Therapists Are Using VR Headsets To Cure Phobias (HBO)

  • VICE News correspondent Dexter Thomas is absolutely terrified of heights. A tiny startup called Limbix thinks they can cure him with a VR headset.
    Now that virtual reality is getting cheaper, it’s becoming a more accessible option for use in exposure therapy. It allows, for example, a therapist to take their patient to a plane, or a cave full of spiders, or a street corner where they were mugged ten years ago - all without the cost and danger of “in vivo” treatment.
    Dexter Thomas went to Palo Alto to test out what some people are hoping will be the next big thing in therapy.

      jonesynahmeen i did too. I conquered it by rock climbing. It wasn't easy it took about a year and being 1000ft up on a vertical wall with nothing under me to break my fear and feeling of vertigo. Best way to conquer fears is attack them head on. I see why virtual reality may help but in actuality you know your not really there. An experience for real may just shoot you back to square one

    • @blueberrybandit2388
      @blueberrybandit2388 6 лет назад +8

      Keep in mind that a 360 video on a normal screen is not going to give you any sense of being there. VR will give you the perception of depth, just like real life. That's why you can tell just how high up you are in VR.

    • @VarjoViulu
      @VarjoViulu 6 лет назад +13

      It is actually legitimate. This is the same as exposure therapy. Here you also have a professional with you to guide you through it. The exposure part is only one half of the therapy. It is usually paired with cognitive behavioral therapy. RUclips does not offer that part. Also saying that you could do it without someone else does not mean you would e.g. People who have a fear of elevators could just get into one to solve their problems but that won't happen.

    In my opinion, this therapy would be more effective if the VR also had headsets with realistic environmental sounds like when he was at top of the bridge he should be able to listen to wind sounds or something.
    Also he shouldn't just be sitting on the sofa, he should be walking with the VR on. You have to make it as realistic as possible. Engage as many senses as possible, not just the eyes. Only then he will be able to overcome the fear irl.

    Initially, I was interested by the thumbnail. Then, a few seconds in, I thought this was stupid, reinforced by the virtual bridge. 18 seconds in, and I broke down in tears thinking of someone doing something like that to me. I'm extremely familiar with exposure therapy due to a fatal car accident I survived. However, I have phobias that weren't accident related and therefore not addressed.
    I'm glad I let go of my judgmental opinion and that I became open to something that could really help people... and myself.

    I know this vid is from 2018 but.....
    So many people are talking about how great this would be for commercial use, but that's such a bad idea! If you have a serious phobia, this could cause a lot more harm than help if not used correctly. Virtual reality therapy is meant to be done in a session with a counselor that you talk you through the scenarios and how you're feeling. They also are the ones providing the actual therapy! Just exposing yourself to fear won't do anything impactful. The therapist is trained and can help you get to the root of the problem. I had no idea why I was afraid of bees, turns out it was a boundary thing and I had issues from childhood adoptive trauma. You think putting on a VR headset and being surrounded by bees would have taught me that? I hope this comment was just hostile enough to get you to seek reason.
