While typically seen as a beach destination, Tunisia actually has an extensive list of surprising attractions and exciting things to do for those that choose to venture out from the sandy beaches and emerald waters. This North African nation has a little bit of something for everyone. From ancient ruins to bustling marketplaces; sweeping sand dunes to craggy mountains, Tunisia has a ton of hidden gems waiting for you to discover.
Tunisia was once a part of the Roman empire, and the cultural remains that the Romans left behind are more than enough to warrant a visit. Likewise, the history of the Arab Empires has also enriched the area with some of the most beautiful examples of traditional Islamic architecture.
Nearby Morocco oftentimes overshadows Tunisia, but that just means that the streets are a bit less crowded. Petty theft and minor crimes are common, so you might want to keep track of your belongings at all times, but by no means is Tunisia considered unsafe. Despite having a lack of tourism infrastructure, the nation is still up and coming. Visitors are lured in by its historic capital city, its gorgeous coastal towns, and the iconic Star Wars film set that can still be seen there.
The majority of visitors will start their trip in Tunis, Tunisia’s capital. From there, it’s very easy to access other Northern African destinations such as Egypt or Morocco. Tunisia can be a great place to spend a few days or you could easily spend a week or so discovering all there is to see and do. The sun-socked beaches are certainly high up on many travelers' itineraries, but if you're curious about what other attractions are worth visiting, watch this video to see our picks of the best things to do in Tunisia.
