I put black electric tape across my pole piece pickups lol it also makes the black pickups look cool like EMG I keep my pickups as close as possible and you get more boost
I actually have my strings resting just above my pickups and frets but enough where there’s no buzzing. I always play over my pickups since I’m slowly switching to finger plucking and it’s nice because I can always feel where I am and I can kind of glide my fingers and play. It helps that they’re big soap bars. Helps me from playing harder than necessary too.

Billy Shehan's 3 finger tecnique as well as Alex Webster any Bass Player that had played with Nile like Brad Parris and Tom Araya of Slayer and of course the late Lemmy Kilminster of Motorhead. Gene Simmons of KISS Steve Harris of Iron Maiden and of course Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath there are others Steve DiGiorgio of Testament the late Scott Clendenin of Death. Since I'm just learning to play and I also own both a 4 string and a 5 sting on the 5 string the strings are closer together so tjat makes playing it much easier in terms of not getting your fingers in between the strings I think learning this 3 finger technique from the begining with give me less of a hard time to learn to play with it the right way thanks for the lesson \m/A\m/
Hi Rodney. The tip of the raised pickup for the ramp is interesting. Does this affect to the signal of the pickup? Does it more boomy? I have a Lace Sensor Man O War in a Fender Precision and will try it, but I tend to be agressive attacking with fingers. Congratulations for the channel, you do a very helpful videos and tips!!! Hey Peter, thanks for checking it out. On my show metal bass Monday, I'll be talking a little bit more about exercises on three finger and fretting approach, you may pick up a few more tips there. As far as the pickup, yes, adjusting it will have an effect on your tone. Here's a way to solve that. If you really prefer that the pickup be lower then right up against the strings, what I've done a few times is just get some flat plastic blank pickguard material. Cut two shapes the same size as your pickup, and use double stick tape to attach them to the top of the pickup. It won't interfere with the signal, but will effectively make your pickup thicker allowing you to still use it as a ramp but position it lower.If I can make a small recommendation, if you are going for a lot of speed, at some point you will have to lighten up on your attack. If you're really aggressive and plucking you'll be working against yourself. Kind of like running a marathon while stomping your feet into the ground as hard as you can! Very usefull thanks! My p bass already has plastic covers on its pole pieces similar to yours. I cant seem to raise the pickup high enough to use it as a ramp. Would putting some foam underneath the pickup work instead of epoxying? And again, thanks for the usefull explanation!
Adding some foam would definitely do the trick, you may also need to get longer screws as well. It's a pretty easy fix. Thanks for watching, I hope it works out for you
Nice Video Rodney. In one of Billies videos he also give's some advices for off bass finger exercises . For examples, he always plays with his "Balls".... nooo not those balls ;) , but these chinese balls you can get nearly in every asia shop :)
I remember that. I was never able to see an exercise with them that would actually pay off. I wonder if Billy just owns stock in a factory that makes them?🤔😂
@@RodneyMcG well i guess the goal is just to keep your finger rolling. If it pay off? Good question. I think its better playing with those balls than doing nothing at all. Good when you somewhere and don't have your bass with you. Sure, it does not replace a real practice with your bass 😉
Hey man. Thanks for the info about raising the height of the pick ups. Just curious, though. My bass has J-Style pick ups, so would raising the one I play over yield the same results as you demonstrate with P-bass style pick ups since I can't offset them like you to mimic that neck radius? Thanks for the info
I can understand that. It took some practice for me to get completely comfortable with. I think you could get it with time. I have a video here on my channel that covers it step by step if you want to try it out. I used to be really against the pick thing, but it's not important. There are many bassists that use a pick. The music is the real goal. Do what works for, and sounds like you!
Rodney McG , thanks for the in-depth analysis of bass player mechanics! I am hammering away at Alex Webster’s book, “Extreme Metal Bass”. My gallop technique leading with the 1st finger of the right hand is pathetic. My plan is to keep at it slowly with the metronome until it gets better. Your idea of practicing scales with two finger plucking using only middle and ring fingers will probably help. That’s the weak area and playing like that is awkward for me. As a bassist, I struggle with the 3 finger technique. To be honest, I can do way better with a pick. However....that is not very bassist-like, is it!
