Jimmy Carter confirms for me an unpleasant reality: people dedicated to honesty and principle rarely make very good politicians because they tell it like it is, instead of what people want to hear. And he committed the cardinal political sin of daring to tell the voters that solutions involved sacrifice on their part. This speech was a political disaster for him. Why? Because he was ripped for telling voters that solutions involved them, not just the government.

And that my friend is quite likely why America is in the position it is in right now having voted in a man who will say absolutely anything to get what he wants. For all the love and respect I am reading in the chat I can't help but recall that Jimmy Carter was deeply unpopular at the end of his term and was often derided in the decades since for "being too soft" an appeaser, unlike Reagan who was going to "make America great again" and stick it to them commie's. It's hard not to see dark times ahead for the United States and consequently the rest of the world. Not that sole responsibility lies on American shoulders far from it, we need global policies to navigate the future that we are facing not more isolationist nationalism, that's my 'man within the masses' opinion anyway.

His reply, "Nobody cares about that stuff". You know what? He's right. Morality has left the country. Plain and simple. In 2000 we (4) held 7 jobs--- yet our mortgage rate continued upward from then until we lost our home and equity. The Bank said in bankrupsy court that they did not have to help us.
I could go on with the evidence we have that the bank forged documents, but people stop listening when you tell your story.

It was the best and worst of times for the whole country, but time went on through the Reagan years, then Bush 1 years, then Clinton years, Bush 2 years, Obama years, Trump years, Biden years, and here we are with Trump again coming back this month on the 20th. Jimmy Carter was before Reganomics, the US economy was nowhere near as financially inequal as it is today. The highest earners were taxed up to 70%. Because of this, the richest Americans weren't too rich, but the American lower class was not as hellish as it is today. It just seems so weird now seeing a president talk about such a normal issue as energy security, instead of the constant clown show our current world faces.

@@scootertooter6874 "Getting taxed 70%" is completely different from "contributing to 70% of the final amount". Those two numbers have no mathematical correlation at all.
Take 100 people. The top 10 have $1000 each, and the bottom 90 have $20 each. The top 10 fork up $700 each (they are taxes 70%) and the rest fork up $5 (they are taxed 25%). The total tax collected is $7450.
In your example, from the words you said. Those 10 people instead fork up $200 each, instead of $700 like before, they all get to pocket $800. Now the 90 remaining fork up $7 each, instead of $5 like before, they get to pocket $13 (instead of $15 like before).
The total tax collected is $2630. $2000 from the top 10 people means they contributed 76% of the tax burden, $630 from the remaining 90 people means they contributed only 24%. But in the end, the top 10% are taxed far less, 20% instead of 70%, but still contribute to %75+ of the tax burden. While the lower 90% still get taxed more, while contributing to less than 25% of the tax burden.
If you want to come here with numbers and data, then smugly tell people "Try again". Perhaps look at the numbers and data you are presenting, so that they actually hold some water.

Ask yourself why he left office with the worst poll ratings in modern American history, …. Until … wait for it … President Dementia Biden. Both are weak vacillating examples of leadership and exercise of executive authority. Both will go down in history of being the catalyst that produced much better Presidents, Ronald Regan and Donald Trump.

Carter's presidency came at a crossroads of American history; the postwar boom in the economy had dramatically slowed with inflation setting in, and with Kennedy's and LBJ's support for civil rights and Nixon's southern strategy you saw a dramatic shift with African Americans leaving the party of Lincoln and southern conservative whites abandoning the Democratic party. Even a man with as strong a character as Carter wasn't able to survive the dramatic shifts and navigate a new course for the nation's future. What we eventually got was a lurch towards conservative politics and a long line of mediocre and abysmal presidents who largely abandoned the plights of average Americans. I don't know if I agreed with every decision that Carter made in his presidency, but I do believe that Carter doesn't get the respect he deserves for his support for human rights and his advancement of peace throughout the world.

Although not a fan of Carter during his presidency, nor for many years thereafter, such feelings mean little now. I've come to see him in a much more positive light. For one thing, the times were against him. In the 70's, our population became very "me-focused", absorbed in instant-gratification, largely tuning-out politicians & retreating from civic involvement, engaging in a general cultural atmosphere of psycho-babble. It was all about themselves. Much of so-called traditional American society was dissolving & re-evolving. There was little to no unanimity among our "leaders" as to how to address persistently nagging problems or connect with the average citizen, now absorbed in their "pursuit of happiness" amidst rampant inflation, layoffs, & widespread unemployment---even the old tried-&-true mantras about the lingering Cold War, the Soviet threat of communism, etc., were becoming trite & irrelevant. The U.S. had become a kind of continental jigsaw puzzle, its pieces hopelessly scrambled, without order or direction for re-assembling, lacking cohesion or a template as to where the nation was headed, its purposes & destiny remaining unclear. Carter had to fight all this. His decency & honesty were obvious but he suffered from a poor voice that was far from commanding or authoritative. I know it's a small thing, but the actual physical voices of our national & local leaders play a part in how we respond to them. Carter's voice was too soft-spoken & weak-sounding, with virtually no projection. With so many other voices clamoring for our attention during the long, confusing decade of the 1970's, I'm afraid Jimmy mostly was just ignored & not taken seriously, a trend that, to this day, has yet fully to abate.

The problem now is that most Americans (people under age 65) are not old enough to have gone through hard times as a nation during a depression or world war. All American under age 50 have known nothing but a comfortable era of decadence as a nation. People who lived through the Vietnam war era of chaos are now 70+. This condition has made politics into entertainment and about electing the candidates that will make the opposing side the most angry. The presidential election of 2024 had the worst candidates possible. No one will realize the dangers of the wrong people in government until there is some major crisis that rocks the country to wake people up. With the debt the way it has spiraled out of control this crisis will probably be the failure of the dollar and hyper inflation with mass unemployment. The only thing keeping it together are the Chinese and Arabs buying massive debt that is completely worthless and will never be collected. The Chinese do it to steal tech and industrial know how while the Arabs buy in exchange for the US to provide their ruling party national security with military protection. It is unsustainable and will stop one day.

I remember after he left office, there was a little of talk about how he was the worst president. I was 28, wasn’t into politics, but i did watch the news. I was confused because there weren’t any wars that our troops were sent to fight under his watch. I have come to realize that all talk was because he was a good president and the opposition was trying to sway us to their side.

This is how democracy works: politicians are mere representatives of the citizens; the true sovereign is the people. The state is composed of institutions, whose members are elected to represent their voters, and then others are chosen. In other words, people come and go, but institutions remain.

The climax here is at 4:15, where President Carter quotes an excerpt out of his journal, "We cannot consume 40% more energy than we produce, (with WE being the KEY WORD)".

Jimmy Carter was part of the “Greatest Geneation” - the parents of the Baby Boomers. They understood sacrifice and duty. Generations that have followed have enjoyed the spoils, but have been spoiled with enjoyment. Frivolity has invaded government. And nobody will realize what we had until it is gone forever.
