  • In Game of Thrones and in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, Targaryens have always been referred to as the only dragonlord family to make it out of the doom of valyria, but after reading the world building book “The world of ice and fire” you learn thats not necessarily true.

    Fun fact. Almost everyone in Lys has the blood of Old Valyria running through their veins, so much that majority of its citizens have the classical blonde hair and purple eyes Valyrian look. Makes me happy that the Valyrians aren't necessarily extinct.

      In the books, you can't even get close to Valyria since it is an active volcanic site filled with toxic gas and Tyrion never gets close when he passes, he just sees the smoke and fire on the horizon. In the books, Tyrion passes by the ruins of the once great river city of Chroyane on the river Rhoyne which became known as the Sorrows after the Valyrians destroyed it. The Sorrows is basically a leper colony for the Stone Men. "Valyria" in the show is basically Chroyane in the books.

    Adam of Hull of house velaryon had no confirmed targaryen ancestry but was a dragon rider.. it is the valyrian blood not the targaryen blood that allows them to be dragon riders

    • @mrlopez-pz7pu
      @mrlopez-pz7pu 7 лет назад +36

      "Targaryen" is a family name. "Valyrian" is the name of a racial & ethnic group that is indigenous to Valyria. So, with that being said, the Targaryens ARE of the Valyrian race. Valyria was ruled by about 30 families (or something close to that number). These families were known as the Dragonlords. They were a small fraction of the Valyrian race as a whole, & as such they were the ruling elite of the Valyrian Freehold . Before The Doom, the Targaryens were one of these ruling Dragonlord families. Simply being a member of the Valyrian race is NOT what makes a person a Dragonlord , any more than being British does not necessarily mean that one is a member of the aristocracy.
      The Dragonlords had an innate ability to be close to dragons for reasons lost in the mists of time. They perfected this ability over the centuries by not only selectively breeding dragons, but by using blood & fire-based sorcery on them, which was dangerously potent & perilous stuff. But the Dragonlords took it even further by not only using these breeding techniques & sorcery on the dragons, they also used it on themselves. This is the origin of why the Targaryens wed brother to sister - as with all of their Dragonlord kin & ilk, brother-sister marriages were done to to preserve their ability to command dragons & to keep such power from becoming diluted with the blood of normal people.

    the tv canon has dany fireproof ALL THE TIME... shouldn't that mean some other valryians were also fireproof all the time? the doom of valryia works in the books, but with the tv it kinda makes gives dany's fireproof loopholes to certain events.

      Gabriel Divina The Valyrians did have magic well beyond anything we've seen up to this point, including fire magic. Also there are theories about the link to dragons being magical, which would be why not just anyone can tame a dragon. Taken together I don't see why being fireproof wouldn't be possible.

      @@redadmiralofvalyria867 The Velaryons don’t live on Dragonstone, they live on another island next to Dragonstone called Driftmark. The Velaryons were basically the Targaryen’s cronies as they shared similar origins (Valyria) and married each other frequently through the centuries. When the Targaryens were overthrown, the Velaryons standing and power in Westeros fell. In present day they declared for Stannis in the War of the Five Kings. They still have a powerful navy, not as strong as it used to be but strong. That is why Stannis wanted them on his side. As for WHY they would join Stannis, we don’t really know. It could be they knew they couldn’t win in a fight against him and his army so they joined instead, or they could’ve joined on their own free will. Keep in mind the Targaryens have been out of power for years now and the last two known ones are on a whole other continent, faded into irrelevance. The Velaryon’s could’ve simply joined because they hated the Lannisters more than the Baratheons. After all, the grandmother of Stannis was a Targaryen. Also, sorry if anything confuses you, i’m typing this while very sleepy. 😂 Just saw how much I wrote 😳 oops.

      If I had to take a guess, since the Targaryen's were the only dragon lords left. That meant any other surviving Valyrians were eventually hunted down and killed by those who hated Valyrians. For annexing their lands and enslaving the people they conquered. Not to mention the Dothraki could be another factor. After the Doom, there was a period of non stop violence called the Century of Blood. Because without the Valyrian dragons keeping them in line, the Dothraki went absolutely wild pillaging as much of Essos as they could. Only cities like Qarth and Mereen were spared; even Yunkai, Astapor and other major cities got raided at least once.

    • @saljpal3

      The way I see it, not all Valyrian families were dragon riders. The dragon rider families probably had the highest status among the Valyrians and lived in Vlayria since it was the seat of their empire. The non dragon riding Valyrian families probably branched out to other parts of the world because of their lower status.

    Seems like flimsy writing to me. The dragon lords in Lys and Tyrosh were just killed along with their dragons?
    Wasn't the first killing of a dragon in westeros a VERY big deal? And the Targs were a lesser dragon family. So they would assumingly have lesser dragons.
    How did a bunch of commoners in Lys kill dragons? Do they have scorpions in Essos? If dragons and their master's were that easy to kill, the valyrians would have never ruled anything

  • @danpeterson114

    I am far less impressed with Martin's "world building" after viewing this little history. Considering how devastatingly omnipotent the last three dragons are in the more 'modern times' of Game of Thrones, it is ridiculous to think people thousands of years earlier would be capable of killing the surviving dragon lords and their dragons with far more primitive technology as related here. Martin states these early dragons were far large than Drogon. Dragons this large could easily wear metal armor to protect any vulnerable area, like grills over their eyes (like a knight's helmet or chamfron on an armored horse, so no dragon could be shot in the eye as we see in other portions of this "history". These dragons would be so valuable that every precaution would be taken to make them virtually invulnerable. Unfortunately Martin is too ignorant or real military technology in ancient and medieval times to keep his world even remotely realistic. The notion of Jaime spurring on his horse to attack a dragon on the ground as we see in the last season of the series is also totally asinine, though I cannot say if Martin would ever do something that stupid in his books. The first Roman cavalry to see Elephants were terrified of them and would not approach them at all, so to think that horses would attack a dragon confirms how ignorant the writers of the series are. (Just as the idiot-Bishop who dreamed up the St George and the Dragon fairytale, and all of the equally ridiculous dragonslayer nonsense that imitated it). It is a shame such a great series as Game of Thrones has degenerated to such childish, laughable rubbish (despite great acting and special effects), because both Martin and the series writers are far too ignorant of real military history and technology to write a realistic story.
