I play a lot of pickleball and watch many pro videos, but I have to say, I always learn something from you. Your game analyses are particularly informative. Keep up the great work!
This is the best play breakdown that I have seen. I also like the pace that you go through each point without talking the point to death. Pickleball strategy videos are hard to find. Very well done. I'm tagging this and will watch it every so often as a refresher.
sooo helpful to see analysis of real tournament play and not staged easy planned shots in a practice setting. This also does pull together all your other video tips and brings them to life. well done. more of these, please.
Finally. Someone understands when to stop and split step. When you or your partners ball crosses the net, you split step and stop and prepare for the ball coming back. You will be so much more balanced and able to hit a ball well as your improved court awareness. Great job of explaining when to stop. Well done.
I really like all your videos, but I have to say this is the most educational video I have seen in at least a year! Nice job. Absolutely love it! You’re one of the best RUclips Pickleball educational video creators online. Please keep the match analysis videos coming, they’re just fantastic.
Gotta second this! I love that your videos are to the point. The play-by-play videos, imho, are rare gems and they truly set you apart from the other pickleball content creators. Keep up the great work!
Much appreciation coming your way from the Midwest. As a lefty, it’s awesome having a high-quality instructional channel created by a lefty! Thanks also for your good-natured humility.
I'm 1 min in and already loving it. The perfect example of when to split step. I see my partners constantly getting beat by this shot and I'm not perfect but these rarely get by me. I always wondered why and it's because I'm stopping soon enough to react Edit: so many great leasons in this video!!
This is a "save" to re-watch video. One of the best, most thorough breakdown vids I've seen. You hit on 3 critical skills I need to get better at to move to 4.0. The reset, the split step and smarter, ball movement (around) when dinking. The interspersed commentary on shot selection & situational positioning was also super helpful. Hopefully this vid gets watched by tons of 3.0 to 3.5+ players. Breakdown of high level play really illustrates why pickleball is so addictive to many of us. Thx so much
Been really enjoying your videos bro, especially these where you review your actual match! I'm trying to go from 4.5 to 5.0/5.5,, loving the journey! Excited to watch this one while I work out.
33:20 I'm really happy you emphasized this. Too much coaching says always get to front no matter what. Last week I was being "coached"(in the annoying way) by a player at my same(or lower) skill tell me I should never be in the middle but I explained to him that I was transitioning based on our hits and the opponent's position. Other side was up front and getting high balls to drive, I stayed middle/back to give myself a chance to defend, he stayed up and got destroyed. There are SO many high-level tips in here that any 4.0 needs to know to get to 4.5 and above, I loved it
Hey! I signed up for a pb league a month ago, having not played since high school literally 20 years ago. I've been practicing for the past month 4-5 times a week 1.5hrs+ with lots of drilling from your videos and shorts. My partner and I played round 2 of our 3.0 league last night going undefeated both weeks (10-0) in games! Thanks for all the videos. Keep up the great work. We already think we should have joined the 4.0 league!
Stop and split step when ball goes over net. Hell, I didn't know that. Ball's going by me while I'm still running forward. Can't wait to incorporate this. Good stuff Tanner, thank you.
I'm 3.7ish and this was really helpful to me. Also crazy seeing him confirm a few intuitive gameplay choices I've been making, but I also saw many things I had learned from other youtubers, like when to reset straight instead of continuing to cross dink.
Incredible performance and abundance of knowledge being shared I love it. Thank you thank you. 36yrs of tennis 🎾 and converting knowledge with the NVZ is becoming clearer because of your help. You Rock 💪😊👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Great video Tanner! I am going to try to apply some of these concepts you explained (especially your thoughts on aggressive and strategic dinking), then I will likely watch this video again in a month to remind myself of what else I need to apply to my game.
Very helpful. Thank you. Congrats on the win. Peter is actually a 5.7 ....can't believe Andrew is a 6.0. Augie Ge just made 6.0 and blows this away. Maybe East Coast is different.
Am glad you're doing these. I come from tennis doubles and most of the pickleball videos I saw were too basic. I was not learning but now I am. Gracias🙏
Thanks for the comments on when to split step. I play twice a week with various skill levels, and this commentary provides me with techniques to improve my skills. I've been wondering how to play with a partner who is a lefty on the court. I'm a righty, and this video gave me a good idea.
Love this. Always love your videos. I watch your channel and shorts more than any other channel. Getting your thoughts and strategies in game play is invaluable for me. Congrats on the win! Your acceleration in the sport is incredible!
Really enjoying analysis of your games, please do as many of those that you can. Learning lots. I also like your short/60 sec tutorials & longer tutorials. Keep up the good work!
Great analysis. It's always nice to see breakdowns of higher level play. One thing that didn't work well was whenever you said "I need to move over here..." etc while pointing to yourself in the room since you are facing opposite the viewer.
Your breakdowns are really great. I'm significantly below your level but you do a good job of pointing out shots/tactics/approaches that might improve anyone at any level. Solid.
Again an excellent video, high level game analysis is super helpful for us to see the subtleties of decision making , court positioning and patience as play develops. The timing and importance of the split step was demonstrated throughout this video and is something I continue to struggle with and your videos keep reinforcing the importance. Thanks for posting and helping all of us. BTW your Under 60 second vids are Great !!!
Great video - got to watch this match in person and was picking up on some things from just watching a higher level of play. Great insight on the video identifying different patterns and things to look for!
This video is the best training video I have ever seen. Would love more of them. Also great to see you using the paddle positions you teach in a real match.
What helped me calming my feet in transition (earlier split stepping both up and back) is learning to point my paddle tip at the floor to anticipate making a dig. Having enough leg separation also helps fielding the ball just in front of my toes.
Tanner, Again great comentary! I love your play and then breakdown of how the point was played(the good and the bad). Thia stoppage of play allows us students time to see and understand and digest the point. Too many videos miss this breakdown of points. Again, thankyou
That was absolutely fantastic. I REALLY like that you showed us the rally, stopped at critical moments and then went back in slo mo. Your point breakdown was also so helpful. I've only watched your "60 seconds of less" shorts and many of the regular shot videos. This was the first game breakdown and I just loved it. Also, appreciate your honest approach when you made mistakes in judgment. I saw you play singles in Newport recently and notice how athletic you are. So yea, a pleasure to watch you for more reasons that just your PB IQ. Yummy. 🙂
It took me two days to watch all of this match and I learned so much. Great work here Tanner, you are doing a great job on all of your socials. I really appreciate your passion and humility for sharing what you've learned. Also congrats to you and your partner. That was a well played match. All excellent players.
Thanks for this content Tanner. I am still quite new to the sport (around 5 months). l I am relatively competent and all the type of shots, but I still have loads to learn on the tactical side, I learned so much from this video alone!
Yes, the transition is the land of opportunity! I have been following your advice and split stepping earlier than before; it has helped me see the bigger picture with my ability to place the ball against my opponents.
Already shared with my partner. Thanks. So many take aways. I always thought split step just before they hit but just over the net makes a lot more sense. Also moving dinks around. So great to see how that works to cause pop ups. Also enjoyed your backhand cross court dink rallies. I am working on proper paddle position like you show and better lateral movement. Love your content. Keep it going!
This was great Tanner, nice work! I've been starting to score Erne's off my out of the air dinks now. I'm righty and pulled off a backhand redirect dink to their backhand and did a really clean backhand Erne on right side. What made it work is the out of air lack of time for the other side.
Hey bro great breakdown. To add to your end comment about moving to the line to quickly, never be in a hurry to loose the point. Meaning, you don’t have to always get to the kitchen as quickly as possible. Especially if you’re trying to take a ball while your feet are still moving. Like you said the whole video, once the ball bounces on your opponents side, stop and split step.
Excellent video as usual. Split step early Move dinks around so they don’t get comfortable which leads to more pop ups. Simple but effective and so useful.
This was great! Getting good video is pretty hard but just about any video is better than none, so that video quality is more than fine and easy to learn from. Also, for reviewing video on RUclips, I recommend using keyboard left and right arrows to go forward and back in the video. The default is 15 second jumps, but you can change that to 5 seconds. You can also quickly go to 2x speed by holding the spacebar.
Hey Tanner nice vid as always, just some feedback - I don't know if you edited the video that you're reviewing but the end clip points seem to cut off very quickly after the point is scored. In your review you're often having to rewind back and it's a bit disorientating. I'd suggest a bit more breathing room after the point is scored in the base edit. Also maybe running the playback at slightly slower at .75 could be easier to follow and explain for viewers. I did notice you did that at the start but then turned it off. keep up the good work :)
Excellent job Tanner, all the points you broke down had such variety! I totally agree with the chess part of the match-it works. Being aware of your repetitive tendencies allows you to fake the next same shot by deceiving your opponents with body language.
1. I'm not sure viewers appreciate all the time and attention you spend editing out the between points chunks. (I used to coach tennis and I'd be up in the wee hours editing.) Good work, Tanner! 2. Your breakdown vids are excellent. Keep 'em coming, please. 3. I gotta "check my ego" to move up a level. (I have this, "Yeah, but I have better hands than my contemporaries so I can get away with split-stepping later" tape in my head. I need to BURN that tape!) Your videos surely shine a bright light on the areas I need to improve. 4. When I was coaching, I regularly encouraged my players to play the percentage shots; not to go for the glory shots. Your breakdowns make me realize I need to apply my own advice.
This was awesome!!! There some things I new already but some key things that I knew but never seen anyone truly explain the why in detail. Speedup setups throughout the match along with split step before ball crosses net I love those!!!!
DANG YOU'RE GOOD Tanner!! I understand what you said in another vid to answer a banger with a banger shot. These guys can hit hard a lot, but I wouldn't call them bangers because they have a good soft game.
Loved the video; replays; and narrative play-by-play! Learned a lot. (*Now IF I can just learn how to hit a consistent low forehand return & low forehand volley.) 😁😁
Wow - I learned a lot from this one. That's really interesting about split-stepping when you need to (when they're about to hit it), even if you're not at the kitchen line yet. And I'm so hungry to try that play where you do a cross-dink pattern and then dink down the line to set up an Erne. Some of your flicks from below the net look like they take immense wrist power; I'm afraid to shred my arm if I try it. But one thing I'll definitely try is letting some of their speed-ups go out early in the match, to send a signal early on.
I play a lot of pickleball and watch many pro videos, but I have to say, I always learn something from you. Your game analyses are particularly informative. Keep up the great work!
Yes I agree! He explains it so well!
I was hoping he would do a live game showing us!! Thanks Tanner 👌
So generous of you! Thank you so much for writing this :)
Will do soon!
@@tanner.pickleball I'm a bit surprised by your DUPR rating. I think you play like 6.0 level or higher.
💯 me too!
You can tell you don't have much of an ego when analyzing the game. You're very humble and positive. Keep up the videos! I learn a ton from you
Thanks Steve!
This is the best play breakdown that I have seen. I also like the pace that you go through each point without talking the point to death. Pickleball strategy videos are hard to find. Very well done. I'm tagging this and will watch it every so often as a refresher.
Thanks Dan! So Generous of you, I’ll keep ‘em coming!

Facts ,don't stop helping us Tanner!! I learn so much watching you!
Such a generous message!! Thank you so much for the support!
Love it!!

Thank you!! Glad you got something out of it :)

That's definitely annoying! I'm glad this video helped clear some things up for you!

Absolutely! Glad it helped :)
Only if the ball is going to an opponent in the kitchen? If opponent is at baseline, you can split step a bit later?
Easily the best RUclips channel for people 4.0+ trying to get to 5.0+
IQ-raiser for sure! Thank you Tanner and keep up the great work!
Wow, thanks!

Thankyou Tanner, great content, I love how passionate you are about coaching and raising the level of our game!
My pleasure!
Very helpful. Thank you. Congrats on the win. Peter is actually a 5.7 ....can't believe Andrew is a 6.0. Augie Ge just made 6.0 and blows this away. Maybe East Coast is different.
It is all different depending on opponents!
Loved it! The 3rd breakdown video that I watched. Congrats and keep on keepin’ on
Thanks so much for the support!
Am glad you're doing these. I come from tennis doubles and most of the pickleball videos I saw were too basic. I was not learning but now I am. Gracias🙏
Glad you like them!
Thanks for the comments on when to split step. I play twice a week with various skill levels, and this commentary provides me with techniques to improve my skills. I've been wondering how to play with a partner who is a lefty on the court. I'm a righty, and this video gave me a good idea.
That’s awesome to hear!! Glad you’re putting it to use.
Love this. Always love your videos. I watch your channel and shorts more than any other channel. Getting your thoughts and strategies in game play is invaluable for me. Congrats on the win! Your acceleration in the sport is incredible!
Awesome! Thank you!
Awesome review! These types of videos going over a match are much more helpful than discussing one particular tip.
Glad it was helpful!
Tanner, these are great. I learn so much. Thank you.
Thanks!
Really enjoying analysis of your games, please do as many of those that you can. Learning lots. I also like your short/60 sec tutorials & longer tutorials. Keep up the good work!

This video is the best training video I have ever seen. Would love more of them. Also great to see you using the paddle positions you teach in a real match.
Thanks! I will focus on that!
A few months of play in pickleball I have found this type of video very helpful. Thank you very much❤please make more of these🎉
More to come!
Great video. Absolutely love the breakdown. I need to start doing this with my own matches. Thank you, Tanner!
Yep my pleasure!
Awesome breakdown. I learned more from watching this video (and your other videos) than any $85 hour lesson.
Wow!! Thanks!
Learned a good amount about effective split step timing. Can’t wait to take it to the courts!
Let’s go!
Me too!
What helped me calming my feet in transition (earlier split stepping both up and back) is learning to point my paddle tip at the floor to anticipate making a dig. Having enough leg separation also helps fielding the ball just in front of my toes.
Love that - totally works!

Glad you enjoyed it!
Great instructional video here Tanner. Thanks for breaking it down for us!
Yep!
Congratulations on your Gold Medal. You play the way you preach, love that. I wish all my partners had watched this video.
I appreciate that!
This is one of the better videos I’ve seen from you. Well done.
Thanks!
Great stuff as always. Keep em coming! Being a fellow lefty, I especially enjoy your content. Thanks again!
Congrats on the win, btw!
Thanks Wild!

Thanks so much Ginny!! Yes i love doing these and am glad you learned something.
Wow. Just wow. Incredible video. I apply everything I learn from these match analysis videos. It is the fastest way to level up! Thank you! 😊
:)

Thanks Space!
Great analysis and commentary on an excellent match! I learn so much from your videos, thank you!
Thank you for stopping by :)
quickly becoming my fav pb channel
So nice!
All your training videos made me see so many things in this match. Thanks.
Glad to hear it!
Tanner, great insights on the match. Helps players to think their shots beforehand….
Yes thanks Frank!
Absolutely love the videos. Very informative, concise, and definitely raises my PB IQ. Keep them coming!
Thanks!!
Excellent insights, grazie! Especially appreciated the 2 main things you learned at the end. Clear and concise.
Glad it was helpful!
Yes, the transition is the land of opportunity! I have been following your advice and split stepping earlier than before; it has helped me see the bigger picture with my ability to place the ball against my opponents.
Thanks lets go!
Great episode Tanner! I think you should do recaps of the Pro games. No one is doing that on YT that I know and it’s great to learn from your insight!
I love that idea!!
These are great! It is so helpful to look into the mind of an experienced player to see the "chess" play out. Keep them coming.
Thanks, will do!
Thank you so much Donne!
Well done. You are helping me learn how to play better. Keep up the great work
Glad to hear it!
Really great commentary! Thank you for creating these - super helpful!
TY orbit!
This was great Tanner, nice work! I've been starting to score Erne's off my out of the air dinks now. I'm righty and pulled off a backhand redirect dink to their backhand and did a really clean backhand Erne on right side. What made it work is the out of air lack of time for the other side.
Love to hear that - my fav shot!
I love these videos! I played early this morning and now want to get out there again and think about all of this!!!
Go for it!
Well said!
Loved it. Thanks, Tanner. More like this one, please!
You got it!
This is a great breakdown! You should do more of these!
More coming :)
This is some great game analysis! Thanks so much for the content!
Glad you enjoy it!
Excellent video as usual.
Split step early
Move dinks around so they don’t get comfortable which leads to more pop ups.
Simple but effective and so useful.
Yep!
Beautiful Breakdown !!!!! We want more!!!!!!😀
More to come!
I am a beginner and I learn a lot from this breakdown, thank you.
You're very welcome!
Great video. I’m still pretty new and learning. You pointed out a ton that I need to work on.
Thanks, keep practicing and you’ll get there!
Good call did not know this hahah!
Thanks Ill work on it!
Love these tips! I will try to remember and practice these tips in my PB journey
Please do!
Thanks Tanner. I will be sharing this video with others.
Thanks for sharing!
Love the analysis. Keep them coming!
Thanks!
Love these videos such a learning experience. Well done.
:)
One of my favorite videos, with super helpful analysis.
Thanks!
Excellent job Tanner, all the points you broke down had such variety! I totally agree with the chess part of the match-it works. Being aware of your repetitive tendencies allows you to fake the next same shot by deceiving your opponents with body language.
Absolutely Jason!
I hear you on the editing, I’m trying to get better at that! And absolutely, thank you very much!!
This was awesome!!! There some things I new already but some key things that I knew but never seen anyone truly explain the why in detail. Speedup setups throughout the match along with split step before ball crosses net I love those!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very helpful: timing for split steps and summary at the end!
Yeppers!
Love this analysis type of video, keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!
Loving that you are doing these types of videos!! This is so awesome!! Really appreciate this amazing content!
:)
The best is your summary. Thank you
:)
I’ve learned a lot from this video. Just knowing when to split step and when to attack are two tips that I’m going to use next time I play!
Love that!
Congrats Tanner. Thank you for doing this. This is going to help so many people. Me and my husband included.😊
Love it!
Solid video bro. Good analysis on shot selection. I love when an ill-advised speed up gets punished!
Thanks Mike!
These breakdowns are the most helpful videos on pickleball. Would love to see more! Even breakdowns of lower level players would be cool.
More to come!
Great commentary and instruction, thanks for a great video.
Glad it was helpful!
Great analysis and pointing out the specifics reasons why things happen the way it did.
Thanks!
❤ the advice on split step timing.
Congrats on the 🥇 Tanner❗️
Thanks!
Love this, taking notes, thank you! When you described yourself as going "bat shat crazy" I cracked up. 😆
Hahaha
Great video, thanks all the tips. IMO, the best on RUclips.
Appreciate that!!
DANG YOU'RE GOOD Tanner!! I understand what you said in another vid to answer a banger with a banger shot. These guys can hit hard a lot, but I wouldn't call them bangers because they have a good soft game.
Good point, they bang hard from the baseline!
Loved this video as always Tanner! Thanks for sharing your play
So nice of you!
Love these longer breakdowns so much!
Glad you like them!
Fantastic video.
Fyi, I've never seen anyone discuss good and bad Erne setups. That would be fun for me to dig into more.
Thx!
Good call!
Loved the commentary!
Thanks!

Thanks for this comment! I appreciate the insight, the flick is intensive on the forearm!
Great video to learn from! You do the best at these :)
Glad you like them!
