Mike Skinner's recordings as the Streets marked the first attempt to add a degree of social commentary to Britain's party-hearty garage/2-step (and later grime) movement. Skinner was initially an outsider in the garage scene. Although his initial recordings appeared on Locked On, the premiere source for speed garage and 2-step from 1998 to the end of the millennium, he listened first to hip-hop, then house and jungle.
The Streets biggest hits include “Blinded By The Lights”, “Dry Your Eyes”, “Don’t Mug Yourself”, “Fit But You Know It”, “Let’s Push Things Forward” and “Has It Come To This”. The iconic Streets catalogue also includes the albums “Original Pirate Material”, “A Grand Don’t Come For Free”, “The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living”, “Everything Is Borrowed” and “Computers and Blues”.

Lyrics:
Turn left up the street
Nothing but grey concrete and deadbeats
Grab something to eat, Maccy D's or KFC?
Only one choice in the city, done voicing my pity
Now let's get to the nitty gritty
Tune reminds me of my first E
Pull out unique, still sixteen and feeling horny
Point the sky and feel free
See here people are all equal, smiles are front and behind me
Swim in the deep blue sea, corn fields sway lazily
All smiles, all easy
"Where ya from, what's you on and what's your story?"
Mesmerising tones, rising pianos, this is my zone, so stop cloning
Pick paper, scissors or stone, 'cause me and you are the same
I known you all my life, I don't know your name
The name's European Bob, sorted, anyway
We'll have a dance now, see ya later
"Pleased to meet ya", "Likewise, a pleasure"
We were just standing there, minding our own
We went on and on (We all smile, we all sing)
The weak become heroes and the stars align
(We all sing, we all sing, think)
We were just standing there, minding our own
We went on and on (We all smile, we all sing)
The weak become heroes and the stars align
(We all sing, we all sing, think)
The night slowly fades and goes slow motion
All the commotion becomes floating emotions
Same piano loops over, arms wave, eyes roll back
And jaws fall open, see in soft focus
Chatting to this bloke in the toilets
Dizzy new heights, blinded by the lights
These people are for life
It's all back to his place at the end of the night
Yo, they could settle wars with this
If only they will, imagine the world's leaders on pills
And imagine the morning after, wars causing disaster
Don't talk to me, I don't know ya, but this ain't tomorrow
For now, I still love ya, hours fly over
Sail around, diamonds and pearls, never seen so many fit girls
Discover new worlds, look at my watch, can't focus
Last two hours are lost, every move fills me with lust
All of life's problems, I just shake off, yo, mad little events happen
Things might pan out in a few blue maidens are like the toilets
Big beefy bouncers out to reveal us
Geezers on E's and first timers, kids on wiz, darlings on Charlie
All comes together for this party
All races, many faces from places you've never heard of
"Where you from, what's your name and what you want?"
Sing to the words, flex to the fat ones
The tribal drums, the sun's rising
We all smile, we all sing
Then the girl in the café taps me on the shoulder
I realise five years went by and I'm older
Memories smoulder, winter's colder
But that same piano loops over and over and over
The road shines and the rain washes away
Same Chinese take-away selling shit in a tray
It's dark all 'round, I walk down. same sights, same sounds
New beats, though, solid concrete under my feet
No surprises, no treats
The world stands still as my mind slushes 'round
The washing up bowl in my crown
My life's been up and down since I walked from that crowd
Out of respect for Johnny Walker, Paul Oakenfold, Nicky Holloway
Danny Rampling and all the people who gave us these times
And to the government, I stick my middle finger up
With regards to the Criminal Justice Bill
For all the heroes I met along the way
(We all sing, we all sing, think)
Who’s still listening to this in 2020? 👌
Common bro
I’m here
great memories. UK early 2000's. loved it.
mate, every month since "the days"
Yep 🤙🏻
this is london to me. 100%. This track is the reason I moved to london and survived in this city for 8 years.
I'm 33, and feel so privileged to have been 'old enough' for the era of Mike Skinner and The Streets.
Nick Hards I agreee
I'm 53 and still play the remix in my set total Banger.
lol, i guess. but the rave era he is talking about you missed.
@@robinhooduk8255 yeah I'm the same age as the first poster. We were the nu rave generation in our early 20s. Justice, Simian Mobile Disco, Soulwax, etc. This song is more about 90s early 00s clubbing. We didn't really have raves but we had some warehouse parties in North America in the late 00s.
Same here, mate. Same age as you, different country, though. Somehow made me study English and become an English foreign language teacher, haha.
This brings me back to such a happy time. I love The Streets. I remember driving around London on a hot summer day with this blasting out of the window. Mike looks so young here.
He looks like a baby compared to now, probably the same as everyone, including me, who loved The Streets at that time in history.
@@DZ-fk7ji Wish we had a time machine cause I would love to go back to those times :)
My mate Mel loved emptying ferrets to this song. RIP Mel. You're caretaking in heaven now. xx
This song makes me reminisce on every college and uni sesh or night out

Yeah I know me too, not uni though just more like every night out in my 20's almost! Lol x
@@scotgirl778 "anything that paws or hoofs" well I guess that's my catfish out then
Still a classic, great times.
I remember about 20 years ago waiting in the car while my mum went into some shop. Original Pirate Material came on the radio & it instantly hit me, & ever since then I’ve loved that song this song.. the whole album is a masterpiece.
If you were there in the 90's rave scene, this song says it all.
I remember listening to Mike skinner back when I was 18, used to listen to the streets on repeat.
I’m 35 now, and this came up randomly in my suggestions, I haven’t listen to any of his music for years…. but hearing this again, it felt like I’d gone back in time and I was 18 again.
I'm addicted to this ,such unique writing and vision
Mike skinner at his best , dude is og music artist
First comment on this legendary tune! I loved this since I was 9 now I’m 25 and can understand what this was actually about 😂
same. my parents listened to the streets
That Guy hahaha they were high
You can't truly understand unless you were dropping pills when this came out.
Or maybe it was just me high for 10 years lol.
I'm going to get some and flashback
LegoManLavinder 😂
Fuck! I was 18 or 19 the first time i heard this, I´m 31 now and it´s still very relevant!
Today I went out for a walk and it's been the most spring-like day I've seen so early on in February. I felt like hitting the record shop cause I had no record that matched such a powerful weather. Once there, the clerk saw I was looking at this album and offered to put it on... The way it lights up a room is brilliant.
I chose the "Lamb" selftitled eventually, but next time I might consider The Streets, for sure...
Need to listen to the album again
nothing makes me remember growing up better than listening to The Streets. . KRO you guys represented Brum well !!
"This ain't tomorrow, for now I still love you"
This is hard af
36 and Mike now takes me back in time... ❤
Song came out when I was in my 20s. Now middle aged and...yeah, the ending hits pretty damn hard.
How have I never seen this video? Captures the vibe perfectly. Was a child through 2 Tone and early hip hop. In London clubs and fields as a teen during Acid House and Mike Skinners first album up there with any of that. Top stuff
One of the best songs ever!
still here in 2023 the streets will never be forgotten for their input and style in the UK music scene they are pioneers
Genius! True original.
All the videos for this album are just what they should be.
Zeit los, danke dafür. ❤️
This song makes me so nostalgic of going out clubbing etc.
Tune reminds me of my first E 👌🏻🤟🏻

Jus epic …. can relate so much … going raving & the rest lol 😂
We All Smile , We All Sing ....;)
Now that I'm older, I finally understand this song.....fuck. "I got tapped on the shoulder"
i didnt know any of there other songs until i had my little girl. this is my happy place.. stepping away from the keyboard now lol. does anyone know what there track is called when hes getting older looking back and what its like ?? i heard it once cant find it.

@Beeblebrox One thank you! Same to you bro!
This one hits hard man, beautiful song
The same piano has been looping over and over, to this day, always will.
This is the greatest celebration of rave life ever. This tune is so powerful it really speaks to anyone who is a live music/festival/club person reaching the end of their 20s.

Well this may shock. I’m 67 and caught clubbing in the 90’s. My mate was Tony Wilson, Factory Records. They were the best years of my life and this tune echoes them. Superb lyrics, urban poetry.
@@CD89999 jeez, where do I start? They were wonderful days, Chris. The music and the people were pioneering.
Got to say though I bloody loved getting over to Sheffield and spending time with the Crasher kids in Gatecrasher. Scott Bond on the decks banging out sublime trance.
I started as a Mod riding a Lambretta SX200 listening to Tamla and Northern Soul in the 70’s, The Twisted Wheel and Wigan Casino and moved on to jazz funk in the ‘80’s.
When acid house and Chicago house hit we were all blown away and then ended up in Cream.
I’ve got tickets for James Zabiela in Liverpool in November but after that may have to hang up the glow sticks on the Zimmer frame.
A lifetime of wonderful music has meant a lifetime of meeting wonderful people.
I’ve reached for the lasers in Centrofly, NYC with Roger Sanchez on the decks and seen the sun come up on the terrace @ Space, Ibiza whilst Sasha provided the soundtrack.
I have been privileged.

Can't believe this album came out 18 years ago! I'm 31 now but still remember my mate in the year above at school playing it. Great album.
'my life has been up and down since i walked from that crowd' how true mr Mike Skinner
Looking back now, to my pill-popping dayz, they were actually good harmless times. Everyone loved up and enjoying themselves. Now what we got? Zombie Spice heads, no thank you.
Still plenty of good raves
37 now, still feel like a pilled up teenager listening to this one. Great tune.
we 40 now :) cheers
17 year old American living in Aberdeen, Scotland, when this released. Best of times, best of friends, legendary memories. Catching a wave of the purest nostalgia as I listen at 38.

"Only one choice in the city, done voicing my pity, now let's get to the nitty gritty..."
44 year old here, off to see the Streets tonight in Perth, Australia. Been a fan for 22+ years. Skinner is a voice of our generation. Respect.
I left a comment earlier praising the quality of this music. It is indeed urban poetry.
I have recently retired from teaching troubled lads in a PRU.
I was privileged to be one lad’s best man at his wedding. Unfortunately I stood at one of my lad’s graveside, he was out of reach and took 8 bullets to the chest.
I am now recovering from surgery for cancer but would have used this in my classroom.
Urban poetry, indeed.
Legend keep going 💪
was one the few American students at my school that was up on this track and album back in 03...man...so much love for his music
Me too! Jumped on this as soon as I heard it. One of the greatest
I was living in Virginia, in the Navy at the time 22, this was my JAM!! 😭😭😭
it would remind me of the Summer of '00 in the Mediterranean. Had this whole CD on repeat
lmao , i was friends with DJ Sumo in one of the biggest clubs in new orleans when this shit came out , he played it. fucking school? wtf
Relatable with a twist. One of many Americans at an international school overseas and one of the very few who had this tape on repeat in the Spring of 02.' Best of times rampaging through Aberdeen.
I used to listen to this with a spliff when I'd got home from a nights clubbing and still off my barnet on pills.
Ditto.....apart from when my daughter was born some of the best times of my life 🎶
Me two. That same piano loops over and over and over....
Same here. I'm 47 and refused to move on from the rave scene of the early 90s and still thinking I had it in the early 2000s (What a Muppet lol) it was those moments of quiet contemplation and reflection when I was on an MDMA comedown that was the turning point. We're all at the mercy of time really and nothing ever stays the same. But very contented nowadays I have several kids and nephews who I adore and a good job. Our kids/nephews/nieces will have their golden years just like we did :-)
Amen to that one brother

This was filmed in the works nightclub in Kingston, great track, I was only like 16 years late coming across this track, didn't know it even existed, I just used to listen to the 'original pirate material' track, the choice of words are excellent, something we can all relate to especially if your brought up in the 1990s/2000s. Last shot is on the Richmond road looking towards Kingston near the Isha Bar.

This song is timeless
This song is a very sad tearful one though what describes is like you let your time go by, went off did the wrong things or joined the wrong crowds, when you could have been doing the things you wanted like Adventure, travel the world, go to college college party’s instead to get more friendships, but you let that past by with a horrible up and down life and that song just brings me to tears when I first listened to it it’s not happy and pretty it’s full of sad emotions that will teach tho the hard facts of life when you got into trouble or kicked out of school/college and you miss out on those things.
