    One of the things that kind of symbolizes how Lucy has changed but stayed the same is her "Okie Dokey" lines. She never loses the Okie Dokey, but as the show progresses it feels like it takes more out of her. She's a character that desperately doesn't want to change, but slowly slowly the wasteland is grinding her down... absolutely fantastic writing and acting.

      I lost it at the part where a certain part of a certain person's body has to be cut off, and she can only "OH GOLLY" and "HOLY MOLY." I felt it PERFECTLY captured what sort of society she came from and where she entered

    Ella Purnell is a young talent that I'm so looking forward to see what her future looks like. She was amazing in this show as the lead, her American accent is absolutely perfect. If anyone hasn't seen Yellowjackets, I highly recommend you see it as that was also one of her best work (eventhough her main role was in the first season but still, a pretty good acting from her)

    The 3 main characters represent some of the most common player types throughout these role-playing games: The idealist who just wants to do good in the world, the selfish power fantasy, and the more evil slanted murder hobo. The show runners have clearly played these games. There's no way they could've have gotten the tone and so many details right otherwise. As a longtime player of the franchise, this is the best VG adaptation I've ever seen. I couldn't be more pleasantly surprised.

    Spoiler for the ending of season 1!
    I was underwhelmed by the reveal that Michael Emerson's head contained the secret of cold fusion. They've already established that a single power core, which is small enough to hold in your hands, is enough to power an entire vault for hundreds of years. The Brotherhood of Steel must have dozens, maybe hundreds of those power cores, since they have so many knights. So why is this new power source so important?

    • @_uncredited
      @_uncredited Месяц назад +5

      Mini-fusion cores belong to Vault-Tec and the military (Brotherhood). In the game, they are prized items because the civvies can't make them. 'Cold fusion' is this show's McGuffin because it means the great unwashed get free unlimited power, but I agree it's very weak in a universe that already bypasses the 'power' problem. I'd much rather it had been straight up revenge or the secret to non-ghoul immortality or something.

    • @kwileby09
      @kwileby09 Месяц назад +5

      I see it more like a power core being able to power a base or a Vault like 4, whereas cold fusion can power the region and beyond. And to your point of course about the Brotherhood or the Enclave who was developing the fusion, that's kind of their whole M.O. to keep pre-war and advanced technology seperate from the common folk of the Wasteland.

    The opening scene has some exposition about Coop being divorced and blacklisted; Season 2 will likely have more flashback scenes to the 2070s of Coop working with Moldaver and getting discovered & "handled" by Vault Tec. That's when we'll learn how Moldaver made it 200+ years to Shady Sands. Her line about hipocrisy and using your enemies' tools makes me think she's going to make her own version of Bud's Buds but with her resistance fighters in the stasis tubes.

Overall I like the show's production and the performances, the pacing was quick but gave room to great moments, and though I thought some of the character writing was flat in some places everyone got their chance to grow and shine. From a gaming perspective i think it did really well and paid attention to the Fallout world. When the raiders attack vault 33 and Lucy realises who they are I shouted RAIDERS at the TV and she went "raiders" like we both at the same time realised who was attacking and it was really cool. Even the raider armour she wears towards the end and then has it on top of her vault outfit. This is very much like the first time you leave the vault and into the wasteland in Fallout. You pick up armour from raiders first and its a nice detail that she puts it on top of the jumpsuit as you would in the game. Lots of other details, the details to the weapons is amazing. The pip boy looking like it does in the game with health stats. I cant wait for the mirelurks and deathclaws to arrive in the show and The Enclave and the Institute - I hope they have synths.

    Spoiler heads up.
    Regarding your point about whether Vault Tec was manipulating the governments of the world or launched the bombs themselves, im inclined to think its the former but at the same time i dont think the show will answer that. There are details in the show and games would make it weird if Vault Tec themselves dropped the bombs (namely that in the show, Barb knew her daughter was at a birthday party and if she dropped the bomb then, she'd be knowingly killing her, and another character at that board meeting is a character from the games who had predicted nuclear war but got the exact timing wrong.) That said, a major theme in the games is that it doesnt matter who dropped the bombs first, what mattered is that they were dropped and nothing could change that. So i think the point of that scene wasnt to say "Vault Tec definitively dropped the bombs" so much as "things were already muddled and tense, and Vault Tec was making it worse"

    Btw, franchise canon is that China started the Great War, but the show stays within canon. Vault-Tec was willing to go to extremes, but they didn’t have to. Also, the dog is such a layered representation…for those who know the games, the fact that the dog seems dead and then gets up and is fine after being given a Stimpak (the syringe), the name Dogmeat…all of it is a giant gift wrapped with a bow for Fallout fans. They created a narrative reason for how the dog acts in the games, which literally turned bugs into features. And yet…it still makes sense and is relatable for non-gamer audiences. Dogmeat is the Best Boy, period.

    Yet I still managed to watch almost six of the episodes in one day.

    Hi Dan! I love the show! It's perfect! Another RUclipsr related the show to The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly. I played Fallout 3 for a while, but it got a bit desolate for me, but I'm definitely going back as I have crushes on Charon & Gob. It's also an addicting game. The only thing that would make FO3 better is to be able to have better developed romances with more characters & to be able to give Gob his bar without needing to install a mod.

    I felt Lucy was a fully fleshed out female character that changes and developes as she continues in her journey but still keeps the core of what makes her unique still resonating in her actions. Quite a contrast to what they did to poor Katara in the live action version of ATLA.

    • @pmpowalisz
      @pmpowalisz Месяц назад +2

      Katara was an established character with inferior writing in the first season of the cartoon. The live action show did what it could with only eight episodes. Thankfully the following seasons of the cartoon had more experienced writers involved. Since every Fallout game had different characters, the show runners could also make their own characters without messing with the lore too much.

    • @isaaclopez-eb6yg
      @isaaclopez-eb6yg Месяц назад

      @@pmpowalisz but the thing is that regardless Katara should have been easy character to write then she she was already established that's the problem here. Not even having an established character was enough to do the job that better writers were able to do with a completely new character. Even more of a disappointment pretty much

    • @pmpowalisz
      @pmpowalisz Месяц назад +1

      @@isaaclopez-eb6yg live action Katara did not lose her core self in the live action show, while still while still changing and developing as she continued her journey. Can you give me objective examples (based only on the live action show) why you think otherwise? Again , only eight episodes, so much less screen time than the cartoon. Cartoon Katara was poorly written enough, where she needed a bunch filler episodes to have character development. So given the screen time ratio, an established character would be a much harder challenge.

    • @isaaclopez-eb6yg
      @isaaclopez-eb6yg Месяц назад

      @@pmpowalisz mainly mention how the lack of skill from the writers is not an excuse to disappointingly give a female character a water down version of a personality from that of the cartoon that was more 3 dimensional. She was mostly able to learn to bend her element without difficulty instead of having trouble like in the cartoon. No matter how many episodes a show may have it is the priority of the writers to make a fully realized character that can stand on her own. I do agree that more episodes in the case of ATLA could have helped the series better.

    • @pmpowalisz
      @pmpowalisz Месяц назад +1

      @@isaaclopez-eb6yg that exactly is an example of poor writing for Cartoon Katara. Even in the cartoon she did not have even remotely enough time to learn how to be good at water bending. So the live action having Katara being a prodigy (aka someone who was naturally good at something to not need much schooling at all), made a lot more sense. A prodigy doesn’t need years of lessons to be good at a particular skill set, only some instruction on how to restraint and to hone it.

      Maximus is one of the classic RPG player archetypes in the games: the selfish power fantasy. Not really evil, but morally neutral with loyalties and values that can quickly shift from moment to moment depending on the situation. I didn't start actually liking him until about halfway through the season, but I think most players of the games who are honest with themselves should be able to find him pretty relatable.

    Westworld is a really unfortunate item to bring up when comparing this to other Nolan productions. Person of Interest would have been a far better example to bring up: you really get to see where Johnathan's strengths in this show come from, namely, the juxtaposition of past and present that allows you to recontextualize characters (a mainstay of PoI's entire run), solid characters with great arcs, revealing and/or resolving major plot points at times that feel incredibly logical and payoff well, and knowing how to have characters interact and meet up at times that don't feel entirely like plot convenience alone.
    That being said, I'm right with you on all your points. I loved the show and thought they nailed the tone and message of the games beautifully. I felt that some of the more...let's say questionable material (largely a matter of personal taste, I know) was largely used for shock factor and incredibly not something I necessarily wanted to see nor had any bearing on...well anything so could have been cut, but it was also never so much that it weighed the show down for me.

    I'm a really big fan of those games and i have to say they did a wonderful job capturing the feel of that world. There are a few little details that they changed (like the location of Shady Sands on the map) but as the rest is great i'm fine with that. Also the mix of comedy, drama and action is what this series of games always was about (apart from Fallout 3, first one made by Bethesda, that did lack a bit in light/funny department) and its great they manage to recreate that specific tone in that series. I also like the casting, even minor characters where well picked and fit their roles. Really the only thing i might nag a bit about is lack of any radscorpions in the show... lets hope we will see more mutated wild life (and mutated man, you know who im talking about ;)) in season two.

    I really enjoyed the show, and was surprised by that. I am a fan of the games, but I have issues with the developer's most recent output, especially the writing in their games. And after the disaster that was the Rings of Power, I had little hope that this show could make the games' inconsistent storylines into something interesting. But after hearing some good reviews, I decided to give it a chance and ended up marathoning it. I found the tone to be deliciously ironic, and the characters go way beyond their surface qualities to really dig in. The cast was very good, not just the leads but also the many supporting actors
    I am thoroughly impressed with what they pulled off here, to the point that I've been actively looking for interviews with the producers. Looking forward to Season 2!

But. Loved the show.
