I have the 4200 Coupe 2003, had it for 3 years now and no major issues. On 58000 miles now and it's a fantastic car to drive. The cambiocorsa gearbox is easy to use and shifts perfectly and quickly (not sure if it's has a software upgrade). I have sports exhausts which sound fantastic and sprints the car to 60 faster than my 911 3.4l . Not as engaging or rewarding as the 911, but certainly special and more exotic, and it's Italian.

Great video, Jay! I bought my wife a 2002 Spyder CC with 23K miles. We've had a few repairs, but I just love this car (when she lets me drive it!). I have a little bit of cowl shake, but nothing too horrid. It surely wouldn't turn me off from another purchase. The car is so freaking visceral and always a head-turner. I picked up my wife's CC for $18K US. Pretty sure I could sell it right this minute for $30K here in the US. These cars are so rare in my area. I think there might be 2 others which I've never spotted in the wild.

I’ve had a 2002 CC Spyder for about 7 years. I think the review is pretty accurate. Like someone else said, after a few weeks the scuttle shake faded for me. Driving in Sport makes it worse as it firms the dampers. Handling etc. is enjoyable. It’s not a sports car, it weighs 1700kg, but it has character and beauty which is what I wanted.
Also, it’s not a chopped down 4200 Coupe. The Spyder was launched first and was a completely different car from the 3200.

I owned one of these for 2 years and covered 12,000 miles in it. Black convertible with cream leather. I can honestly say that looking back it is my favourite car that I've ever owned. Absolutely loved it. Flawed, yes, but in terms of being interesting, rare, beautiful and fast it ticked all of those boxes in a way few other cars could. I replaced it with a 996 C4S convertible, which was probably slightly more dynamic but I don't look back on it anywhere near as fondly.

Interesting observation: I've never ever heard a financially well off person complaining about a car's reliability. The type of people who do do that are invariably always working in a job paying minimum wage, and therefore can just about afford an older prestige car, but not the maintenance of said vehicle. And to cover up their ineptitude, blame the car for being unreliable. Moral of the story: Buy a well and properly maintained example of your preferred car, keep up the maintenance, and it will be pretty much fine.

Never had that problem with ours. Sure, it's not as sturdy as the 360 Spider we also have, but it's a proper curve eater. Ours is slightly lowered and was delivered without the Skyhook suspension, so that might play a role. But I don't at all agree that this car suffers from scattle shake, at least not ours. Around my suburb in Melbourne Australia, we have quite a few Maserati Giblie's and perhaps two Ferraris of mixed pedigree, they are all driven by Italians who happen to be real estate agents. Which explains it all, given the astronomical prices of these cars here. So apparently an Italian heritage and the access to vast amounts of money will inevitably result in sports cars from Italy, this also applies to motorcycles, though perhaps less so, as they are cheaper relatively. Most young Italians will be riding an MV Augusta triple cylinder, and they certainly look the business.

Yeah I knew you'd pan it for the scuttle shake, I've got an 02 plate as well. TBH for the first few weeks it really annoyed me, (mind the windows don't rattle on mine) but now I guess my brain has been programmed to cancel that out, like white noise. Instead it is now just another of the inputs from the car. Does seem like the problem was reduced in the later 03 or 04 on cars, but I'm sure they're still not great.
As you say the highlight is the engine, but I really don't find the handling bad, but yeah easy to provoke oversteer even with the stability on. Having had a Boxster S and Griff 500 in the past I'd still take the Spider for it's sense of occasion and the Maser engine is a lot, lot nicer than the pushrod Rover.

The underbody cross braces must be loose. Also a strut brace.
I have a roadster (another brand)

Do the aftermarket do a cross brace for the chassis?
We had a saab convertible and when I had the aftermarket spider frame added to the chassis it reduced scuttle shake dramatically

I was wondering if that was something you could get, I know also on the MX5 you could get some inserts that go into the door latches that also reduces the scuttle shake.

Buy a good late one you’ll be fine. Or buy a late coupe or Gransport as it’s 10x better.

Boy that driver window just shakes the entire time you are driving it. Not good. A stiffer chassis would also help the car navigate the turns better. But you are right, it shakes like a car from the 80's. And given the short wheelbase you'd think it would handle much better. Maybe new Bilstein shocks would make a difference? Or is that what is already on it? lol

Those prices are dirt cheap. You could do a full chassis mod and still be half the price of a 911 of the same vintage. So at that price, why complain?

If a Maserati sounds bad then it's broken. Saw and heard my 1st MC20 at the weekend, sounded magic.
What about putting it on air?

I have a 2005 spyder and don't find the scuttle shake any worse than any other convertible I have owned. You kept it in sport mode which hardens up the suspension a lot, and this is why you may find shake increases and also you put the roof down and this also will add to scuttle shake. It seems your goal was to trash the car as much as possible, which is very vindictive of you. A convertible will normally have a softer suspension to avoid scuttle shake, which makes the Maserati spyder quite unusual as it has the feature which makes the suspension very hard. Why don't you do another review and keep the roof up and switch it out of sport mode and show people how the car is no different than any other convertible. You should have given a review of both options.

I'd disagree on the looks though. Looks dumpy with that mutilated wheelbase, nowhere near as pretty as its Coupe brethren, especially the GranSport which just looks so stunning. I think Maserati did the correct thing in GranCabrio by keeping it a 4-seater, even though it is quite a bit of a barge.
