Before sticking the screen definitively, it should also be said to test all the functionality of detectors, cameras, touch functions, including buttons to make sure that there were no bad manipulations during the repair operation !!!
    Thanks for the video.

I was worried about replacing my high-end older oasis with this one ruclips.net/user/postUgkxCgPI5O2AtmcHq9SJhgsCGbpAzJAJfrJp but it is surprisingly light and the screen resolution is just as good. I never had the warm light on my old kindle, but i do not use it on the ipad so I will probably not need it. I think the only thing I'll miss is the self-adjusting light, but this is so worth it!

I really hate how hard they make it to replace the battery on the surface. It could be a solid instead of flexible like when phones had replacable batteries and click into place instead of using a very flimsly cable. It is good there are videos like this as it's very hard to do without them so thanks! No thanks to microsoft for making it this hard though having to remove everything just to replace the battery is very annoying.

Also as a recommendation. Don't get any glass screen. Get the sp5 screen and also a upgrade data cable to go with the screen and to work with the sp4 board. If you get the sp4 screen, you will have the same failure flickering issue in a few years.

Excellent work, I have a battery to replace so this was a great guide. I was torn between trying to do it with the motherboard still on on taking the board out and I think I will side with taking the board out. Symptoms of dead battery and screen:
      - You've charged your device fully, but the battery charge level starts falling in a few minutes, like going from 100% down to 0% in 15 minutes.
      - You see that the screen is cracked.
      - You've pressed the power button, but the screen is blank.

If you do this, don't use metal tools. You might short out or damage a device. Also wear an anti-static band when handling parts or replacing/removing the shield covers. Lastly, the tool used to cut around the screen edge was inserted to far in. It should only go in about a quarter of an inch.

One thing I would not recommend is that metal pry bar to open up. The frame is aluminium and will Nick easily as done by a novice. So use a plastic triangle wedger to pry it open slowly. Not to protect the glass screen, but to protect the metal frame.

Thanks for the very helpful video. But you didn't show at the end of the video that the battery is working - the computer was still plugged in. I received the following e-mail from a local computer repair shop:
"Unfortunately the Surface Pro 4 is one of the few devices that are unrepairable. Once you disconnect the battery from the device, the device no longer recognizes a battery in any capacity. Meaning that the device will only work or be powered on while it is plugged in. This issue is unique to the Surface Pro 4 and there is no work around for it in our experience."
Can anyone confirm that they have successfully replaced a battery in the Surface Pro 4?

I did this and replaced the battery and screen. Worked fine after with and without charger plugged in. When you turn it one after installing new battery. You have to wait 20-30 Mins. Leave it on charge. Attach the keyboard and turn on. Screen may still be black - test the keyboard lights come on. Now you know whether the power/ battery is working. I used the keyboard to activate the screen again eventually. This whole process in the above video needs a great deal of patience to do. But its possible. Hope this helps

Well, my Asus K53SD from 2012 still gets 2-3 hours on a battery, while it wasn't a true endurance champ back then, maybe only 4 hours. So, what's the point on this, if you need 1 hour to replace the battery once in 3 years, it's kinda worth to have a slim form-factor right? I agree it's much more convenient to have a user replaceable battery... My LG G5 just charges it outside the phone, fantastic if you use it like me and sometimes take photography and filming to the next level, from 10 till 100 percent within seconds! :)

My only gripe with this design is that this is not sold as a tablet, it is sold as a "lap-able" device, with the pen and the keyboard. The whole glue it together and treat it as a device you throw away after something is wrong with it is way too expensive. These machines cost anywhere from 1200 to 2000 Canadian dollars where I live. Same with Apple devices as well, it is too expensive to consider this not a laptop

Microsoft Support dismiss the problem and don't give my any help, so I have to solve the problem myself by buying a battery and replace it myself. This behavior is really unintelligible for me, as a battery that blows up is not just a convenience problem, it is an actual risk and should be attended my Microsoft instantly and without further questions... I'll never spend $1'000+ in a Microsoft Hardware product and would definitely not advise to buy a Surface.

I'm here because I paid them for a replacement and it lasted just under a year. I *will* say that one culprit to watch out for is that MS has instructions on how to manage the Surface Pro's battery life, to not leave it plugged in all the time and not to keep the battery topped at 100% perpetually (a problem plaguing just about anything these days). And so I'm here trying to DIY because they told me I'd need to buy (another) new one after such a short time.

Tried this because my battery died after warranty expired. Ended up finding a couple tiny cracks in screen after spending an hour to get screen off. Don’t bother trying this at home, or at least check every once in a while by powering on to make sure you haven’t cracked screen. It’s easy to get impatient, the glue is very tough.

SP3. Having done it once, I think there are couple of things had I done differently, might have worked better. I didn’t see the two cracks until I turned it back on. It would take a ton of patience to get it right and I’m a pretty patient person. There is one spot where you risk damaging the connector to the screen if you push your tool in too far; also once you have half the screen loose it’s tempting to start gently pulling up on the screen to loosen it more - definitely don’t do that. You might think you’re not cracking the screen but you probably will.

Ah, quite old model (though 3 years isn't that much), having seen SP3 internals I understand it's quite harder than the SP4. This sort of battery repairs are what worries me to buy a Surface Pro 4/2017, you have to remove everything to get to it & even the guys at iFixit is having a hard-time. Guess that's Surface & Apple for ya, buy once (probably great experience) & don't bother repairing (sad for wallet/convenience).

I replaced the screen & nothing comes up on the new display. I thought maybe I had a bad display so I purchased a 2nd display & ended up with the same results. When I hook up a mini display cable to the surface I can touch the blank screen & see that the screen senses my fingers on the screen but I can't get an image on either of the 2 screens to save my life. Any suggestions? I'm not buying a 3rd screen.

@@rewatechnology2008 I replaced the screen because it was cracked. The cracked screen was still working when I took apart the surface. I had one of the replacement screens working for a brief second. The only thing on the screen was a red band across the screen then it disappeared. I ordered a new digitizer & 1 of the 2 ribbon cables thinking that might solve the issue & I'm still dead in the woods.

I have opened many Surface devices and I directly noticed that this guy totally forgot the fan. It is normally attached to the heatsink. Also as some others noticed thermal paste needs to be cleaned on both the cpu /gpu ,heatsink and new thermal paste applied. In regards to the closure of the Surface, I prefer to apply the double-sided tape first on the case and only then lay the screen over. Better chances to avoid leaving "air gaps". (isolation). That Surface with wouldn't last long but I understand this only a demo. ;)

    • @antfr1993
      @antfr1993 4 года назад

@@Swanlord05 I think you misunderstand. I already have a griffin case and the case isn't relevant to what I'm getting at.The hinges broke and was trying to take my surface pro 4 apart, unscrew the old hinges and replace them with new ones. Because one side has a broken hinge the kick stand bows even with my griffin survivor case( also I wouldnt switch to any other case because its drop proof). The hinge didnt break because of falling it broke because of i opened the kick stand all the way and it gave out. The case doesn't fix that problem. And no I wouldnt use those other cases that keep the kickstand closed. I actually found it easier to just get a newer laptop since microsoft charges 500 for replacement.

Amazing that the parts are glued like this and nobody is complaining about it. At a Oral B toothbrush or a power cord, the EU is going to make new standards, but a tablett is ready for the trash.

You don't actually have to disassemble the main board for the battery replacement, a little over disassemble, but I guess it will work.

  • @EPeltzer

Why put all the double stick tape back down when reassembling? You are just perpetuating the idiocy of probably cracking the screen due to it being impossibly difficult to remove. It is crazy that a device like this is so difficult to open and repair. I would just put down a few dots DS tape to hold it in place. Also, this is a great video to show why people should refuse to buy these devices that you must destroy trying to open up for service. The only videos of people opening up any Surface Pro I have seen, the display is already cracked, or they crack it trying to pry it up.

Wow, respect, so much patience. I wonder how much they charge for this kind of work. More than what the device is worth at that point maybe? I got a pro 4 my battery life if like 1.5~2 hours now. Just going to wait for pro 7 or whatever and see. Maybe I will just pay someone to replace the battery if nothing good comes out by year end...

Great video. Very clear and well produced.
But I don't own - or know how to use - any of this stuff. Also your steady hand is incredible. I don't have the fine motor skills to even attempt this. There would be broken bits all over the place. :)
I get that means this video isn't for me. And that's fine. But I also know Microsoft did not have to make the Surface Pro like this. The screen could have been fitted in several more easily detachable ways. The battery could have been accessible. So for that matter the fan in the i5 and i7 versions of the SP because that tends to go after a couple of years.
But they didn't. So know we need a workbench - a heat gun, some special spatula sort of tools for lifting screen and what-not. ( I do own a lot of guitar picks mind you :) )As well as a very steady hand (something I really do not possess)
Or we can put the SP in the skip as more tech land-fill. Which - sadly - is where mine is now.
