I know this is a big departure from my normal content. It's rainy season and I was away for a bit as well, so I wanted to try this. Let me know if you also enjoyed this and feel free to request tasting or reviews of any Japanese food or drinks. If I can get Pat on board again, it's bound to be hilarious.
My favourite beers are pilsners so I enjoyed this (and I'd hoped to be pretentious about Sapporo being my favourite but I'm good at pretentious pronunciation so I'll settle for that!). But I'm still curious about a Japanese craft beer tasting!
Soooo good! You and Pat are hilarious! It was great to see something different from you and of course see you cut loose! I would love to see more like this exploring different kinds of beer. BRING ON THE BEER! Fabulous job on the vlog! Loved it! GO EGYPT! LOL 🍺🍺
Hi and thanks, GoNorth Japan for sharing. OMG, that's fascinating...Are you, two big fans of IPA, Lager, and Stout??? Hoppy not hoppy? Do you mind me asking the ABV, alcohol by volume for each beer? Fascinating content. Great work. 🍺🍻🍻
Can't speak for Pat (he seems to have eclectic beer taste) - but I LOVE IPA and only drink later or stout occasionally. The ABV for most of those in the video would be 5.5% - that's the standard for those beers in Japan.
This was a fun deviation from your usual videos! If you do more like this, I'd love to see craft beers (or wine or spirits!) that's more local, such as from small businesses that you can only get in Japan and maybe are unique in some way. The same way I enjoy learning about Japan's unique landscapes, I also love learning about other unique aspects like food and drink and culture. ☺
Loved the video, watching this a little bit buzzed was a real trip when Pat started completely Deadpan lore-bending. Would love to see more Japanese alcohol reviews. I've been working through trying as many Chu-hi as I can, but over here in the UK they're SO expensive, some are nearly 800JPY a can, so it's an eyewateringly expensive prospect. Keep up the great work, glad I've found your channel through Chris Broad!
Holy crap at last somebody gave Super Dry the roast it has always deserved and it was from none other than you Quinlan! I've been in my entire adult life frustrated it's stayed as the absolute staple and somehow friends of mine, whose palates I usually trust otherwise, seem to have genuinely liked it or have been lenient to that coloured bathwater. Or have Asahi been bribing all of them? Asahi surely has deeper pockets than me so it could be possible. My rivalry with Super Dry must be some kind of fate because both me and them are born on the same year in Japan. Admittedly they've achieved a lot more since then, being the bestselling beer for more than 30 consecutive years, while I am just plain old nobody. Joking aside I'm so glad to know my taste in beer is quite similar to yours. Your verdicts on each brand felt like totally spot on for me. I wonder why Sapporo appears to have earned more recognition overseas as THE Japanese beer compared to other brands, were they particularly good at marketing strategy or something?
Glad to help! To be honest I've never been a fan, so I wasn't surprised that I ended up having that impression drinking it blind. Glad to hear that our opinions on beer line up! I have no idea why Sapporo got so popular abroad. (I actually didn't know that it was so popular abroad..) If I hear anything I'll let you know!
Pat's rating scale, what can you say, it keeps you on your toes! Please, please, please do some reviews of good craft brews in Japan. Quinlan, you owe it to your home state (maybe do brat reviews, too)! This is much more chill that to see you risking your life straddling a mountain ridge (not that the scenery isn't breathtaking). Mix it up! Cheers!
Man I love Yebisu, but can't get it here in NYC anymore :( Luckily it seems Suntory Premium is finally available at a few select places, will have to try that soon.
That was hilarious! On a scale of Mountain Trails to the Alleys behind 7-Eleven I give it a high Family Mart. Top job! As a beer gotcha for those of us that love a good Japanese brew but can't get back in to Japan yet, be aware that some of the Japanese brands that we can get locally can be made here in Australia under licence or imported from other parts of Asia like Vietnam. Your Asahi or Sapporo are most likely (at least here in Oz) to be made here or in Vietnam (unless your local Bottle-O or Japanese grocer has the proper imported version - for Asahi or Sapporo though it doesn't matter that much 😁) Great job. Loved it. Cheers! 🍻
@@GoNorthJapan It does. It isn't just Japanese beers though. Usually the larger well known foreign brands can be made here under licence. Interestingly Asahi now owns CUB, out biggest brewery. They make Fosters for example.
I tend to like the more serious comments. I like tasting videos in general --so this is a fine new direction. I would like to see travel videos where you explore the history of a place.
Japanese beers, outside of some the craft beers they have been doing, similar to American adjunct beers. Taste the same, but for me I prefer Sapporo, because it is very clean and price point, $17.99 for a case
Any of the suggestions sound good but I think trying a few real craft beers would be good. You're really close to Iwatekura beer and I've "met" the guys from Black Tide on a Zoom call. Shiroyama from Kagoshima is really good too, but with a 2.5 barrel system they probably don't get distributed very far. Even though I don't drink Chuhai much, I'd be happy to watch a video on it.
Gonna nitpick a little about the definition of Happoshu without googling (except I did google this 7 years ago in Japan). It is beer by the wide definition, but the amount of barley malt is under a certain percentage, and for that reason has lower VAT. I like it, just as I like rye malt in craft beers and wheat malt in weissbier.
I'll give this a 2.5/2.5 :) I'd definitely be interested in more Japanese craft beer content (tastings, visiting breweries/bars, food pairings, etc.), especially if there's an opportunity to weave it in with the other topics you're interested in.
I anticipate....many comments such as "fizzy lager". Since I only visit Japan when I am there I do not chase craft beers. I find Yebisu and Kirin Ichiban Shibori just fine to accommodate a variety of foods. Now I DO somewhat obsess about local sake choices which can be both well priced and delicious in the less traveled areas of Japan.
Yeah- I LOVE sake. In fact I even studied and got this qualification as a "certified sake sommelier." It's like wine though in terms of there being thousands of different types, though less regions at least. That would be fun.

Q, this was great content, you both were interesting and entertaining . . . the only problem was you kept saying pilsner when all the beers you were tasting were lagers . . .
Peter!!! Great to hear from you! Hope all is well. Miss your enormous presence at game nights!! But Pilsners are a type of lager... and the barrier is thin. From my googling they are mostly pilsners I had thought. I guess it depends on the source. Premium Malts is definitely a pilsner, but yeah, the others are mostly labeled as lagers.. anyway, pretty much the same..? Pilsners are just slightly hoppier lagers anyway.
I actually quite liked Sapporo, though Ao Oni is vastly superior, and I thought Asahi was at least a competent try compared to the affronts to beer culture I've seen in other countries before. Now as someone forced to abstain from alcohol for medical reasons, I'd appreciate a primer on the non/mock-alcoholic options available in Japan - just in case they ever let tourists back into the country on anything but a soulless corporate package tour in the future. Not necessary just beer... I think I even saw "Sake" when I googled the topic before.
I've actually brainwashed myself into really enjoying Suntory's "All-Free" non-alcoholic beer. In order to drink less I have those pretty much every day, much to the amusement of friends. (If I drink that around Pat, for example, he relentlessly mocks me... lol) I wouldn't mind doing a taste-test review of those, but would be harder to find someone to do it with me, as most people I know simply say they're all horrible, whereas I definitely think some are better than others. Also yeah- I LOVE Ao Oni. That's my favorite beer in terms of what's available at a reasonable price at the local grocery store.
Got a sad news for you, non-alcoholic beers here taste absolutely horrific except for a select few and there's a very good reason behind that. Unlike in other countries where they make mock beers by first brewing real beers and then removing the alcohol content, some Japanese tax laws on alcohol prohibit this method, leading to manufacturers having to come up with concocting vaguely beer-adjacent flavours from barley extracts, water, sugar, various additives, food colouring and stuff. And they unsurprisingly fail so bad. Those that fare slightly better than others use a decent amount of hops to compensate for the lack of basically everything that makes beer tastes like a beer, whereas most of the so-called alcohol-free beers here don't even do that. We do have far superior German imports like Burgbräu and Veritasbräu for reasonable prices but they are less widely available as ordinary supermarkets tend not to have them.
@@GoNorthJapan Well, the bonus point of forcing your (possibly soon to be ex-) friends to drink the stuff with you is they'll likely be miserable doing so, which may make for good content.
