- This is the kovilpatti kadalai mittai. Kovil patti, in Thoothukudi sells more than 30000 Kgs of Kadalai mittai every day. These famous chikkis also got their GI tag in 2020.
A sweet tooth and an idea can go a long way. Hand-pounded jaggery and groundnut balls were a household treat. But in the 1940s, a sweet stall owner, Ponnappa Nadar thought this would be a good addition to his menu.
He wanted to make this candy last longer. So he experimented with different quantities and ways to boil jaggery in water. When the syrup got to the consistency he wanted he added in the groundnuts with cardamom and mixed them well.
While it was still hot, he poured this mixture onto a sheet and spread it evenly. Once it cooled down, he cut it into pieces. These were sold for one paisa. This became a big hit among everybody.
Soon the two workers in his unit went on to set up their own shops. Today, more than 20000 families are involved in this business. One Kilogram of Kovilpatti kadalai mittai sells for ₹150.
The makers usually source the jaggery from Salem and Theni. But the hero of the candy is the ground nut. They say that makes all the difference. The groundnuts are grown in areas around Kovilpatti such as Kazhugumalai, Sathankulam and Arppukottai. They feel that these groundnuts have a sweeter taste and are apt for kadalai mittai.
They make it a point to not store these groundnuts for more than a day to maintain freshness. Earlier it used to take hours to manually break and take the skin off these groundnuts. But now, machines do the work quickly. The jaggery-groundnut mixture is still made manually in clay ovens. The waste from kovilpatti’s matchstick industry is used to heat the mixture.
From being sold in bus stands, now these chikkis are being sold globally. There are customers who also request organic kadalai mittai made from country sugar.
