Another gimmicky but real broken mon you missed was purrloin and/or liepard with the 'divecats' strat. For any one who doesn't know what that is, this evo line has the ability prankster and learn the non-damaging move assist, which performs a random move from other mons in your party, with a few exceptions. You can then build a team consisting of the move dive and other moves that assist can't perform. In gen 5, if you equipped the iron ball item to half purrloin/liepard's speed, it would be able to use assist with priority and use dive before anyone could move and reemerge after everyone has moved the next turn, essentially having an invincibility strat with a very small amount of counterplay, such as using the move surf instead of literally any other WAY more competitively viable water-type moves, as most teams did not account for it due to its relatively low usage rates. Since gen 6 assist can now no longer perform 2-turn damaging moves and the strat only lives on as legend.
@@williamdrum9899the real crazy part is that it would have been great even without grassy glide, because it has a great movepool and pure grass is better than grass fairy, making him the better grassy terrain mon
There are several entries where a mon was responsible for nerfing its own signature ability, which are IMO bad entries. Entries I miss are: - Politoed: it was utterly broken with Drizzle in gen5 and he is definitely the primarily reason why weather abilities no longer summon perma weather. - Liepard: He introduced the Prankster + Assist combo which was its own can of worms. Because of him, Assist could no longer call moves like Fly in gen6, and the move was axed in gen8. - Mewtwo/Tauros: the poster children of RBY's broken mechanics.
I agree that a signature ability being nerfed isn't as interesting of an entry. Those are some good ones that I missed, so thanks for pointing that out and I will look into including those if I make a part 2!
Politoed is not the reason why though. It was to give reason to use primal Groudon and Kyogre, making perma weather an exclusive thing for them. It’s kinda like protean in current gen, being nerf because they needed a reason to those pokemon to terrastalize.
@@loupe500this is just not true. Weather dominated competitive Gen 5 so both Politoed and Ninetales are to blame for the nerf (with the sand setters to an extend). @@wreckitmike5213 ok, but it literally happened in the gens they needed to happen because of generational mechanics. “Weather dominated gen 5” is true only to a certain extent. Weather dominated singles, and so did Protean. Generational mechanics nerfing certain mons is just a fact.
I believe steel types were firstly stripped of their resistances to ghost and dark as a general balance change with the addition of fairies, and aegislash was able to be made as a result.
yeah i suspect fairies were a much bigger influence as steel was already the best type in the game and getting another resist just makes it all the more powerful.
@@wumbology72 I assume gamefreak balances top-down style in most cases, looking at overall type performance, balancing accordingly, and subsequently moving down to items, abilities, and Pokémon respectively.
Gothitelle got Shadow Tag nerfed, Ghost types were given the ability to switch out the generation after a real Shadow Tag user not named Wob got introduced likely because of how Perish Trap was a VGC strategy
Theres also greninja where both of its other abilities were nerfed in gen 9 (though protean was maybe more because of cinderace and meowscarada) There is also Zoroark who may or may not be a big reason why team previews became a thing starting in gen 5
I believe that you could've added Metagross with Aegislash as due to Metagross being a Steel-Psychic type it was also benefitting from the Dark and Ghost resistances. Moreover, it also benefitted from the addition of the Fairy type and had a great Mega Evolution, making it equally responsible for changing game mechanics
Steel/Fairy is pretty much the same as Steel/Ghost prior to the Steel nerf with only 2 weaknesses in Fire & Ground, & 11 resistances & immunities total. Steel/Flying also comes close.
i feel like including a signature ability's change (mega kang's parental bond) isn't exactly the point of what you're trying to discuss.. Yeah, it got nerfed because it was op. That's not an enitre game mechanic, though. Something else that might fit better would be the way weather worked as more pokemon got access to weather-summoning abilities, and the complete reliance on them in the meta for some. Aegislash was a great example as well, and it could have also been worth mentioning the change in how "recharge" moves worked post gen 1, or why dark & steel type were introduced because of mewtwo, etc.
Weather is definitely something I missed talking about in this video, so I will definitely look into that and other mechanic changes that weren't just signature abilities if I make a part 2!
Another pokemon you missed is Excadrill who was absolutely destructive with sand rush as well as Politoed with Drizzle that it caused weather casting abilities to no longer be permanent in Gen 6.
I feel like agislash is a stretch, because it came out in the same gen and we have no way of knowing if that was the reason for the change or the steel typing in general.
Did you consider Mewtwo for this list? Because it was most likely the biggest reason for multiple changes between Gen 1 and Gen 2 (although some of these are not just because of Mewtwo but for the sake of balance). -Steel and Dark Type (+ Bug and Ghost not being awful anymore) -Special Stat being split into SpAtk and SpDef -Crit Rate being based on the Speed Stat (also because high-crit rate moves were almost guaranteed to crit) -Moves like Blizzard and Thunder being 90% accurate (Blizzard apparently had a 30% freeze chance in the Japanese Version) and also Ice hitting Fire for neutral damage lol -Freeze being a quasi-instakill -Hyper Beam not forcing you to recharge when KO'ing a Pokemon Psychic's SpDef drop rate -Stat Overflow (when an effective Stat surpassed 1024 it got rolled back to basically 0, for example 1000 would roll back to 1) Also another contender for this would be Tauros, since he also abused the Crit Rate, Hyper Beam and Blizzard or maybe Exeggutor/Jynx for abusing Sleep (it lasted 1-7 turns and waking up took a turn itself). Although these Pokemon didn't "contribute" much to the mechanics being changed, i feel like just because multiple Pokemon got their signature abilities nerfed that's not exactly a change in game mechanics.
