I have listened to many of Dr. Smith's videos, and this one captured my attention more than any other so far. I hope that the following notes will be helpful as you listen.

I understand that Martin Luther was not fond of James, because it does not focus on the doctrine of salvation by faith. Nevertheless, it does address issues of innate sin, and behavior among believers. And Dr. Smith's teaching is very valuable, especially the explanation of the process of sin. I plan to review it regularly.

    Three prescriptions:

    1. I have to understand what I am responsible for, and what I am not responsible for.

    2. Be careful about how you speak.

    3. Be very careful about making class distinctions among believers.
Three Issues: Trials, Temptations, Taking Responsibility.

    1. God is often behind my troubles, teaching me endurance.

Myth: If I follow God, my life will be easier.
Myth: God is interested in making my life easier.
    Myth: Easier is better.
Myth: If God is in the plan, it will work more easily.
Myth: The only way to show tenderness is to provide comfort and to guard against anything that would cause pain. (The Mommy Myth.) God is your heavenly Father, not your heavenly Mother.

    2. When troubles come, I seek to escape, not to become stronger. Trouble is part of the need of your life if you are going to be enduring in a fallen world.
If God brings trouble into your life, it is to build you, not to break you.

    3. V 1.5: Patience in trouble: you can ask God for wisdom about trouble that you are enduring. Don't run from trouble; run to God. "Use your lifeline."

    4. Do not doubt that God is good - that is part of His character.

    5. Some things are out of your control. Do right in order to honor God, not to expect earthly reward and recognition.

    6. Some things will make sense only after your reach the next life. Look past this life.

    7. V 1.13: God may place weight into your life, but He will never place bait. (Temptation does not come from God.)
All GOOD gifts come from the Father.
    8. The conscience exists in the fallen person, just as the Old Man exists in the now spiritually alive person.

    9. Sin is not an instantaneous event; it is a process. You will never defeat sin until you understand the process of sin.

    10. The purpose of sin is to kill your walk with God.

    11. Guilt is the weed in the garden of innocence.

    12. Sin is a sneaky process. We compare ourselves to the standards of our neighbors, not to the standards of God.

    13. It begins as a thought. Then we nurture it, let it develop and grow until it has the power to overcome us.

    14. God's nature is always good. He does not send evil, the purpose of which is to kill our relationship with God. He does not desire to take away from our relationship with Him.

    15. We are the first part of creation to be redeemed; then, the rest of creation will be redeemed.

    16. God deliberately planted the seed of another growth process within us - the hunger to know God.

    17. Take responsibility to overcome temptation. Slow down your response.

    18. One of the great tools of the enemy is to bring on life so quickly that you can't get equilibrium (maintain balance). When you encounter several trials at the same time, you know that the enemy is at work. (If it's not one thing, it's another. Or both. Or several.) Job 1 is a picture of the enemy pummeling someone. Temptation comes from within. Attacks come from without.
    19. Be quick to hear. Be slow to speak, slow to anger. Investigate the problem thoroughly before you try to create an answer.

    20. The Word implanted within you is your defense against attacks. Act on the whole truth, not on half-truths.

    21. Anger involves my ego, leads to revenge. Revenge involves my ego. Revenge does not belong to me - it belongs to God. Beware of righteous indignation.
    Hurting for someone else is
appropriate for a believer; revenge is not.

    22. Whichever seeds are watered, those are the seeds which will grow. "This Book will keep you from sin, and sin will keep you from this book."

    23. Bridling your tongue is a personal discipline, not a gift of the Holy Spirit.

    24. Do the right things, for the right reasons.

I always believed and still do that Mary&Joseph had the other children after Jesus was born, Jesus being the oldest child.

I agree - one of the new testament books - Matthew I believe, said that Joseph did not consumate the marriage until after the birth of Jesus.

35:00 is HUGE. I can publicly confess, most of my sins were willing accepted or even created in my mind before the opportunity was an option. If we say ‘the devil made me do it’, we accept & proclaim that we are owned by Satan. In a way, we are denying the power of God to pull us and protect us and we shouldn’t be surprised when we’re in the prison we created by confessing the prison bars are too strong and we no longer try to escape them.

I thought Jesus’ brothers were considered half-brothers because Mary was their mother but only Jesus was God’s Son, not Joseph’s son.

Yeah - that was a new one on me....doesn't stack up in my opinion. If Joseph had older kids why didn't they trek to Egypt with the "fam"? No scriptural record of tag-along 1/2 siblings.

I though Mary had more kids.

The theory that Joseph had other children before Mary is just one theory. The problem with that is why were these children not with them when they went to Bethlehem for the census? I believe that Mary and Joseph were a good Jewish couple, and God’s instruction to multiply was taken seriously. What is important though, is the Bible is very clear, they did not consummate their relationship until after Jesus was born.

I am trying to listen carefully to this video and take notes, and an LDS missionary (Elder Somebody) keeps calling me. I am not answering, but I am praying for the guy. :)

Oh wow thank you so very much for this Bible study. I assumed the reason Jesus was called their half brother was because Joseph was not His father, God is Jesus’s father. So all of His siblings would be half siblings.

So, at minute 0:14, why would James' ministry be called the Jerusalem church? And is there any documentation on how many attendees attended and where they met? I have many questions about the early community.
