Had to watch this again today just to appreciate Alex's efforts. Thanks so much for taking us on your voyages. Please know we truly enjoy and appreciate it.
If you look at the complete movie you will see that Hugo Boss is heeling much more than "Banque Populaire". This is due to his missing foil. This must be very uncomfortable. Despite all these, Alex is still a few miles behind Armel. Alex is just the best sailor in the world. Go Alex GO. Cheers from Belgium.
@eam lfn Just look at 3:25, we can clearly see that the foil is missing. Just compare to the other foil which is in a non extended position, even if the sail is hidding a little bit the view, we should see the starbord foil if it was there ! :)
absolutely amazing effort, he kept his chin up and pushed to the limit. if the foil hadn't broke he would have smashed it and realised his dream. fingers crossed for 2020/2021 good luck Alex
2:55 amazing !! Alex is great, always optimistic and smiling ! Many thanks to F732 Nivose's helicopter crew for the video and conversation with Alex. Great job you all guys ! Alex is again #1 (by 4,5 nm). Hope another frigate will meet you in the south pacific to get more news and amazing images from Alex's race.
Absolutely fabulous! And this... all day... all night, then... another all day, all night! Fabulous boat, fabulous skipper. King Neptune please give us Starboard tack all the way back from Cape Horn!!!
It struck me the relationship AT has with helicopters is profound; his dad being a rescue pilot, his heartbreak at knowing it would be impossible for him to be a pilot for ophtamological reasons, the technique for mind adjustements imagining a difficult situation from a metaphorical overview by a helicopter looking down and examining an issue "from a distance'to find an objective solution, and this footage especially, which I believe cements Alex as one of the greatest legends in sailing history. I am so heartbroken neither he, nor Clarisse Crémer will be racing the Vendée Globe in 2024.
Amazing! I´ll keep my fingers crossed, whatever happens Alex like every other sailor in the southern ocean is the best what could happen for sailingsports. Fantastic Pictures from Fr. Naval Marine, thx. Greetings from Germany, and God bless the Sailors!
Go Alex Go, just got the update on the leading boat positions & your back in front ;0) this is fantastic video footage by the French Navy & Film teams. Stay safe but fast Alex & Hugo Boss...............
Coolest thing I've seen a French navy helicopter do since one picked me out of a raft, 200 miles into Biscay :-). Wicked video. Shows the phenomenal performance of these boats. Amazed that these guys can pilot them solo. Here's hoping for a safe passage home. Relief to see Kito de Pavant got picked up OK.
Very well done Alex. Clearly a greater sailor than I, and an amazing boat, but I would way prefer to see you clipped on in such conditions... Keep safe.
bloody hero I was in the royal navy and went across the "pond" a few times on bigger boats than yours. respect sailor respect to french for the video and audio .
That is a beautiful boat, and it is so good to see her moving through the Southern Ocean so well. There is a lot of money in that boat, but that is what it takes to run solo. Looking sharp, Alex!👍😎
@b1itsjustme your 61 is nothing you dont respect people opinion, and try to introduce your inexperience in bad words ,give your opinion to yourself,i dont bilieve in your 61.
2:35 I wonder if the next evolution in saiilboat design will be to have the boat be an actual submarine just beneath the water, with just the masts and sails sticking up above the surface? :-)
F732 Nivose crew always cruise this ocean, no matter the season, and the see conditions (it s summer there as you can see ;-) !). Its home port is St Denis de La Réunion. They respect very much Alex and this other competitors cos they know how this part of Indian ocean is hard to sail
I have enormous respect for all of those braving the conditions down there - summer or winter it is a fearsome place. Alex and Armel are at the top of their game and so are the French Navy. Superb.
In certain positions you can see the profile of the bow driving the boat under and slowing her down, instead of planing up out of the wave on the bow profile. You have to wonder why the boat was designed that way. The winning boat has a different profile. I think Alex achieved his result the hard way, with one hand tied behind his back. The foil didn't help, but IMHO the design of the boat has this fairly obvious flaw anyway.
I've watched this video many times and its just as amazing 11 months later. But I'm perturbed by the display of l;ack of safety evident by no safety harness. Ive lost 5 friends to the ocean...all would be still with us if they'd been wearing a safety harness. Think of all the young sailors who watch this video and how they might be inspired.
just an observation, sailing seems to play with the impossible to a degree I'm not yet comfortable with. from keel to sail the balance (shared mentally) looks border line nuts. that said, I'm completely infatuated and hope to save enough to try it on my terms.
No doubt this race made Thomson a living legend. I still get goosebumps watching the boat heeling like this after seeing this footage countless times.
Go Alex, and a huge thanks to the helicopter crew for the amazing footage....
Cheers from Melbourne Aus..
also rooting for him from australia!
I don’t think I scare easily, but how he moved about the boat was terrifying! Now I want that boat
It looks like he has a harness on, but he’s not attached to anything.

its not missing, its either underwater or it is tucked in.
Hugo Boss is oversailed a little, I suppose, but Captain is crazy.
@@sethgcullen " the foil is gone"

This brought tears to my eyes. Fantastic sailing. Fantastic footage.

Great footage, Alex, remarkable performance from Hugo Boss despite the missing foil. Stay safe, take good care of yourself, be happy and All the Best!
Brilliant. Alex looks like he is in total control and good that French TV are covering it. They are all super heroes.
Richard Fletcher
Yeah.
They are doing it for free and for save life.
whats your problem, man? or just trolling?
TheCreo75
It must be a problem if I criticise calling him/them "super heroes" ?
What's your problem instead moron?
Yeah, youre relativizing his attitude doing it for money and not saving the world? :) just enjoy sailing, dont be moron
Great footage. These Vendee Globe sailors are amazing. Really buries the bow a few times and you can tell HB misses that starboard foil!
Hey Alex I'm very excited again, you are kicking ass. 34 miles from Amel.? Wow.
Fabulous looking boat

Sure is a wet boat! I've sailed down there, but at a leisurely 6 kts. It was a great thrill even at that speed.
Fantastic footage. Great Union Flag waving.
Spectacular.
Fantasztikus!!
This is sailing, deal with what u get and keep boat speed up, full marks from skipper john
Best sailing footage I 've ever watched !
I could not see clearly if Alex is connected to the life line & Hope he is...
I don't see a tether. He was walking around free of any connection to the boat other than the nonslip soles on his boots.
I thought he donned a recoil tether when on deck but didn't see one...
was that mono @ 70 degrees or what?!!!
A real sailor !!
Great shots from the French Heli crew - a pity he couldn't understand their English
Remarkable
Mad Respect!
Absolute bad lad.
Are these guys solo? If so unbelievably brave especially riding 6metre waves down wind around Cape Horn in the dark!
sometimes 15 to 30 meters waves length 400 500 meters
True hero. No safety. But I guess he knows better.
I'm wondering if he has a waterproof remote for his autopilot in his jacket ? He's not tethered...
Crazy, crazy mans...
Alex, your doing good. Well done.

Even the guys on the helicopter were shocked when he was carrying the flag. They couldnt believe where he was standing.
é muita coragem os cara são extremamente preparados
Does he have a life line there? I cant see one, it looks like it's only sticky feet stopping him from swimming home!
c'est juste extraterrestre bravo
very cool
Should have harness attached all times
he was attached
@@bonvoyage5377 I can not see that ..
I think he does not need armchair sailors

Without that foil on the starboard side it's really burying itself.
What a bad ass!
Super image super bateau super skipper

that's racing !
