aquarium to show which ones are the best for there hobby
I setup my first fresh water tank a couple of years ago, i always had saltwater tanks previously. I had terrible issues with hair algae for ages and ages no matter what i did i couldn't get rid of it. I actually decided after seeing what you'd done at the shop and MD has done with almost all of his tanks. I added a terrestrial plant out of the top a philodendron which is what was available at the time. Within a few weeks i had no more hair algae i obviously had a nutrient imbalance but tests werent showing it. It's the best thing ive ever done not only do i change less water i have minimal algae no more hair algae and the tank is thriving. So if your a beginner and you want to future proof yourself add a house plant i also have cherry shrimp thriving in a tank that they should get picked off in.
This technique works very well. Did it thirty or so years ago with philodendrons. Discus loved that tank. Bred and raised babies in there. Sucks the nitrates out pretty well.
I was told that if you keep trimming the tall bits of the lotus 🪷 plant it will learn that you want it to stay short and I did it with %100 success. Now that's if you don't want the tall bits to reach the surface of the water witch I did not. It stayed shorter and kinda bushy. House plants look amazing Nick..👍🏼👍🏼
I pinched a small piece of Spanish moss at Disneyland a couple weeks back, put it in our backpack and forgot about it for a couple days. When I remembered, it was looking pretty pathetic. I soaked in in one of my tanks for a few minutes, hung in on the tank rack, and it looks like it's going to be just fine. Moral: soak your and give them another shot before you toss them in the bin. MTC Cheers, Nick! ~Ron
I’ve got a side mount filter with 3 large yabbies in a 20ltr tank. I caught them super small and watched them grow. The will be getting an upgrade in the next few months to give them more space. Aluminium paneling with led lights attached to the underside is the way to stop them from getting out
I have a tank with a single mystery snail in it who has not only managed to eat every single aquatic plant in the tank but also the roots of about 6 houseplants I have on top. Absolute menace. I feed him well and often so I think he’s just an evil soul
May sound quite random but bloodfin glass tetras would look absolutely stunning in that tank! they're quite interesting and are super active fellows, i keep them myself and they behave a lot like some cold water cyprinids like Bleak! also personal bias since i keep a school of them other than that this tank is absolutely stunning
One of my tanks has a bunch of plants growing out of the top and the problem I’m running into is that the lights are burning some of my plants and I can’t find a bracket that is high enough above the tank to stop this from happening! I love this idea! I can hang a branch from the ceiling and drill the lights in! This is a great idea!! I also never thought flood lights would be adequate for growing plants. I’m going to try this! ❤
Great video bro the tank is wonderful I think i will have one of these in my sitting room you should and some gunk from the creek to finish the ecosystem.
Looks great! Have you considered setting up a Walstead method tank? I have a 52 litre setup and it is freaking awesome. No need to feed the plants, clean the substrate or play around with PH or Kh. Just the occasional water top up. Mimicing what Nature does has changed my whole mindset with Fish keeping. Currently negotiating a space in the lounge room for a 4 or 6' Aquarium with the War Office..... Wish me luck😆
This video was great. I'd love to see you do more aquarium set ups, ideally community ones with fish you have bred yourself so you know what is compatible and what environment they suit best. I love the breeding videos and the store videos but apart from shrimp I've no plans to bred fish myself, I guess I'm the ideal fish shop customer! Your videos are great, cheers.
because you set it up at the start with that northbrook creek theme, you should keep that theme going with the fish aswell so maybe you could add some crimsonpotted rainbows (from northbrook creek if you want or some glass fish or some northbrook creek purple spotted gudgeons (northbrook creek is only a 30 minute drive from where i live and ive been going there for 5 years+ and i have some purple spotted gudgeons from northbrook creek breeding in my tank and i will more than happily sell you some young fry once they grow) i also collected some crimson spot rainbow fish from northbrook creek but they have not yet spawned
Something I forgot to mention is I love paladariums and not big on tank stands as they're a waste of space Tank on the floor build up the wall n sides giving more surface area for plants and waterfalls. Great update! I have a houseplant question I've found no answers for online, even in hydroponic forums; has anyone done a mandevilla to a planted tank?!
How did you get rid of the algae? I have a tank with house plants on top and a lot of plants inside, its just about 2 months old. And i can't seem te get rid of the dark green algae on my substrate. Do you have any tips? Btw i have a small shrimp tank thats been taking of, is it possible to put some of the shrimp in my big tank without them being eaten bij a gourami? I think they would help with the algae problem aswell

It's the same thing with gardening!
What's the dimensions of the tank?

This is what all new fishkeepers should be shown

I love this tank. This is exactly the kind of tank I'm thinking of for my first tank.
Very nice. Yes please, more of this. 👌

Great tank. Would love to see more of these simple but beautiful setups.

Would love to see updates on this and more content like this!

It looks amazing
greate Idee with the egg crate in the back

Excellent with the plants Nick
I love the driftwood on top for the plants to grow on. Great idea! I would like to try that. Mine are crawling up the wall.

other than that this tank is absolutely stunning
Sadly, my cat will not allow me to have any aquarium top plants. But the tanks are all full of plants safely under water. Yours looks lovely.
Was caught completely off guard by the f bomb 😆cool idea with the log over the tank, I might try it on a couple of mine
One of my tanks has a bunch of plants growing out of the top and the problem I’m running into is that the lights are burning some of my plants and I can’t find a bracket that is high enough above the tank to stop this from happening! Cool tank !!! Do more of these projects
Great video bro the tank is wonderful I think i will have one of these in my sitting room you should and some gunk from the creek to finish the ecosystem.
Love this tank. Inspired, thank you. I would love to know your thoughts on dirted tanks/no filter setups.
Your videos are great, cheers.
got the idea of using pothos thanks
because you set it up at the start with that northbrook creek theme, you should keep that theme going with the fish aswell so maybe you could add some crimsonpotted rainbows (from northbrook creek if you want or some glass fish or some northbrook creek purple spotted gudgeons (northbrook creek is only a 30 minute drive from where i live and ive been going there for 5 years+ and i have some purple spotted gudgeons from northbrook creek breeding in my tank and i will more than happily sell you some young fry once they grow) i also collected some crimson spot rainbow fish from northbrook creek but they have not yet spawned
Amazing job sir ❤
The tank is awesome. More set up videos would be cool.
I like the video style bro, keep it up
I love the tank.
Looks beautiful!
I have such a crush on this guy its unreal 😭
Great vid. Got some good chat in it haha
WOW the time difference in Texas and Australia is really drastic !
in Texas it's only been like 6 days when you set this up .....
Something I forgot to mention is I love paladariums and not big on tank stands as they're a waste of space
Tank on the floor build up the wall n sides giving more surface area for plants and waterfalls.
Great way to grow food outside not knowing how bad GMOS are down under.
Placement by window can help with the plants and a bigger tank would be cool. Later mate, 🤘😆🤘
Well done
This tank makes me want some luminatus for sure.
Please add rams they wool look stunning in this setup ❤
amazing tank, mate
Very nice Idea, perfect aquatic ecosystem. Isnt dangerous for the glass to have so many heavy stones on the back site?
If you watch the set up video you’ll see most of the stones aren’t touching the back glass, they left a gap and filled it with sand to create a flat base to stack more stones on top
I'd like to see more tank set ups 👍
Fire vid, alr finished it.
Thanks for all the continued sharing! Out of curiosity would you know the parameters of your water in that tank? Would be very interesting to know see how my Barcelona (Spain) water would work.
I have some nano tanks that look like that. If I redo them I'm going to build something just like you have
Nice Tank mate but more importantly, when are you going to have the forktails back in stock. Love those little guys
More tank stuff please. 👍
Yabbies always escape, it’s hard to keep them contained tbh haha.. but also I’ve heard that they escape due to overcrowding in the tank
Great update! I have a houseplant question I've found no answers for online, even in hydroponic forums; has anyone done a mandevilla to a planted tank?!
I am going to have to copy this set up. How do you go setting up the power leads for the flood lights? Have you done any videos on cable management?
That hydro shop sounds like where I went to get my Dr greenthumbs compost for the substrate.
Was it in Capalaba?
What did you use for the substrate? Plants are loving it.
