Was wondering why you struggled with the key so much 🤣 now it makes sense
It is interesting to see how it is done in the land of the rose. In Sweden we do not have that type of cable at all and most certainly do not run them in walls and ceilings hidden. When in a wall we usually use pipes or flexpipe and FQ cable which is a single cable for phase, neutral and earth etc. That way you can always put on the fishing hat and fish them out of the pipe if need be.
Best regards from Sweden :)
Loft work is the devils house. It’s grim.
On a serious note though, a lone electrician (or any lone worker actually) needs to take extra care. A friend of mine fell awkwardly in a loft and dislocated his shoulder. Unable to get up and out of reach of his phone, he laid there until the customer came home from work, several hours later.
You could’ve brought the cables for the fan isolator down in the bathroom and brought them back entry into a surface box (or with careful cutting, into a flush one)
The bathroom walls are being plastered so it needn’t have looked pretty on that side.
I always put the fan isolator in the loft if a inline fan. It’s only for isolation so having it near the fan makes sense and saves chasing. 👍🏻
And stops the tenants switching it off - which they always do!
When I was in the trade many years ago, I always clipped cables in lofts, and never ran cables across the voids, thereby avoiding making trip hazards trip hazards. One uses a fair bit more cable, but I reckon it’s the right way to do the job. After a few years, cables can be hard to spot when they get coated in dust. Personally, I would have recommended a complete rewire; tracing all that rubbish work is a pain.
Agreed. Very time consuming all the track and trace facade 🤦♂️
I have been guilty myself of committing to establishing the previous mind so to speak. It becomes a vendetta sometimes.
A complete rewire you never know whats hidden plus always clip cables .Dont do the job unless they commit to a full rewire.
Absolutely, average sparks leave hidden wires all over the place. One of my main considerations when viewing an instillation. What sort of job was done on the unseen.
Labeling stuff is clearly underrated. I'm not a spark but do electrical stuff within my capability. I label everything, write on the t&e, Sharpie on junction boxes if I have to use them, label maker too. Because the next fool who's going to have to figure out what the hell is going on is likely to be me.
Would be nice to see labeling to some level becoming the standard best practice in domestic wiring. It's done on consumer units so why not elsewhere on junctions?
Plan C for the fan isolation switch: you could have gone down through the bathroom ceiling and through the wall above the lintel right where the isolation switch should be. Put the cable conceiled in the bathroom and a surface box for the switch.
With the mess in the loft. It would be a great idea going forward if sparks would write down what they did and leave the notes with the eicr so you wouldn't have to waste so much time being a detective 😆😆😆
It's always one of the greatest challenges on a job like this, trying to figure out what the previous guy was thinking (or not as the case may be).
Another quality video Jordan. Congratulations on the big 20k 👏👏👏
Thanks! 👍
Years of alterations all done without any care. Nice to see it tidied up. Looked like that bathroom light switch had no earth to the back box.
To think I wanted to train as an electrician some 50 years ago or more. Life was different than for electricians. I stand in admiration of your problem-solving skills, Thank you for taking us through the process. I am glad I trained as a builder instead.
Super helpful video as always. I’m enrolling on a domestic electrical course soon and watching your videos is boosting my understanding and confidence so much, can’t wait to get started 😊
Congratulations on the 20k top quality video Jordan looking forward to the next one
Thanks!
Absolutely loved how you showed us everything really helpful well done buddy
Awesome thanks!
Well done for hitting 20K 👍😁. As for the wiring the box with the blank plate was probably a spark making safe the original wiring and moving the centre light from the original bathroom and the cable that went to the wall and came back was probably the original 230V fan on the wall. The rest was probably done by the DIYer not wanting to pay for the spark to come back and wire the new bathroom 😂. Great vids as always keep them up 👍😁. P.S. i hate lofts to.. especially in the summer! 😕
Congratulations on 20k your smashing the vids at the min
"We were supposed to be doing the bare minimum" - a familiar cry to anyone who rents or has worked for a landlord...
go away Siri..
OK
🤣
They killed Alexa because she knew too much....
LOL
so good to see someone else have a case of cable ocd , those switches would get to me too
I can only imagine that up until a few years ago that this house was a family home and probably a fairly nice one if it was kept immaculately. Unfortunately, it now seems to be the victim of a HMO and apart from the new en-suites, not one that’ll look too nice - I maybe wrong when it’s finished.
I do hope that the polystyrene tiles will be removed before the over-boarding as otherwise I’d still see them as a risk.
I couldn’t agree more with the starting again when it comes to spaghetti junction of junction boxes as the only thing that’s nicer to see than such a mess that works without any problems is a neat and simplified set of cables and Wago boxes that works without any problems.
Happy to see more.
Boy was that a mess! You can see people have been up there in "make it work and get out of here asap" mode rather than doing a fair job on it. I think it should be general practice to tape all feed/in out wires together a couple of times because it helps the brain make sense of the general mess quicker by removing two obstacles straight away when you have six cables tracking into one junction.
Congratulations on the 20K ................... and I am so happy I do not do loft space wiring anymore :)
Yeah you lucky thing!
Great job. For your fan iso it might be easier to poke the cable up rather than find the hole under the insulation
Fascinating as always (and I'm not even an electrician)!
Must admit though, I would be worried if I saw that in my loft!
Hi Jordan, another great video. In my oppinion, any spark who cuts off the CPC is not a spark at all, but a DIYer. If it was me I would
have left the cpc in, terminated it in a wago and left it in the back of the box. You never know when you might need it in the future.
It is all about thinking of the next electrician who might come in. Please can we all start thinking about the other trades and do anything
we can to make their lives easier. ( If only the plasterers didn't keep troweling plaster into the back boxes, wouldn't that be nice. )
Yes we all get a house of horrors from time to time . Worst bit is tracing out the cables . 👍👍
Looks like you've earned the 20k bragging rights
HAHA thanks
Firstly, congratz on 20k
Second, just put a patress flush to the ceiling for the iso ^^
HI Jordan, Old spark from the 1960's. Another great video, I like the way you don't cut and jump almost in real time and explain as you try to figure out the runs, spent many an happy hour in the lofts but with no masks goggles or any protection, very difficult working on your own without anyone just tapping the ceiling at switches/lights you can get a little disorientated in the loft. It would be nice to see the job completed through the various stages,. Once again an excellent video and well done reaching your target.
Thanks!
That gaff looks like it could do with a rewire to be honest
Prob the worst job about being a sparky, the loft! I work in Queensland Australia and it gets stupid hot up there. Mix sweat and insulation together. Nice!
Now I have a new name for electricians, thanks from the U.S.
For that upstairs bathroom, the more sensible way to turn it into an en-suite (if they had wanted) would be to move the bedroom door forward to be in line with the corridor wall. Less work than knocking down the wall.
It's a bit of a shame that they're gonna block up the window, instead of putting in a solid frosted window so you'd still have daylight in the shower.
I'm a great believer in rip it out and start again. I tell clients it will cost more to waste time trying to fathom out someone elses bodge.
What a nice front door way area.
Nice job Thanks ❤❤❤❤❤
Hi, really enjoy your videos. Did you do a video for the board change? Have you place the legs of the circuits into DIN rail connectors in the enclosure? I have considered doing this myself but have never taken the plunge. Would love to see how you did it.
Yeah i did a video about it, wasn’t my proudest job to be honest but you can check it out
Congratulations on 20k
Thanks!
If you had a neutral fault on all sockets (using just a check plug), would you assume a loose neutral in the board? Or something else?
Go away siri...ok lol love it
Haha
Bring cable for fan isolation down other side of door in the stud
I'm surprised that you don't use tracer/detector tools to locate a wire termination... For Ethernet cabling, it's a must...
I know this is late to the party, but a re-wire would be in order. What a mess up there. Ugh. You will need a pint after this. 🍺
Intresting that you have done a HMO I have a question for you I did one a few months ago the landlord sent the EICR to the council, he then got an email from her telling him I did not know what I was doing. That was because there was a room I could not get into so in the comments I put NV she told the landlord that there is no coding of NV so I told her to look on pages 3 & 4 am wating to see if there is any more comments from her. How would you of coded it?
In this situation you charge the client for the time or for the units? Thanks 👍🏻 and really helpful video
I'm surprised you do not have to clip the cables in the loft, as we do in Australia.
did you clip the cables in ,when you were in the loft-or just left them were they fall ;
here in Chile we can't put a light or a fan (nothing electric) nowhere near a shower. that's a disaster waiting to happen.
6:55 Does the door not have a header? I'm not too familiar with construction, I just know in my house I could never fit a switch or enclosure that close above a door frame.
I like to just grab a sharpie and label each cable with where it's going! Nothing more helpful for the next guy - or you the next time round! Bit of tape with sharpie marks if it's singles.
The house doesn't look anywhere near as bad as the hovel my ex used to rent in Reading. I think it was let out as a domestic property but in reality that 3-bed terraced had four students living there, sub-letting one room each and one officially renting the whole house. I didn't look at the electrics too closely but I couldn't help but notice a broken switch and some haphazardly clipped T&E in the kitchen. The CU was new-ish (plastic but dual RCD), probably the best bit of the whole lot. The lounge (now bedroom) had the gas meter in it and always slightly smelled of gas, unless the smell of damp got bad enough to cover up the gas. The stairs were so badly cobbled together that I was slightly scared of going up and the kitchen... what an amazing mess! The tiles were waaaaayyy off (some bits had the horizontal joints about a quarter tile height off), the bathroom door was almost falling off into the kitchen, the back door had rot holes in it, etc. The only recent modernisation was a bunch of fire doors because someone had figured out they were required after the loft had been converted. The old doors had been set outside the back door and left to rot.
Odd question but are yours safety trainers. If so which brand/ model. Ta
Min 39:30 to 39:45 ~ if you install 2 wall lights, one either side of the mirror above the sink/wash basin you'll provide much more even light for shaving (male) or make-up (female); rather than an overhead ceiling light.
one thing i have noticed in both sides of the pound tht shitty bodgy wiring in the attic looks the same if it where not for the cable insulation and jbox differences swear i was watching from a job in hometown
Long arm Thumb up! Cheer!
what happened to the house? and how did it flood?
Weldone.
Thanks
In the attic I'd rip the lop out and start again, everything except the and only the exhaust fan unit.
Then do it for free!!!!
Money doesn't grow on trees.
I always recommend the CHEAPEST safely adequate route .
damit 2nd well done on the 20k jordan
Thanks!
I don't mind dust, insulation and heat. Working in lofts is a nightmare if you're an arachnophobe, trust me. Sweating on things is the least of your worries.. Plenty of light is the best solution.
Did you win the race did Nick eat humble pie🤣🤣
YEAH!
I feel for you in the loft I spent all summer in the states in my loft doing this but the heat was insane 55c plus.... and masses of insulation. I used the board trick as well but unfortunately after being so good at maneuvering around the attic I went through and I am having to do a small level 5 skim and drywall ceiling repair patch. At least I am practicing my skimming. I have said this before attic work is a younger person job that’s where an apprentice is very useful and it’s a great skill and practice regarding circuit identification. Do you poke rods from down below or from top to map it all out if it gets too confusing? The fan motor location helped I guessed. USA NEC2020 code requires us to place guiding strips on new wire if placed on top of joist to protect them or you can clip them on the side. The requirements are more onerous if there is a permanent stair access to the loft. The guide strips rule can be ignored if there is no permanent stairs in the loft (meaning it’s not permanently accessible). This is a great job really appreciated the time you took in the loft.
@@mathman0101 I've been there in the hot loft before. There was one as a heatwave started I just had a bit to finish and plumber (a good chap I know) was in so asked him to call me every few min and come drag me out if no reply (was seriously worried I might pass out). If nobody I trust and could move me is about I tell them I'll come back when it's cooler, not safe working up in that heat - passing out alone in that could be the end of you.
Matt you are so right I had to be in there for no more than 30 minutes used my Apple Watch heart monitor and body temperature function to monitor how I was coping my son was around in case something happened as well.
Your smoke detector is less than 300mm from the light fitting
how is there going to be natural daylight in the room if they are blocking in the window? i thought the b regs says there has to be natural daylight or am i wrong?
🤷♂️
Loft wiring always seems to be a total unorganized mess. Do you know of any countries that have a more structured way of handling loft wiring? Or perhaps any ideas that you yourself think would be good practice if only you had the money xP
Trunking would be a good option. Not that I've ever seen it.
To be honest I came across your account by accident. Even took the piss and made to look a tit. All you can do is apologise and admit wrong.Find myself subscribed now. Very impressed by the standard of your work Pal. Also a fan of CJR.
Do you ever come across asbestos in installations like these?
Hello, I have been watching your videos for a couple of days now and I was wondering about something. Do you always work alone?
I have always been told that an electrician should always have a pair. I always thought they overreacted, it seems that our occupation is very hazardous and a second person could literally save your life.
They are priceless builders, you will be holding them up, because builders never hold anyone up 😂😂
So true! 😂
Were do you re cycle old smoke alarm
Leaving the switch wire in are u Shaw no outer insulation in box no grommet on box no cpc
Jordan, G'day from Australia. Can you briefly explain the idea of an 'electric shower'. Our showers here just rain off mains pressure and there is enough pressure to strip paint, trust me.
Electric shower, has an instantaneous water heater. Normally fed with a 10mm twin and earth cable, protected by a 30A breaker. Plumbed into the cold water mains.
@@charliemarie4360 OK, but doesn't tell me why that is needed? Why can't it just run off the pressure from the mains? Not being rude, I am just genuinely curious.
Not all showers in the uk are electrically operated. The shower in my house isn’t - my shower is plumbed in and heated from the domestic hot water system. Ok😊
@@jamesmartin4500 It does run off mains pressure. An electric shower just heats the water
When you say "would you start or stop and go away"... That makes it sound like you would only accept the easy jobs; fix every problem and then charge your customer accordingly, explaining them exactly what was wrong and how you fixed it
I'd rather rip it all out and start over ^^
I guess you could cut the power and short circuit L/N in a Wago and look for continuity at the other end to identify what cable goes where.
Then do it for free!!!!
Money doesn't grow on trees.
I always recommend the CHEAPEST safely adequate route .
Never got why people omit the earth sleeving. It's easy, cheap and soooooo much neater. Not to mention regs.
Rip everything in the loft out except the feed and rewire everything else.
I agree!
Well done 20K Nick Bundy will be sulking now.
I detest those round junction boxes, dangerous imo.
Me too
Artisan Electrics I’m an old un. I still prefer a decent screw connector in a good quality box with plenty of room to work. The Bakelite connectors are best imo, wagos ok on lighting circuits. Although I had a problem recently, I replaced a light fitting. Switched it on and a very dim light feeding off the wrong switch. I thought I’d cocked the switch and feeds up. I hadn’t the wago hadn’t gripped the neutral feeds. Bugger. Crikey I go on, don’t I ?
Rule 1. Blame the plumber and run
3:39 did you see the size of that monster?
Good luck testing
If they are all having their own shower's are they having the supply upgraded ,
They were all mixer showers.
@@wyndavies5044 I was thinking about the new shower rooms , your going to struggle with 7 mixers running unless they have a dedicated boiler a pump systems
Put some floodlights in the loft, I don’t understand why you work in the dark with a silly little head torch.
Get some Scangrip floods 10k lumens and last for ages on battery. Bluetooth operation as well.
Clearly not used an LED Lenser head torch Roger have you excellent bits of kit last hours, I have the heavy duty model up from Jordan and would last days....Flood lights in an already hot loft at the end of summer, go and have a lie down Roger think you need it 😴
Steve Mcgrath , scangrip nova , don’t even notice the heat. They are so bright you never need to put them on max.
Pretty chilled no need for a lie down , just get the apprentice up in the loft.
I love your video's mush, but I get travel sick watching after a while as your camera whizzes around the location too fast. It's not just this one.
Are hardwired smoke alarms mandatory in the uk?
No
@clockball nope not all, only if hmo
£80 an hour would stay up there all day in that loft
Well done On 20k! #thecopexking @nickbundy will be gutted!👌
I would stop working and tell the client the circuits require rewired, I wouldnt be happy siging a test sheet off after fixing the junction boxes because god knows where else theyre hidden and buried
Was that asbestos on the kitchen ceiling? Pretty grim either way!
who needs to grow old either way?
It definitely has the look of those horrible AIB fixed ceiling tiles that you find in department stores built in the 60's/70's. It would be pretty rare to find them used in a domestic situation but certainly not impossible
If you don't run over and back then you can't charge for a whole roll of cable and the extra time it took to run the cable. I'll get familiar with what's there and rewire it from scratch too many Junction that aren't needed. Of course that's partially assuming that it wasn't the same person because it might have been one person that did the lights and somebody else that did the fan, both wanting to get out of there as fast as possible.
Artex and asbestos tile ceilings everywhere?
Lewis Templeman I thought the kitchen ceiling looked suspect, they weren’t polystyrene tiles by the looks of it. The utility room they are over boarding is probably asbestos cement board as well.
Going to grab some food! Long video ahead!
Yeah!
Rip the whole flamin lot out and start again.
Well done mate 20k.
Thanks
Foreigner here, and I have no idea why I ended up watching this ;)
Is it common AT ALL to just lay wires without any kind of tubing? I know you guys in the USA build mostly with wood instead o bricks or stone, but just throwing wires in between even if it is well organized and even properly documented seems insane.
Just asking...
It looks like Romex 12-2 which has a pretty tough, and at least here in the U.S. anything above 8' or in a raceway or plenum doesn't need to be in conduit. But, all connections need to be in an enclosed box. I believe the code states that it just has to be "protected from damage," and the wire should be rated to offer that protection. I'm sure for the most part UK and US codes are very similar.
I hate lights that are in the center of the shower. When you're in, you're casting an equal shadow in all directions, rendering the light useless.
Do you work alone jordan. No labour?
I try to! But I have several sub contractors who work regularly for me
@@artisanelectrics why dont you get an apprentice?
You really should have been wearing a mask up there in the loft! This old insulation wool stuff is extra unhealthy to breathe in and you are whirling it up already enough by throwing around cut off cable pieces etc. You can even see the fibre particles flying around in the camera light beam.
pack up
I was under the impression those ceilings in the kitchen were a fire risk? So how on earth is the landlord going to get tenants in without removing that ceiling first?
It’s gonna be boarded over
@Artisan Electrics Phew 😅
I'd burn the entire house down and build the electrics like a sane human being with wires IN ACTUAL TUBING. Looking at all these loosely laid cables is giving me an aneurysm.
And also, whomst mental person lays a junction box under a floor?
If there was recessed Spot lights done on the ground floor of a 2 story house years ago there would be a junction box at each light above the ceiling. Which would be below the floor upstairs. Hence a reason for junction box under the floor no?
Who's we?
Don't you work by yourself?
No I have a team of electricians who work for me
