Are there any records, or has anyone theorised, about the Christian pilgrims, who were entertained, by Saladin at Jerusalem? I’m sure that would’ve been most intriguing. I feel that had Richard planned for a longer campaign, he could’ve defended his gains, organised water supplies and captured Jerusalem, within a few years longer than he stayed in the Holy Lands. Then the Crusaders could’ve conquered Ascalon and launched campaigns for conquests in Egypt. This would’ve taken many years for a successful outcome, perhaps in 10 years Richard might’ve been hailed as Pharaoh, or even an Emperor. Richard’s Achilles heel was his cowardly bad brother, bad King John. It was Richard’s desperation to ensure the security of the Angevin Empire that caused him to quit the Crusade prematurely. Along with the constant bickering and back biting from the French Crusaders. Although he did secure a successful campaign, Richard only partially completed his full Crusade mission. The battle of Jaffa should’ve emboldened Richard, his army and his Crusader allies, to have a solid crack at capturing Jerusalem. This may well have taken up to 5 years to accomplish, but he would’ve better spent that time doing this, rather than being captured and ransomed by the Germans. When Richard made King Phillipe of France swear on Relics, not to trouble his lands. I suspect that Richard had a thought in the back of his mind, that he wanted to war against Phillipe and have the sanction of the Church on his side. Perhaps the Crusaders should’ve split into two armies at Jaffa? Richard to besiege Ascalon and the French and Hugh of Burgundy to besiege Jerusalem. Personally, I would’ve switched to a defensive strategy, strengthening and consolidating the coast cities and towns and built aqueducts and canals to bring fresh water to Jaffa and Acre. Allowing 18 months to 2 years for this to be completed and I would’ve petitioned the Pope and Christendom, to send more armies and supplies to the Holy Land. Then either besieged Jerusalem, or Ascalon and then Jerusalem afterwards. I think Richard was somewhat impatient and aggravated, by the constant adversities that he faced, from his supposed Allies. Why did Richard sail to Italy and then travel through the Holy Roman Empire, putting himself at risk to then be captured? Why didn’t he sail, all the way back to his homeland? Or even stopped to visit the Pope at Rome to gain some extra support and guidance?
Without John and backstabbing allies, Richard would have most certainly taken and held Jerusalem. Who knows what other victories and lands he could have taken against the Muslims had fate given him the time without having to deal with homeward pressures. The seas for ships back then were very dangerous is probably why he opted for the land route on his attempted return.
