A Rekenrek is NOT a 'Counting Frame' or an abacus (and this really DOES matter)

Dear Karen, Just wanted to say thank you. I have never been very good at maths and my oldest son was so poor at it that he had to be kept behind a year. I was very upset as I wasn't sure I was going to be able to help him. We are in Germany and a teacher said something to me about him not being able to "see numbers" and it made no sense to me whatsoever because he could count but I started to look into teaching him maths and I came across your channel and learnt about subitising and it all made sense so I started with that and went from there. My son at that time couldn't do ANYTHING, he didn't even understand that you don't need to keep counting from 1 but with your explanations and other resources we started getting some traction. The day I told him we were going to learn subtraction he had a panic attack and burst into tears! He was so scared because he'd basically been traumatised at school and was scared to ask questions as the teacher was clearly frustated with his lack of understanding but we did number facts and he quickly got the hang of how numbers move around and are connected to each other. I wish I could have taken a picture of his face the day he finally understood hundreds tens and units. It was amazing, he is now top of his class for maths and he LOVES it. Your video talking about the "fourness of four" really spoke to me helping me understand that maths is actually innate in all of us rather than this mysterious thing that only certain people "get" I watched this today because my son needs a bigger abacus and I wasn't sure if he needed one with two colours or just one on each row. We actually have this and it's been really helpful and I think I'll stick with it because it helps strengthen addition concepts I feel. I like what you said about asking questions and yes I think if I don't know something, it's simply because I've not asked enough questions, I never thought about that "asking questions helps us know what we don't know" and that's half the battle isn't it? Realising we don't know what we don't know. Anyway sorry for the long comment but I just wanted you to know that you're helping people out there and making a big difference to people's lives. I didn't know what subitising was or how important it was but I've been able to explain it and help others support their children in their own maths journeys and it gives confidence because people realise that they are not learning something new per se but rather awakening something deep and innate and that makes a big difference in the approach. Thank you Karen. 🙂
