- Roger Rees as Lord Marbury in The West Wing. Episode 111 "Lord John Marbury"
BARTLET
Every time he talks about colonial Western imperialism, I always want to remind him
that the United States is also a revolutionary country that threw off its colonial masters.
LEO
Why dont you?
BARTLET
I keep forgetting.
CHARLIE
[sticks his head in] Mr. President?
BARTLET
Is he here?
CHARLIE
Yes sir.
BARTLET
Send him in please.
LEO
Oh, God help me.
LORD JOHN MARBURY enters, looking disheveled.
BARTLET
John!
MARBURY
Mr. President.
BARTLET
Thank you for coming. How was your flight?
MARBURY
Intoxicating.
LEO
Oh, I see.
MARBURY
[to Leo] Allow me to present myself, Lord John Marbury, I was summoned by your President.
LEO
Yes. Weve met, ten or twelve times. Im Leo McGarry.
MARBURY
I thought you were the butler.
LEO
No, Im the White House Chief of Staff.
MARBURY
Nonetheless, would you have something with which to light my cigarette?
LEO
Oh, Im afraid we dont allow smoking in this part of the world.
MARBURY
Really?
LEO
Yes sir.
MARBURY
In this part over here, we encourage it.
LEO
Sir.
MARBURY
Its Your Lordship, as a matter of fact, but it couldnt possibly make the least
difference. So, tell me, how can I be of service to you? If its within my power to
give, you shall have it.
BARTLET
We need your take on the situation, John.
MARBURY
What is your take on the situation?
BARTLET
The world is coming apart at the seams.
MARBURY
Well, then... [hands his coat to Leo, imperiously] ...thank God you sent for me!
LEO
Yes.
The fact that he continually calls Leo "Gerald" is hilarious... Just another part of this marvelous show..
"Gerald! You old sock"
Except for the *one* time he called Leo by his right name, and that was to mock him. hahahaha
@@hobyboy07 You are getting there.
@@qntw2000 lol
I always thought it was backhanded sign of respect. He knew exactly who and what Leo was and he called him Gerald just to wind him up. Those people he had no respect or time for he basically ignored..
I loved Leo and Jed's earlier exchange in this episode --
Leo: You're really going to let him in the White House where there's liquor and women?
Jed: We can hide the women.
TokyoSpike but the man deserves a drink
TokyoSpike The President [to recovering alcoholic, Leo]: “… but the man deserves a drink.”
Roger Rees was as talented as any actor in the world, he had a fantastic gift for comedy acting. R.I.P.
0:57 When you almost puke on the president's desk, but you rally like a boss.
Every time Lord Marbury enters the room and starts sparring with Leo, I get the popcorn. I love Leo, but these encounters are kind of my guilty pleasure. Elegant humor at its finest. Rest in Peace to both of these men.
"Uh, it's Your Lordship as a matter of fact, but it couldn't possibly make the least difference."
Lord John Marbury was the best recurring character on The West Wing. Fantastic dialogue.
Lord Marbury is even more brilliant than many might realise: Chief of staff is what a butler IS.
LOVED the Lord John Marbury character. Should have had more of him.
We can hide the women, but the man deserves a drink.
That is one of my favourite line on the show, and one o my fav episodes
And Marbury actually respected Leo tremendously, but couldn’t help himself.
Always hilarious! All of the scenes with this character are gold!
They go to platinum if the Leo character is in the scene, too.
0:21 - best handshake ever. Gets a running start on that.
And splays his fingers to give himself a MUCH better chance of actually connecting !
Yeah that is pretty fucking hilarious
One of the running gags around Lord John was that most of the White House staff couldn't stand him, which I found made them sound like condescending snobs. Marbury was HILARIOUS most of the time and when he spoke seriously everyone in the room stopped to listen. He was a fantastic character and I adored listening to him. The White House staff must have been pretty stuck up to not be entertained by his constant shenanigans.
May you make people hilariously uncomfortable in heaven, Mr Rees.
Vesperitis well said, RIP Roger. Hope you see John Spencer
Loved this character, what a wonderful actor, RIP Mr. Rees.
IMO, every, great show must have a character that makes you both roll your eyes and smile at. Whom frustrates you and fascinates you. That you both dislike and (mostly) like. Lord Marbury was one of those characters.
Bravo. RIP. Roger Rees
How did he not get an Emmy nomination for Best Guest Star or whatever the proper award name is?
Yes he did: 1983 Nominee Primetime Emmy
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or a Special
The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby
Bartlett: Is he here?
Charlie: Yes sir.
Bartlett:Send him in, please.
Leo: OH GOD HELP ME!
I wish they had made more Lord John Marbury episodes...
Lord John Marbury, Earl of Croy, Marquess of Needham and Dolby, Baronet of Brycey, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United States for the United Kingdom...and the only diplomat who prefers to meet the president whilst drunk.
I also find it funny how the writers messed up his title. A marquess outranks an earl, so it would come before the earldom in his title.
I'm pretty sure that he prefers to do EVERYTHING drunk.
RIP Roger. And thank you for some of the best television moments I've ever seen.
I wonder if God said "We can hide the women but the man deserves a drink" just before he called Roger home. :)
@MrPeterpiper1969
Given that Roger was gay, no need to "hide the women".
RIP Roger Rees
He hands Leo his coat like he still doesn't realize that he's not the butler.
I have always appreciated fine craftsmen spin their delights as I watch in awe.
Lord John is one of the best characters in the whole damn series.
Lord Marbury was simply the best role in times when the situation needed some humor
With out a doubt my favorite recurring character
The only person Leo truely scared of was Lord John Marbury........ its hilarious
Crackerjack writing, yes, of course, but Rees's delivery is matchless.
They could have spun off an entire series for Lord Marbury. have him bounce around the world as a diplomatic James Bond, telling people in excruciating detail the hard truths they don't want to hear, and the harder solutions they don't want to do.
Possibly my favourite British character.
GERALD!!!!
timeless classic what a duo
:59 is the exact moment he almost hurled on the presidents desk lol
John is right to include the US in western colonialism. The Philippines, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, Samoa, the Virgin Islands, Hawaii and Alaska were all colonies of the USA. The US at Versailles in 1918 positively encouraged European colonies in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and were willing to fill the vacuum left by the European empires around the world
I love Leo in this scene he is fantastic.
Standing too close to Lord John and a person can get a contact high. Leo, an alcoholic, must feel the need to reach for the hard stuff after dealing with him.
It's a nervous condition.
Lord John Marbury wins all the things.
love this scene....
Geralds face “oh God help me!”
Should have done a spin off centred around Lord John
Rest in Peace Roger Rees :(
This series should be part of any high school political studies
anyone else watch this and when lord Marbury "gives" leo his jacket saying "thank god you for me then" immediately think of John Cleese in the lords?
it's funny how lord marbury's theatricalness lends itself to his englishness.
...and yes, they can be like that. At the same time the aristocracy can be wonderfully eccentric, for example why wouldn't one keep ones prize pig in the dinning room of ones family pile, because it's too cold in the piggery.
P G Wodehouse got it just right.
And never forget in another episode Sir John says "Abigale, your breasts are magnificent" - and delivered in true Sir John Marbury fashion.
Allow me to introduce myself. Lord John Marbury. In a previous life, I was Sheriff of Nottingham.
White House Chief of Staff is, by definition, a butler.
Umm. No. Chief of Staff is a senior manager of all the White House advisors and support staff. COS had a top secret security clearance and implements the President’s policies at the highest levels. Doesn’t bring drinks or clean up.
@@OhNoNotAgain42 The literal definition of a butler is: the chief servant of a household who supervises other employees...that is why Lord Marbury keeps calling him the butler. That is the joke. By your definition, Leo is still the butler. A butler generally has the complete and full confidence of their employer up to and including sorting out their mail (ie top security clearance), and implements the directions of their boss to the subordinates that will actually do the work.
COS is a very, very special butler. Leo also does clean up the President's messes.
Gerald !!!
Oh... I thought you were the butler.
Lmao.
Two British Characters in the West Wing an erudite and drunk lothario aristocrat, and an erudite sardonic snob. Pretty funny really.
I'd say they have us nailed.
Didn't Bartlett also say to Leo "I thought you were the butler for a couple of months too."
@daytripper270 watch clip 05, he calls him Leo as he's leaving, I'm almost certain he calls him Gerald for lols
GERALD!
I love that guy!
Marbury was an absurd American caricature of an ambassador let alone a British lord. No ambassador would refer to the chief of staff as a 'butler' even jokingly, and no lord would introduce himself, or correct someone with his title as 'Lord'. The overt tension between Marbury and Leo rang fake - if they disliked each other (which was possible), they'd both be more diplomatic about it: literally. But still, the Marbury side-story in WW was entertaining and often very amusing...another Sorkin success in a great series.
Oh god help me
Why is that damn clock never running?
Yes I see the resemblance!
😄😄😄
Martin Sheen. Please stay a little while longer.
@daytripper270 I think it's for fun. But it could be a bit of both!
@TokyoSpike but the man deserves a drink!
@daytripper270
Probably just one long gag for his own amusement XD
Hilarious
Season? Episode?
Leo wants, desperately, to kill this man.
He could have been a good dr. Who..
Haha. I thought you were the butler.
REALLY?!?!
Yeah america threw off colonial oppression.....then proceeded to colonize abd oppress
REALLY???
The US didn't throw off it's Colonial oppressors (England) ; the Pilgrims left to became one over the Indiginous population in the new territory that was later called the US.
and most of the British people were on the side of the Colonies
Ever hear of a little spat called the Revolution?
The hell its you lordship in this country we don't have an aristocracy and in the White House of all places we don't say that.
you most CERTAINLY do!
(president) I wanna remind him that the United States is also a revolutionary country that threw off it's colonial masters !
(Leo) Why don't you ?
(president) I keep forgetting
The real answer is = The United States never threw off England or the real owners of the United States : (
If it couldn’t it matter what he calls you John than don’t mention it in the first place. Sigh, British people.
well....we SAY it doesn't matter, but of course it does. sigh - our American cousins
The least convincing and most irritating character - make that caricature - in the programme. To cap it all, he mispronounced ‘Islay’ malt.
REALLY????
