not gonna lie, i almost cried in a interview of hers, where she talked about how 'camera roll' was written, she said that in a "bored and sad" night she scrolled to far up in her camera roll, and found memories she didn't really want to, then she was passing by a piano she has in her home, and 3 keys kinda speaked to her (she's not really a pianist, she said that she didnt even know what those keys where) and these 3 keys made a beautiful chord that made she start crying
this was like late at night, and she immediatly called the guys who helped her with the record (golden hour aswell) and they wrote the song in that very night
I LOVEEEEE how this came about and the song omg, literally so 21st century problems and in a song how did no one think about doing this before???! Hahahaa
Did Ben just say he didn't like EASIER SAID, that's in my Top 3...I loved this album so much..it's like a reflection of real world and experience most people go through!!
I love Cherry Blossom for kind of a strange reason, it’s obviously a gorgeous song but when I was 9 my mom, step dad and I moved from Georgia to Japan (military) and I didn’t know what Cherry Blossom trees were until I saw one for the first time and it blew my mind, it was just so gorgeous. I know that’s random but I always think of that when I hear that song. Angel & Good Wife are also some of my absolute faves❤️❤️
Kacey really is crafting art we are able to listen to. So unique and it’s almost like she is creating her own genre with this one. Every single one of her albums are masterpieces including Star Crossed! Please listen to Same Trailer Different Park and Pageant Material too! Soooo good!
she also talked about the last song, its a cover from a very old song, i dont remember exacly the name of the women, but the first one that wrote the song, kinda used it as a suicide note, it talks about how life gave her everything, the good and the bad, and then it was covered by another woman years later, that gave it another meaning, and then this song found her during one of her mushroom trips (yes shes very into a hallucinogenics) and this song touched her in a very important time, in the song iirc there's parts from both of the previous recordings, and her cover, its so beautiful
her interview with zane on apple music really explains the journey and meaning behind the album. I dont really see this as a divorce album as many have said. it's an album about her continued journey. ben keeps mentioning he wants more anger in the music, well she sounds pretty angry to me. angry at herself for the marraige not working. nothing salacious, no scandal or cheating. it just didnt work out that's all. being angry doesnt mean being loud or aggressive, especially when you might be mad at yourself the most. but hey, what do I know. music is open to interpretation. we see, hear and feel things differently because we connect to them in our own way, even when the artist means something else. also, i've listened to the full album at least 10-13 times in 3 days. it's awesome and she's great.
i really like your take on this! not how i looked at all, so it's so nice to read another perspective. i think because im so used to different types of songs when it comes to this type of content it just wasnt hitting how i needed it too, ive listened to the album a few more times now and def love it a lot more! i think its the old, going in with a expectation and when its not met you jerk away a bit.
@@bennshouts, wow, thank you for your reply. sometimes I can get on my soap box about silly things. keep up the good work on your channel. your videos are fun to watch and you definitely have a fan in LA looking.
Great reaction, dude!!! I agree a lot with what you said, I'm a Kacey fan, but also I wanted at least ONE angry track. And even tracks that I'm not in love, I really like the vibe and atmosphere.
I heard the final effect in “Gracias a la Vida” as demonic, which oddly made me feel for her on a deep level for the first time on the album, and made me appreciate the album more the second time I listened to the whole album. Break-ups- let alone divorces- can take you to very dark places, especially in this era, which, as she sings in other tracks, is RIFE with users and just really disingenuous people. It’s one thing to have really beautiful music- sad, happy, pretty, moody- portray her feelings, but the hard-boiled, demonic voice effect, which is played alongside her normal voice, take me to the really monstrous part of her mind, that is truly depressed about the divorce and post-marriage, post-WILD success dating. It’s really hard to think of anything ugly when listening to or looking at Kacey (she’s just absolute beauty and talent and sparkle, even in the video for “Justified,” when she’s sad), and the voice effect is the first time she doesn’t sound like an angel. Like you said, and others have said, there isn’t much anger in the album, or as much bitterness and sass as there was in “High Horse” (though “Breadwinner” is INCREDIBLE, part of me thinks that she’s singing about every eligible bachelor, post-Golden Hour success, not just her ex-husband, necessarily), and this “ugly” effect, to me, did something in its place that I appreciate. I’m still working it out in my head…
what you said was not right nor wrong... BUT, it pretty much indicates on how ppl listen to music back then and then going to the present.... and maybe the future (which why the last parts sound more autotune-y and quite robotic because of the vocoder). And she's really smart for that. A pure art indeed.
I recognized the evolution, as you mentioned, of how music sounded. But out of all of the effects she could have used on the contemporary section, she chose a very demonic-sounding effect. She had many options for the “today” phase of the song that would have fit the bill- others that were prettier and less jarring- and she chose this one. I can’t help but read into it further than the obvious evolution everyone is recognizing, since it is so jarring.
@Emily Flahive another interesting aspect of that song is that it was the Chilean songwriter Violeta Parra's last song written apparently as a sort of suicide note, although it is a song being grateful for life and everything it gives you. You're right: she did have other options to choose futuristic sounds for the last phrase but they are low, almost demonic tones. It almost sounds like how life can kinda weigh on you and wanna pull you into the undertow, and the songwriter evidently got pulled by her demons to take her life. Ultimately the song is still so beautiful, at best in the context of life maybe peace can be made from something that sounds so scary? I love how this song gives so many layers
Hey love these reactions ! Have you ever heard of Yebba? Released her debut after 5 years in the making called Dawn named after her mother who died by suicide. Album touches on a lot of the stages of grief and she's honestly one of the best vocalists I've ever head.
Yoooo I definitely wanted some rage too out of a break-up album lol you know the five stages of grieving or whateverrr but oh well I guess breadwinner is as angry as Kacey gets or as much as she's willing to show. It wasn't what I was expecting so I need more time with it, but my favorites are definitely breadwinner and there is a light. The ending.. as you would say not sure I'm "super keen" on, but alas I'm reckoning. P.s. that's what you get when you let your heart win 😔✌️✨ we love a Paramore reference in this house

This is definitely an album that is bettered by repeated listens. I'm a huge Golden Hour fan and my first listen to this album was somewhat underwhelming. I continued to listen and it ended up being one of my top albums of 2021. Just as a little plug, if you're interested to know my other favourite albums of 2021, I put together a video over on my channel ;) Great reaction though, Ben. Recently stumbled onto your channel and really enjoying the content, especially the Bjork reactions. I'm always fascinated seeing people listen to her music for the first time, ha.

You're exactly right with good wife she wrote that before she got married and if you watch her movie it pretty much shows everything you mentioned southern American values when married
even tho the lyrics are quite deep and sad, i was hoping for some more sad sounding songs, you know i love me some sad boy hours, but idk maybe its not really her kind of sound, even in a situation like this one
Tried to like this album, but the only song I remotely enjoyed was Angel. Not a fan of the production at all. And I thought most of the choruses were downright horrible, especially on Breadwinner. I hope Kacey makes a rootsy country album in the future and makes a comeback.
With reference to the cause of her divorce, there’s not been a lot explained. They both stated that it was a mutual divorce and that they both just weren’t happy. There were rumors that went around that her ex-husband wasn’t very happy with her level of success after Golden Hour. He’s a country singer too but he’s not had a lot of success.
On the other hand, a number of the songs exist to allow the story to transition. The first set of songs she wrote were likely to help her express her feelings and healing and anger and sadness. The second set of songs were likely written after she realized that she could stylize the album to act as a story. Songs like Camera Roll and If This Were a Movie… existed for this purpose. The first five songs can sound weird because of the fact that she’s writing about being in love after having already been divorced. So I’m sure writing them wasn’t necessarily her easiest task.
I think the most important thing is that 80% of this album was purely written to express her emotions and heal. So like they weren’t necessarily written to impress people. If her followers love the music, amazing! If not, that’s okay because ultimately the music is written for herself.
not gonna lie, I was disappointed when I listen to it. It's not a bad album at all, but it doesn't hit the mark for me. Too many short tracks, I just couldn't felt most of it :p Great reaction tho!
Not gonna lie, I liked her other albums, but this one, in my opinion, is awful. The lyrics are probably the lowest point, same goes for the production.
