  • From the 1994 Album: "Between a Rock and a Hard Place"...(Click "show more" for artist info)...
Artifacts is a hip hop group consisting of El Da Sensei, Tame One and DJ Kaos. They hail from Newark, New Jersey and made underground music that paid homage to the four elements of hip hop. The Artifacts' most popular single "Wrong Side of Da Tracks" paid special homage to graffiti art, as they were graffiti artists themselves.
They released their first album, Between a Rock and a Hard Place on October 27, 1994. Well received by underground hip hop audiences, it featured b-boy and graffiti themes. The album's beats were produced by Buckwild (from the DITC crew) and T-Ray (from the Soul Assassins crew). The Artifacts' second album, That's Them was released on April 15, 1997. It featured similar material, but it did not receive as much recognition as their debut effort. The Artifacts split soon after the release of this second album.
Tame One and El Da Sensei have both continued to release music as solo artists. In 2003, Tame One joined the Weathermen, an underground rap group including Cage Kennylz, Camu Tao, Aesop Rock, and El-P. Soon after joining the Weathermen, Tame One and Cage released the album Waterworld under the name Leak Bros. In 2009, Tame ONe collaborated with another member of the Definitive Jux label, releasing the album Parallel Uni-Verses with Del the Funky Homosapien. El Da Sensei has released a number of solo albums and collaborated with the Polish rap group The Returners in 2008, as well as East Coast-based group, The Immortals Project in 2009.
In August 2009 at the Rock Steady Crew Anniversary Weekend in Newark, New Jersey, Artifacts briefly reunited during a performance by El Da Sensei. According to Tame One the duo have not reconciled their differences but when he heard the horn riff which introduces "Wrong Side of Da Tracks", he felt like performing it. The impromptu reunion has not led to any official reunion.
On August 2, 2010 at The Rock Steady Crew 33rd Anniversary Celebration in Newark, New Jersey, both El Da Sensei and Tame One along with DJ KAOS performed officially as The Artifacts. They performed several songs from their respective catalogs as well as Artifacts material at this show. It is confirmed that they are indeed back together and in the process of collaborating on a new Artifacts album.

If you were a teenager during these times you experienced the last pure form of the culture where different sections of hip hop still intersected. Rap and graf. People were still dancing . Dj's would still be a part of the group. And producing beats and digging for record. Then the 2000's hit.

I was alive when this track first dropped, but I was also too young to remember. I didn't learn the meaning of this track until I discovered the thrill of the graff scene during my jr. high and high school years. I have to say that those were some of my best years on this planet. The adrenaline I felt every time I caught a tag, or fill on the streets of NYC were my biggest accomplishments then. Having people tell me that they saw me up was more flattering than a girl telling me she was into me. This song right here was on my daily rotation because I related to the story being told. It brings me back. "Let the toys bring the noise, me and my boys are gonna diss em." Word. Get up!

I wouldn't say "I'm proud"... I would say I was lucky enough (I don't if I should thank my parents or a superior Spiritual Force, or both) to grow up in the '70 & '80.

I graduated high school in 96 across the river from Newark NJ and I skated for Shut NYC back then, bombed EVERY night for most of the decade and went to probably 4,000 New York and New Jersey Hardcore shows. The 90's are a bubble of time that all the great memories I have and where all the crazy stories come from.

I'm a white kid? Maybe, but If you're a grown man, then shame on you. My message was peace, and you came with your hysterical shit, if you know nothing about TDE, Pro Era, OF, Flatbush Z., Branson, Brown, Mensa, Chance.. then you know shit about actual Hip-Hop. No one mentioned Lil Wayne except you, you stupid ass.
