  • Last time I was talking about what gearbox I would fit into the Cortina and decided that an MX5 box would be the best option for me, now I have to figure out how I'll mount these 2 together!
I've never made an adapter plate but so if you're interested in learning how I did it give this a watch!

Brilliant video Jim...the plate looks perfect, maybe think about getting it zinc passivate gold finished ....won't cost a bomb and would do justice to your workmanship...well done .russ

Thanks Russ! I hadn't thought about zinc plating - I'll see who can do it locally, good call!

Well done, as I was watching I did wonder what approaches there were, even the possibility that you could mill the flange off of the Mazda bell housing and create another one to suit the Ford, of course would mean any case damage would entail fabricating another "customised" housing to fit another gearbox. The adaptor plate has the merit that a scrapyard Mazda box will bolt straight in. Of course watching you do the work from the comfort of my settee it did look like there maybe some merit in tilting the gearbox slightly to one side. I look forward to seeing your progress.

That's an interesting take on milling the face off, I had originally looked at the possibility of taking the bellhops off the Mazda box and making a flange that would have allowed the 2000e bell house to be used but as you've pointed out is that if anything happens to the box then I've got to repeat the process.
As for tilting that's something I hadn't thought about doing but I'll bear that in mind when I start trying to mount it in the shell if I have major clearance problems.

@@jimbuilds thanks for the reply, it was fascinating to watch you do this. Of course I know it is different to be out in your garage actually doing the work. Watching the process a few things occurred to me. If the original template was mild steel with just the hole to reference the first motion shaft you could make some punches from silver steel rod to snugly fit the bell housing holes of each gearbox. I bet the centres could then be punched very accurately. Not criticism at all, just throwing ideas out there. Once you have the design in CNC and proven I bet you could sell the plates. 2000E boxes are changing hands for silly prices these days, you could be rich by Xmas!

Constant coolant-feed to that little blade would have been nice!

Jim what was wrong with the 2000E gearbox? ( mine seemed nice in my 2L estate but that was 40 odd years ago now…)

The casing has some work threads which created a vibration which got worse, I had started to get the parts together for a rx8 6 speed gearbox swap but it's a huge gearbox!
I like using the Cortina as a daily/ summer car so I need an extra gear fro cruising on the motorway, the 2000e gearbox is ok and can be repaired easily but it would restrict how much I use the Cortina which I don't want to do.
