Music video by The Jam performing When You're Young. (C) 2001 Polydor Ltd. (UK)
I was 12 when this came out, as young as the kids in the video. I'm a grandad now. This song genuinely makes me tear up at the rate of knots our lives speed by. If you're young and you read this, please travel, be open minded, make friends all over the world. Live your best life You are old in the blink of an eye.
Wise words my friend!, 57 here, you can’t put it into words how quick it goes.
Youth is wasted on the young, as they say.
25 years young and only discovering most of this music. Started getting into punk as I’m from Belfast and enjoy stiff little fingers. That eventually lead me onto the newer stuff so to speak. I’m now making my through the new romantic wave of the 80s. I was 13 when my mum used to play these songs whilst she cleaned the house 12 years later I’m only understanding the depth behind this kinda music. It makes me sick to think people actually enjoy ed sheeran nowadays
@@HUNTERSRD_ SLF were my favourite punk band as a kid, so raw. I know it's not the obvious choice but At The Edge was my favourite track by them. If you haven't already, i'd suggest listening to early Roxy Music, the lyrics and musicianship are amazing (If There Is Something is like 3 different songs in one, mind-blowing). Their late 70s, early 80s tunes are more commercial but I still love them. You wouldn't recognize them as the same band from 1972. Keep enjoying the music.
Me too mate, born 1967, first love was The Jam.
To this day, so chuffed I got to see them live on the final tour. Life does go by so quick, we need to savour every minute, soon be over !
A great song to dance to, especially my blend of punk and Northern Soul shuffle
For his work with The Jam alone, Paul Weller should be regarded as one of the best ever English songwriters - total genius !
'And you find out life isn't like that
It's so hard to understand
Why the world is your oyster but your future's a clam
It's got you in its grip before you're born
It's done with the use of a dice and a board
They let you think you're king but you're really a pawn'...
This and strange town just pure class
Yes Gr8 band.. Weller is good with words. 💯💯🎸🎸
Yes he is truly gr8 with his lyrics he's just a little difficult to understand what he's saying sometimes 👏
Underrated often overlooked classic Jam track.
My favourite single by them not just for it's musical quality but for the line "And you find out life isn't like that
It's so hard to understand
Why the world is your oyster but your future's a clam" . In my opinion the best lyric of all time. By the way my favourite B side is Butterfly Collector and favourite album track Wasteland
@@denzil4 when there's no future there cannot be sin/we're the flowers in the dustbin/we're the poison in the human machine/we're the future/your future
Totally agree, one of my favourite songs when I was a teenager and still think the lyrics are just so apt. Weller the genius sees the world as it is without any B/S
Certainly in my top 5 😉
Underrated by who?
Love this song listened when I was about 15 now 53 and still listen to it still great tune 👍
Stared listening at 20 now 62 and still have a scooter.
Been a fan since I was a teenage South African army conscript in 1978. Was never lucky enough to catch The Jam live but seeing Paul Weller play at the Brixton Academy on my 40th birthday in 2k was a consolation I can live with. Wearing a T shirt bought at the concert as I write this 🎸
I am 53 too. The first bands I followed were The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Jam. My taste was proven to be right.
@@alicegibson63 was 13 now 56 still riding a scooter ..in maidenhead
Me too bro,'cept I'm 51
At 81 yo I have just discovered The Jam. WOW
You dead yet?
My past was so much better than my future. The Jam. The Best. Loved them days so much.
The world is your oyster but your futures a clam - legend
Paul Weller's best lyric in my opinion
I always hear it as " . . . got your future to plan"? they both work
Voice of a generation. Nearly 60 & it still speaks to me...
Me too🙂
BANG right mate.
Spot on mate nearly 60 still can't beat the jam
Life is timeless, days are long when you're young
You used to fall in love with everyone
Any guitar and any bass drum
Life is a drink, and you get drunk when you're young
Life is new, and there's things to be done
You can't wait to be grown up
Acceptance into the capital world
You pull on some weed, then you pull on someone when you're young
But you find out life isn't like that
It's so hard to comprehend
Why you set up your dreams to have them smashed in the end
But you don't mind, you've got time on your side
And they're never gonna make you stand in line
You're just waiting for the right time
You're fearless and brave; you can't be stopped when you're young
You swear you're never ever gonna work for someone
No corporations for the new age sons
Tears of rage roll down your face
But still you say, "it's fun."
And you find out life isn't like that
It's so hard to understand
Why the world is your oyster but your future's a clam
It's got you in its grip before your born
It's done with the use of a dice and a board
They let you think you're king, but you're really a pawn
You're fearless and brave; you can't be stopped when you're young
You used to fall in love with everyone
Nice one BagBoy 👍.
This park is around the corner from Queens Park tube station. The rest of the video was shot around Kilburn High Rd. I recognise some of the kids in the video , i did not know them personally , but they were from around Kilburn , Kensal Rise & Harlesden.
Absolutely correct. All the kids used in the video where from Queens Park, Kilburn, Kensal Rise, Kensal Green & Harlesden. The escalator was filmed at Kilburn Square. That’s an old mate of mine in the QPR top called Mark Power. One of the Jam’s best songs.
I've seen a kid I know
@@johnburke8667 Is the band stand still there?
Yes, it’s been completely renovated. And the Queens Park area has been gentrified, the houses are being snapped up at unbelievable prices.
Sorry, I should have said what you can’t see is the amount of kids who bunked off for the filming in the park.
Consistently been one of my favourite Jam singles. It was released I think in July/August 1979. It reminds me of that joyous times I had as 16/17 year old watching and following The Jam!
I was 10 at the time! Only got to know this from Snap, great tune and video fills with me with nostalgia for 70s London
I mirror that, saw em twice live as a kid and now 55 years old and Weller 63 next birthday....time flies 👍
@@andysmith8890 you lucky man, I'm 52 and just missed them, my Mum and Dad wouldn't let me go to their last concert at Wembley Arena on my own at 13 or 14 years old
How true it is that life flies by in the blink of an eye enkoy it while you can kids
You think you're a king but you're just a pawn... one of Britain's best lyricist,if not the best. Imo.
“But you don’t mind you’ve got time on your side…”
Often plays over in my mind, thinking of life when I first heard it and it applied to me. Compared with now when time feels a lot more precious.
Just showed how great the jam was back in the day..(and still relevant).. great singles like this and not even on an LP…
You think youre the King but youre really the Pawn.... brilliant and spot on
If you can get the kids joining in you’re onto a winner 🏆👍😂
Wonderful bitter sweet lyrics that totally summed up what it was and still is like to be a teenager in Britain. Barely 20
yrs old when he wrote this.
Life is a drink and you get drunk when youre young......weller what a genius you are....
Just Fantastic.Still the greatest band of all time.
11 yr old mod with a Brutus parka that tripped me up when I walked in my badger shoes. Best jam tune of all time, Bring back the French spike.
I'm 54 ... once a mod always a mod 👌
This was my life back then the jam were my life.
Great song great times when people lived with respect
Probably with the who made the biggest impact on my youth thanks lads
Love Paul's boating blazer. 😸
I've always heard..... "you pull out some weed and you pull out some lawn.." whenever I hear this classic song. Kind of makes more sense if you think about it. Bought this single first week out.
The Jam, Forever young..
the light is going out - going out - going out - going out
Was at school when this came out. Still can’t believe how good it is. We felt this, had a connection. Not the same today. Music back then was so good. The Jam were the best. Period.
,
Same here. Their songs just connected with us, it was a revelation.
TheJam is forever...
Great track. Up there with the best. Probably the best song the jam did. Loved strange town also 😎🎸🎶👍
Love this song perfect song in every way
Reminds me of my childhood going around London on the tube with my dad visiting the museums and shit
Yes, perfect song. The Jam are the best
not
really
45 years old this month.
I was 5 in '77. They looked so old on top of the pops.. Loved it ever since.
One of my favourite Jam tracks. After all these years, this track could’ve been written yesterday. Still so raw and full of energy.
Good old Queens Park back in the old days before gentrification, my aunt lived in Kilburn and we was always here as kids. Great song and lots of memories of the era to go with it.
One of my great jam tracks
The bass on this is fabulous
Love the QPR shirt , best band ever ,best club ever !
Yep spotted the Super Hoops shirt straight away. Always had a soft spot for them, thought you going to piss the play offs this season but for some reason you hit the buffers. As l say about Charlton (every season) regroup for August 👍
@@southlondon63 to be fair , we didnt want to go up , the premier league is full of cxxxts in half and half scarfes , newbies, middle classes ,and forigners !!
I know none of them stood in the " Covered End " " the Loft " " Paddock" whatever !
Charlton are a proper club , as are Rangers !
Love this track, never gets old
I love the wee reggae beat in this tune
The lyrics still true today
My brother always played this on vinyl in 1982 i love this song 🎵 as it takes me back to being 10 years old at school such happy carefree days of a better era in time!!! I love the bass and the screaming guitars 🎸 we no longer produce masterpieces like this anymore sadly!!! 🥰😍🤩😎🥳🥳🥳🥳
Love this song. Love this vid .. they were just beginning to realise how great they were ... you can see it on their faces! The excitement of breaking through....
Any guitar and any bass drum... Perfect!
Absolute Classic

The jam when your young classic song from the eighties good song from them forty five years old still sounds good now good stuff
The jam were a band from my youth, and spoke to youth at the time through there music, they were unique, little did you know how unique until you look back, I was 17 when this was out, still listening to this at 60
Although I had already "borrowed" my brother's All Mod Cons Album, this was my first ever single. 13 and already in love with what could be? I discovered The Beatles, The who, Kinks and small Faces through this band! still trying to write a song that compares...
Listening to this again, does Weller have a time machine, did he see it all mapped out? I used to sing this song then but now, wow its come home!
Fantastic lyrics the jam where fantastic and their music is still being discovered.
Paul Weller one of the greatest songwriters this country has ever produced.
Absolute classic Weller. Well The Jam to be fair. Belting lyrics. “ Tears of rage roll down your face but still you say ‘it’s fun’ “. “It's got you in its grip before you're born
It's done with the use of a dice and a board
And let you think you're king but you're really a pawn”. Genius lyric. Only thing that annoys me about the great man is he sent his kids to private school.
I didn't know that's where he sent his kids, about as anti establishment as sainsburys using start on their ad 😮
КЛАССНЫЕ ВРЕМЕНА!Мне тоже вспомнилось детство в начале 80-ых)
Only Paul Weller would write a song about the expectations of the young not being realised when he was young himself .He was so right of course.
the single most beautiful song ever written.....Weller's lyrics are quite astonishing, the the guitar parts are so emotive. And as always Foxton and Buckler hold the whole thing together and really drive it....
Your fearlous and brave , you cant be stopped when your young !
Thank god I was young then and not now
O to be 14 again
The first time I seen the jam in concert
1978 the odeon Birmingham
And I was the there in 1982 Bingley hall
Me too
Fav jam song, lyrics sum up life, back then . 40 years plus most of us just fall in line. Life's like that
As 13 kid in Cork Ireland spent alot of time visiting family in London introduced to the JAM saw them @ Wembley Arena December 82 ... 16 at time 😎👍
Simply the best jam song, well also a town called malice
I love he done a song from a kids point of view ,showed his sensitive side, and imagine being o ne of the kids in the video now,
'I wasn't writing about what it would be like in their(the young)shoes,I was IN their fackin' shoes'--Paul Weller
On the other hand he wrote "Private Hell" from a granny's point of view.
Any guitar and any bass drum!!!
Keep the faith 80s mods
Was 15/16 when this was in the charts , riding an FS1E , many scooter's n bikes later , still riding a scooter as well as a Bonny nearly 60 a granddad n still listening to the jam, great times great music late 70s n 80s .
I'm now 64 still riding my scooter.
Nothing wrong with that.
Always loved this, one of Weller's greatest from a fantastic period in his song writing career. The final lines always got me, 'in this country the lights are going out..............' it's not sung on every version.
fantastic tune.
Not overlooked by, its a classic what we jam fans grow up with
what a fantastic band
Still my favourite song of all time, bought it on the same day as I also bought Duchess by The Stranglers
Esto es música, ritmo y pasión.
Totalmente de acuerdo contigo 👍
If I can say one last thing in your videos, WOW !!! Your Hot show more in those than yesteryear. Wow !!! Girl show it all.
Tears of rage run down your face and still you say it’s love , gotta be in top twenty all time one liners
When I heard that for the first time I thought I’ve made ex girlfriends feel that way and also been on the end of it to !! Things you do when your young 👍
Hi Love muss B, the lyrics are actually.... "tears of rage roll down your face, but still you say it's fun. Cheers brother!
A perfect song, from the flawless arrangements, the rhythm and of course as usual the super true lyrics
The older I get, the better this song gets!
absolute weapon of a tune
Weller actually looks like he is enjoying himself here!
Fantastic wish i was still young 🧒
Done with the use of a dice and a board.. one of the greatest odes to youth ever written
Lyrics so clever and true. Think you are King but really a Pawn!!! Yep Paul,so right
The best music video ever!
Happy Modfathers Day!❤💙❤
Genius....
Greatest song ever
A better song about being young has never been written and probably never will. The genius of Weller. Should be made poet laureate. For every generation!
Happy memories of listening to The Jam on my mates record player, then riding on my Lambretta GP 150 to Herne Bay Market where the bloke there sold Boating Blazers and sta pressed trousers 👍
Just saw Foxton last week playing with SLF man he's still rocking!
I love your music. Thank you. I knew you were Meatloaf's backup singer, his number one Girl. He told me, trust me. He and I go back years, Alistair once from America, but returned to Ireland aged 3. love you
Perfect. Right there.
one, if not my fav Jam single
Favourite Jam track
Super Smashing Great✔✔✔🏴🌹
The video kills it.
my fav Jam song what an incredible claim to fame to be one of the kids in this video wonder where they are now
“Tears of rage roll down your face but still you say it’s fun.” The epitome of my youth
Siempre con Stylo!
this was stuck in my head for about two weeks straight and i couldn't figure out the song name and it was really getting on my nerves, but at least i know now
What a sound! I cannot fault them in any way. They are in my all time top 10, but if I had to pick just one, then these would be it!
