I believe Gary had a sweet life and enjoyed your kindness. She seemed to love her spa day and your gentle treatment. All any of us have is today, and who knows the future? Thanks for sharing!
I’m so sorry for your loss. You bathing him was the cutest thing ever. Man why are the cutest things always the most vulnerable? I’m in grievance right now since we also lost a silkie to some neighbors dogs, and even worse, we saved it too late and saw it dying. It was our only silkie, all are others are regular chickens. So yeah... that brought me here. I truly hope we can be reunited with our pets in silkie heaven, or if you don’t believe in that, then at least we know they’re no longer in physical pain. Sigh... life is really tough. I wish you and all your other livestock the best, looks like you have a thriving chicken coop going on there. All the best !
Awww! So sorry to hear about Gary! She seemed like a sweet bird. I can't believe how mellow she was when you were washing and drying her. I was expecting that to be a chaotic scene. I'm glad you still posted the video. -All the best ~ Theresa
Brought tears to my eyes hearing you lost your silkie.. Hugs...it's hard when you become attached to your chickens..My chickens free range and a coyote got my Mr Roo right on our front lawn and he was the size of a Turkey..I loved my Mr Roo so much I cried for days.
Oh my goodness, I loved the video showing how sweet and calm she was with a bath, she was so trusting of you. Then the end just made my heart break over the loss of your sweet girl. I am so sorry, it is heartbreaking to lose a pet because they are family. I'm getting one day old bantams in July and one of them is a silkie and I want to thank you for all the information you share about keeping chickens. I pray that God will heal your saddened heart and that you will find comfort knowing that you provide a wonderful life for these chickens.
I am just starting my silkie journey they are 6 weeks old and i have 5 .. losing one will hurt as they are more than just chickens.. xx we love them xx sorry for your loss .
I am so sorry for the loss. I try to remind folk to cover their chicken yards. You can buy really cheap garden netting like for pea vines at any garden stores. They are 5'x20' for about $5. My chicken yard is completely covered with 2" chicken wire. A lot more expensive but I know my chickens are safe. God Bless Joe
I just lost my white silkie this morning to a hawk! Her name was Fiona and she was beautiful. I screamed and cried when I saw the hawk take her. She will be missed 😢
Aww. I’m so sorry. Thank you for the video. She was beautiful. And your honesty about losing her i totally respect. Most of us have lost a chicken due to hawks, or other predators and it’s heartbreaking.
So Sorry, Hartbraking! She was a true supperstair, my four year loves this video. Plus it's lovely to see you and your family caring and loving your chicken. Many thanks for this beautiful video.
*discovers 1 year late* Aw nooo! I'm so sorry about Gary! I was watching the video thinking of how adorable and well behaved she was. I'm sorry to hear of her loss. ='( Thanks for the tips, though. I've been wanting to bathe my little silkie. She's got a beard, too, which gets super dirty!
I am so sorry for the loss of your Silkie Gary. I, too live in the country with Hawks. I have found that if you hang old reflective CDs in your trees around your coop and the areas that the chickens roam, it keeps the Hawks away. The reflection of the sun on the CD as it twirls, throws out a flashing light. I haven't had issues with Hawks for the last 5 years. The CD will lose its reflection over time and will need to be replaced. I hope this helps.
Sorry for your loss! I have other chickens but just purchased 2 little dirty silkies and had to bathe them. I have them in an enclosed run. Silkies are so precious. Hugs!
I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of Gary. He could see the emotion on your face trying to hold back the tears. I just about started crying myself it’s just so sad. As I was watching you bathe her I thought oh I want a white chicken soaking and then after hearing the rest of your story I decided against getting a white bird.
In an area like that it's normal to have the top fenced off too. You can still have your white chicken. Make sure that the pen as a whole is sturdy enough to keep out any foxes, coyotes, wolves, snakes, etc. Depends upon where you live.
I just subscribed to your channel. I was so sorry to see about you little Gary. Good memories. She was a lucky lil chicken to have you. Dr Bronner baths. I wiuld have never known to do that. Again our sincerest condolences. Pets steal a piece of our hearts
We only just got a chicken, we found her running around in the wild, having escaped from her owners, and we couldn’t find them,, so now we can keep her. She’s really dirty, so thankyou.
We lost our silkie chicken to a hawk just yesterday. It was very sad and heartbreaking that we couldn’t save her. The hawk had already choked and killed Koko by the time we could get to her, she had already died. RIP to all the chickens lost because of hawks.
So sorry to hear of your loosing Gary. Please let me share my tip on keeping birds away from gardens/berries and flocks. Recently I had a hawk circling so I put old cd/dvd's on poles etc making them point to the sky (laser side up) the reflection makes the birds unable to focus and will not come down. I affixed them with a piece of window caulking stringy things, they face in different directions. It's a winner and LOL it's a freebie.Good luck I love your channel.
We have tried them hanging and that didn’t work. What did work was strings above the run (this is an old video)...however that isn’t practical if they are free ranging. We may have to try the cds pointing up as we just recently lost 2 babies to a hawk. Thanks!
So sorry for your loss on Gary, we have many chickens as well and consider them part of the family. This video made me laugh and cry! Silkies are the best docile breed for sure. Looking forward to your 2017 videos!
omgosh! first I'm like ohhh, how awesome, look at her...go ahead Gary, "shake your tail feathers" girl, lol....the other chick-a-dees will be jealous, hahahaha. Then, the bad news, no more Gary! Taken...by a "fly-by" Hawk, no less! My condolences to the whole family for your loss. I just want to mention that I love how gentle you were with her in bath time, I love how the girls handled her and your Partner fed her by hand. You guys really love your pets. I felt bad to go hit the 'like' button, cause I did not like how it ended for her, but know that I loved how you handled her. Yes, I would love to see more videos like this. Thanks for sharing. Lots of love and hugs....Marissa
Great - and very sad - video. i just successfully trapped 3 white silkies that someone decided they've had enough and dropped them off on a dirt road and i just happened upon them. So now they are warm, dry and safe. i started this video to learn how to bath them, quickly got attached to your silkie and then of course the end was enlightening and sad. I have read they are susceptible to overhead predators because their eyes are partially covered. Your video was a great reminder of this sight weakness and ill do my best to protect them. Thanks for vid and inspiration!
I'm so very sorry for your loss. Gary knew she was loved! We have talked about getting chickens in the spring and doing the moveable tractor, but I don't know. My eyes are still leaking from your loss. I'm not sure I'm cut out for that kind of outcome.
I have a followup video coming out as well which is directed more at to-be-chicken owners. Chickens are worth it, but you have to expect there will be death, in all kinds of forms. She will be missed
Really sorry to hear about your hen Gary. I just started on silkies cause someone gave me a few and their a bit older and so was nice to get some info on bathing them....So...thanks for sharing good info!! I was wondering about how long it took to blow dry alternating cold/hot????
This is Anita Barger: I'm so sorry about the loss of your little Gary. That's my brothers name. I checked out your video because I'm interested in silkies. My Vet has silkies and I've heard him talk about them. The video was Great! Thank you for posting
That's amazing, I never thought a chicken would allow all that handling, let alone blow drying. She has such a little voice... oh no... just saw the end. RIP Gary
@@Guildbrookfarm yeah I don't watch TV very much. Using only in passing by. I ordered my first silkies yesterday so I'm watching everything I can find on them now.
Guildbrook Farm | Simple Sustainable Living we gave one of our chickens a butt shower and she was just as gentle but we didn't bust out the hair dryer, we did the best with towels and wood shavings but it was warm and dry so we know she'd be ok if we missed something. I was amazed how well "Gary" put up with the dryer, already in a strange place (indoors and water) she must have been very trusting of you, always handled with gentleness and love.
Oh no, I just saw the end, had no idea what happened, so sorry to hear :( . She was such a joy to watch, we just loved seeing the beautiful relationship you all had. Wishing you all peace in your hearts, you gave her a wonderful life.
I’d imagine different chickens have different preferences, just like people. Chickens will eat anything, so it’s not necessarily abnormal. I just hope she’s getting some vegetation in her diet too (fruits and veggies). Chickens are omnivores.
Ugh! I had 3 silkies and one by one they were taken. I cried and said no more, but here we go again. I got another a nicer chicken coop, and two silkies, so we will see how it goes. the video is so cute.
I am very impressed with your bird handling. I can tell Gary has been handled very kindly by your family. I would never have thought that anyone could put a chicken in a sink full of water like that and with know fuss either. What if you had a big goose? Would the goose protect the chickens from the hawks? I enjoy your videos, thanks for sharing.
She was a beautiful bird, and I know how heartbroken you were at losing her, the video you posted straight after was the first GF video I saw. She looked really cute & fluffy by the time you finished grooming her, I wonder if it's the same as dogs? when you're sure they're all properly dry and let them out of the bathroom, they immediately start rubbing themselves into the carpet & rolling all over, they'd do it in the garden too, straight for the grass & flower beds with the 'push & roll'. I don't think they like being as white and fluffy as we do. lol.
Very nice gentle spa for Gary, I'm going to be getting a few silkies for their gentleness and chickens for eggs later this year. I didn't think about the possible of poop getting on them from other chickens. Do they usually stay clean and if they do get dirty can they clean themselves or should I make it a routine to bath the silkies. I'm so sorry to hear about Gary, very sad for Gary and your family. That's a nervous feeling about having chickens and silkies there are hawks and coyotes in the country where I'll be living but I think a very large movable enclosure with a chicken fence roof should help to deter predators.
Just remember silkies don't lay well. If you are getting better layers for eggs there could be fighting due to laying hens (since bantams are ornamental, they are not laying hens) being bigger. My silkies get along great with my bigger birds but keep that in mind. Hope this helps. Have fun with your chickens!
@raymmond caple Been having our Silkie and chickens from them being a day old they are doing great and full grown, we trim near our silkie hen’s eyes so she can see.
@Charcoal The Chicken Been having our Silkie and chickens from them being a day old they are doing great and full grown, all hens including Silkie hen are laying eggs beautifully. Our Silkie hen lays a few a week.
I'm so sorry for your loss :( I have three white silkie hens and some other varieties of white hens .... hawks are one of my fears for them all .... I had a white hen taken by a hawk when I was a child also ... I feel your pain. .... again I am so sorry :(
I just noticed this was 7 years old! I got 4 Easter Egger chicks this year. Two for me and 2 for another chicken friend. She has silkies and this year they got broody so she surprised me with 2. I am so excited to have them! I have 9 regular chickens so these are going to be pets! Just hoping for hens but doesn't matter if they are bachelor roos! One is quite a character so much that I haven't named it yet. But I am definitely naming this chick Gary! Great video!
For hawks: Stretch 1/4"cable ten feet apart 6 to 8 feet off the ground, Two or three and hawks and owls will avoid the area. The cable can be 100' long . Use three and keep 20' X 100' free of flying birds.
How about one of those big umbrellas that are used to shade patio tables? You could use the base and make a tripod with a hole in it to hold it up. If you put the tripod thingy on wheels you can move around when needed, but it would provide the chickens something to run under to avoid predatory birds. Just don't extend the pole up high, keep it short ( four feet off the ground maybe) the chickens could run for cover and the predators would have no good angle at which to get to them from the sky...
It's a pity that she was hunted by a falcon, but better this than to die for a slow long disease. Two of my 3 budgies (the females) died for different diseases. It was very sad... :(
It looked like she liked the bath. Thank you for your videos. We are just getting started on our journey of trying to get out of the city and find a homestead of our own. Your videos and others like you that have posted videos on youtube are a great inspiration to us and a load of information on what to do and what to expect. :)
I'm a total free range *chicken farmer* and I have 8 new silkies after seeing this I'm thinking about making a silkie pen, they are so vulnerable. But I don't know how fair that is (to keep them shut up) what do you suggest? I have a donkey but he's no good against hawks!
Dang that was unexpected... Sad... Would it help to have some kind of netting over the chicken pen? I bought one at Lowes to keep birds out of my garden.
We thought about it but it just isn't practical with our current setup. Plus we had some bad experiences with bird netting (on our berry bushes) that would trap snakes and song birds. Won't use it again.
In the fiftiesand sixties you used to be able to get a attachment that went onto your hair dryer it was like a fabric shower cap that women would put on after putting rollers in their hai and it had a connection that allowed you to plug your hair dryer into the cap when you turned your dryer on it would fill the cap with warm air bathing the hair in rollers my friends son who shows his chickens uses one that his mum found at a thrift store and it works really well at drying his birds after washing for shows
My son insists on a grave for our chickens. We have a growing area in our yard dedicated to chickens who we've lost. The only ones missing are the baby chicks that hawks take away. I try not to name any chickens. I call them all "chicken". We have 6 buff Orpington's in the Flock of 11, I can tell them all apart, the kids name the ones they can differentiate. On saying that I do cry when we lose one. I'm usually the only one crying though as I take the time to connect with them and cuddle the ones that let me. I don't know if its love they have for you but you know when they feel safe and comfortable around you and seek your affection ( and food) when they notice you, so that's close enough I suppose.
+Duncan Cunningham I'm sorry for your loss as well. I think it's hard to not get attached at some level, no matter how hard you try not to. Thanks for commenting
That is the sweetest video and the saddest ending. I am so sorry to hear that you lost her, she was such a little darling. 😢
I loved the gentle kindness in your hands and your reassuring voice. I'm very sorry for your family's loss.

What a little lover she was. She blessed your family with her sweet little spirit and in turn, you loved her and made her life worthwhile.

We use mason line now - works great
Yes that will work. The eagles and hawks can see it and know they will be tangled so they do not even try.

Make sure to get their hair done, because if it gets too long they cant see very much.
Gary is one lucky bird. You are a loving lady!!
+Marlene Guth We like to think she had good life while with us
I'm so sorry for your loss :( I have three white silkie hens and some other varieties of white hens .... hawks are one of my fears for them all .... I had a white hen taken by a hawk when I was a child also ... I feel your pain. .... again I am so sorry :(
We are going to miss her. She was one-of-a-kind
Great video!
im soo sorry abbout garry and you just made me more exited abbout my mun getting silkies
once again i know by how she acted gary loved you
For hawks: Stretch 1/4"cable ten feet apart 6 to 8 feet off the ground, Two or three and hawks and owls will avoid the area.
+Dawn Finiff We created little "fallout shelters" for them on the ground. The hawks are just quick.
Omg, just watched this and such a sad ending 😥
It's a pity that she was hunted by a falcon, but better this than to die for a slow long disease. Two of my 3 budgies (the females) died for different diseases. It was very sad... :(
I cant believe you are giving a chicken a bath.. Its adorable. :)
She had so much poop stuck in her poor little feathers. She loved the bath
I use chicken wire as a fence and put netting over their whole run. I let them out when I am outside.
A predator proof run will resolve this, and when you free range them just be outside with them. Put them back in the run when you can't be with them.
Sorry to hear that.
Wow talk about a bummer. You know I worry about the same thing at my house. But what can you do? Sorry to hear the sad news.
How often do you bathe her?
Dang that was unexpected... Sad... Would it help to have some kind of netting over the chicken pen? I bought one at Lowes to keep birds out of my garden.
We thought about it but it just isn't practical with our current setup. Plus we had some bad experiences with bird netting (on our berry bushes) that would trap snakes and song birds. Won't use it again.
Condolences for your loss... she took the bathing and blow-drying with such a calm dignity.
She surprisingly loved it!
Oh no!!! I was so happy watching Gary then ughhhhhhh! So sorry you lost her
What a terrible ending to such a beautiful video.
In the fiftiesand sixties you used to be able to get a attachment that went onto your hair dryer it was like a fabric shower cap that women would put on after putting rollers in their hai and it had a connection that allowed you to plug your hair dryer into the cap when you turned your dryer on it would fill the cap with warm air bathing the hair in rollers my friends son who shows his chickens uses one that his mum found at a thrift store and it works really well at drying his birds after washing for shows
Gary the hen?
