I highly suggest for everyone to watch these authentic camera reviews if they are really concerned in the camera department of a phone, rather than those of tech youtubers. I mean, these types of reviews are more in depth, more critical and unbiased. I am happy to have come across your channel, sir Robin Wong. I hope to see more videos like this.
Great review Robin! Such detailed and pleasant content brother. RUclips recommended your video after purchasing my Note 20 ultra. I'm a casual photographer but must say, this device rocks! Take care and lots of love from the 🇺🇸!!!
5:30 thank you so much for addressing this and I was confused for so long. I've had this phone since release and never figured out why it was doing this and why I couldn't find this info anywhere.
Thanks for this review. Up front, I am old, and admittedly have an issue when it comes to phone photographs. With that disclaimer, the point that I wish to make is this. I think there are diminished expectations among the general public now, with so many images on Instagram or Flickr or whatever, of what is acceptable IQ when it comes to photographic quality, especially since images now are viewed online on phones, tablets, or laptop computers that are incapable of the same rendering quality as digital cameras. My own standard for my cameras (I don't do phone shots) is how far can I push the ISO and still get a shot that I would be happy with printed at 13X19. Most phone images can't touch that, regardless of how good they look on some screen, although I have to admit that they are getting better and better all the time. The other issue I don't understand is the lenses. A 26-28mm (FF=) is "normal", and a 50mm (FF=) lens is "telephoto". Really? Digital zoom doesn't count. Call me old school; I'll take that as a compliment.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It is true - for most people who are not crazy about photography - smartphone cameras do suffice. I do have to point out something though, when Samsung mentioned telephoto - it was an equivalent of 120mm periscope design lens, not just 50mm, and to me anything longer than 100mm is considered telephoto. Anything between 50-100mm to me is "medium telephoto". If that makes sense!
@@robinwong I have the Samsung Note 20 Ultra, and I was very impressed with the Telephoto, I could actually capture a photo of the moon, and not just some white circular sphere, I mean, the actual moon with some details!!
Its 29 January 2021, And I intend to buy Note 20 Ultra maybe today, after searching and doing some research, watching Tech reviews, i came across this video, Thx you sir for making this video, really helps me.
This is the best camera review of a phone for photographers I have ever seen. You covered all the important questions that other reviewers miss. Very helpful! I would love to see you also review the Sony Xperia 1 II, which appears to be designed for photographers. Other reviewers didn't really test the Pro camera apps included there and only get average results, of course.
You're a brave man Robin.... a photography website person reviewing a cellphone... If it wasn't you, I would not have watched it to be honest.... cellphones are killing "real" photography... easy to prove... check the number of cellphones vs "real cameras" for the last 3 years.... I won't argue cellphone cameras are "always handy" where you have to lug a camera around, but picture quality and bokeh tell the fine details. Micro 4/3rds cameras are small enough to carry around with you if you are a picture quality enthusiast.... Just my take on it.....
Thanks. The main reason I am working hard on this channel - photography, and photography only. As you have probably seen from the video, I have shot tonnes of images, and I have a lot more to show if I wanted to drag on the time. The gear (smartphone or dedicated camera) is a tool, and what I want to do here is to spread the joy of shooting - the process of making images!
The N20U is definitely a good camera for most of the situations... But something I noticed as I take lots of object pictures in studio: my older N8 was better for this particular role, it could capture more details and less blur at objects close up (not macro) than the N20U... to conclude: for my typical use, N8 is still among the best cameras I had, better than N20U.
Wow great job love your enthusiasm and professionalism on actual picture quality review of the Note ultra. Much more intuitive than other reviews. I've taken some amazing shots with the 108mp and of course the wide angle.... only when necessary. I am not a fan of artificial processing ( google pixel etc). I like using the pro mode and Raw images which I can edit as needed. Thank you for also sharing the settings you used to capture the images as well. Oh....and NO SELFIES!!!! lol 😆.
Thanks for the review, Robin, it's a nice device, but still not enough for more demanding scenarios. Skipping it, will invest in 100-400 lens, most likely from Olympus - same price as the Note 20 Ultra here in Bulgaria
Very good review. I always wondered about the symbols on the camera when opened. I also knew the cameras that were on the phone, but not there location. You answered those questions for me.
Hi Robin. I really like this review. You put away the very heavy commercial feel of a smartphone camera and also clear out many misconception of the public. As a photographer, I do wonder how is the quality and practical usage 108MP, especially the size of the image file? But is ok, I actually not fancy a phone with 108MP, while even my DSLR just having 12MP. Just a case of wonder. Anyway, good review! Keep it Up!
Hi Robin, thank you for the review. Why no .dng image samples? IMHO, over-processed mobile jpegs are not what you expect to get from a photographer's tool. =)
Would be great if you could do a camera review of the upcoming iPhone 12 pro max with that sensor shift stabilisation in the main camera. Great review btw👍👍👍
Very great camera review for the phone! Do you have the Exynos or Snapdragon version of the Note 20 Ultra? They are built differently so that might be the reason for the camera display lag issue, but other than that it might be a software issue
I am that amateur photographer who uses one lense to shoot everything lol... but photography is just a hobby for me, and I do it to capture moments, not always to capture award winning shots. Great video. I'm thinking of getting this phone. I think it's camera set up could replace my Canon SX410 bridge camera for my lake photography.
Thanks, you explained why my telephoto close-ups were soon drastically bad. For Ultra Wide shots, I find the results to be better to use the Main Camera (which is very wide angle anyways) and shoot in panoramic mode.
That was very valuable information i hope samsung pay attention to that i agree with you i was a note 10 plus user and I'm a kind disappointed for the note 20 ultra camera performance when it comes to the focusing and vedio recording i only find it fine when I'm recording with 1080p .
Any way do do this with new Sony 1iii . Also could do a video on set up for dummieslike me to take good phone photos, macros and everyday. Thanks great work
Thanks for pointing that out, I was completely unaware of Huawei's latest offerings, but then again with the current US-China drama and no direct access to Google Playstore, Huawei is falling out of radar for most people here.
I'm using pro max and note 20 ultra myself, I can notice the big different in camera experience and I would said I don't really like the shutter lag from my note 20 ultra.
The shutter lag is not the biggest problem for me. My issue was with the display lag, even before you AF or press the shutter button, you already have a significant delay!
Spot on review, pls do a review on the samsung s21 ultra and the Sony xperia 1 iii. It will be good to see your perspective on these cameras too. Thanks and this is a really useful content.
Obviously they have set it on the best settings where we get factory set settings and dont know how to get what your getting. Ive owned this phone for 2 years now and honestly its camera is the same to me as any cheap camera. Yes ive tried all the tutorials for settings but will never buy a phone for camera quality again
There's no point using tele lense or wide lense in night scene unless it has very good source of lights. I agree everything you said and no doubt but average consumer won't even notice those i would say 'micro lacking' i myself as an active point shooters would definitely had hard time too as per described lacks. The only almost perfect smartphone is iphone are excellent(maybe) but the thing is battery life is a drawback
Even with this Tool, you got some great images! I’m a sucker for your kitty cat pix in the city! Hypothetically, would an app, like Gigapixel AI, help captures from smartphones? Still a good case is made for a separate tool for serious photos, if one wants to invest in both. Are these newer phone kits getting bigger and evolving toward needing a carry bag too? 😆
With ( s ) a good camera who need to carry big expensive heavy camera ? Just good camera with a good angle ! I cant imagine imagine what's next shooting the moon?
Hello. Great review. Thanks for it. Question: why "we don't need the selfie camera"? By the othe hand, I prefer a real camera. Cameras last forever and are more versatile. If I buy a phone like that is for its phone features, not the camera. That phone costs US$1,200.00 and will last approximately 2 years. With that money I prefer an e-M10 iv which will last forever and a US$200-$300 phone which have a decent camera for "emergencies".
@@robinwong But sometimes selfies are good for example when one is on vacation and want a picture with a landmark etc. in the background... A phone or a camera like the Nikon A900, Lumix ZS70, or similar can help.

I think it's yours only that laging.. cause I try mine it doesn't lag as like you show in your video..but the rest review it's awesome and accurate opinion
Why do you say we don't need the selfie camera? I'm curious because half my pictures - and most family/friend photos are taken this way - and I currently have a much higher MP selfie camera....
I tested my Note 20 Ultra and I do NOT have that lag that you showed in the video. You can turn on FPS in developers setting so show what refresh rate it is doing live. It shows 120 for most, goes down to 60 and even 48 when watching RUclips. But in camera, I get 60. And tried the same test where you wave your hand slowly down in front of camera and it stays at 60 amd I don't get that lag that you are experiencing. I am on latest official One UI 3.0, but even when I was on beta 3.0, I was getting same results. Mine is US unlocked Note 20 Ultra with Snapdragon processor.
