- Tunis, the vibrant capital and largest city of Tunisia, is a stunning Mediterranean destination. The city is situated on the Gulf of Tunis, bordered by the Lake of Tunis and the port of La Goulette. With its rich history and culture, Tunis is a hub of activity and a must-visit for anyone exploring North Africa.
The Libyans founded them in the 2nd millennium BCE and, over time, occupied by Berbers and Numidians.
Tunis was ruled by several civilizations, including the Phoenicians, Romans, Arab Muslims, Ottomans, Spanish, French, and Germans, before it gained independence as the capital of Tunisia in 1956.
This history has made Tunis a city of wonder with the most significant cultural contrasts.
Tunis is divided into two parts: the World Heritage-listed old city and the new city, or ville nouvelle in French. The town boasts a captivating mix of North African and French architecture and many ancient buildings.
From the winding alleys of the medina, it is filled with tantalizing aromas and colourful bazaars to the sleek and contemporary architecture of the modern city.
Here are the best places to visit in Tunis:
1. Bab el Bhar or the Sea Gate
2. Medina of Tunis
3. Great Mosque of Zaytuna or Zitouna Mosque
4. Madrasa Slimania
5. Streets of the Ville Nouvelle (New Town)
6. Independence Square (Place de l'Independance)
7. Cathedral of St. Vincent de Paul
8. Municipal Theatre (Théâtre Municipal)
9. Tunis Clock Tower
10. Bardo Museum
11. Ancient city of Carthage

I and my friend Ifti just came back from the tour of Tunisia and loved it. People are very friendly and courteous. Hammamat a city on the Mediterranean Sea with its sandy beaches and crystal clear sea along with its historical Fort was brilliant. Tunis with its old city of A-Medina with its 1000 years of bazaars, historical and religious institutions together with its modern and colonial buildings are fantastic. Sidi Bou Said with blue and white villas and modern architecture with tree-lined streets is quite enjoyable. Sousse with its sandy beach and Al-Medina city bazaars is fantastic. El Jem with its Roman Colosseum is mind-boggling. Khairwan has more than 1000 years of history of Muslim presence with its Al Medina walled city and its winding streets with fantastically preserved old houses selling gorgeous and colourful carpets, rugs and shawls. 🎉🎉💖💖
