Bike ITB manifold design - EFI ep2
Having decided to keep the Cortina's engine naturally aspirated I decided to use CBR600 ITB's but I'll need a manifold - no problem, we'll just design one!

Fuel Injection on a classic engine - the basics ep1
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.16 часов назад
I've wanted to convert my Cortina's engine to fuel injection for years, now I need to rebuild the engine I thought I'd go all in and update the fuelling and ignition to a modern day system. To kick things off I figured I'd do a very basic overview of what's required regarding sensors and how they'll be fitted to the engine to get it to run. #classiccars #speeduino #fuelinjection #projectcars

What was that grinding? Mk1 Cortina GT
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.2 месяца назад
After the problems I had last week I down tools and tried to come up with a plan on finding the grinding sound coming from the gearbox and then fixing it. Fortunately a few of you had the same idea and @MadFordEngineering gave me some good tips and things to try to sort it out.

Amazing job Jim, another informative video. Really interested in this concept.
Nice ! looks great
Looking good Jim, very keen to follow this project
Really nice work, well done!!!
Thank you!
Happy days Jim. Im in.
Thanks Benjamin 👍
go for it i,m watching
Thanks Charles 👍
Awesome getting after it I got like four different projects and four different kinds of transmissions and I'll be doing something similar to make one of them to work. Have a good one mate
Thanks! It sounds like you're quite busy! What projects are you working on?
Don't see why you need any cold start mechanism? the fuel map will compensate for low engine temp with longer injection fire times? Not familiar with bike throttle bodies but you don't let more air in for cold start, need richer mixture not leaner ( hence the old carb term Choke which orignally would reduce choke size to get a richer mixture from the carb jets - later carbs had actual enrichment mechanisms instead of literally choking the engine) letting extra air in is more of an idle control system? at least on older non electric throttle body cars where you need to be able to keep the idle speed stable if the alternator or AC loads go up. What ECU are you planning on using? would have though most these days can handle drive by wire so can use a modern e-gas pedal and throttle actuator which would remove the need for an idle speed/load control valve of some sort which would usually be used with an older bowden actuated throttle body.
I'd just assumed I would but this is more stuff I need to learn particularly with mapping. As for ecu I'm thinking speeduino, it has better ignition options over the megasquirt and plays into building this on a budget. As for the throttle pedal, the original setup is purely mechanical linkages. I think a cable would be a simple solution though.
Cheapest is just use a Zetec coil pack , costs about 40 quid, put on a bracket where the dizzy was ?? ignition leads then also look "period"
That's exactly what I was planning on, I think its a VW coil pack but it looks the same but doesn't use the ford edis to control it
Not the cheapest way, but I love the solution of the Jenvey fake Weber throttle bodies for an injection conversion for the period "tuned" look
I'm the same, they're well engineered as you can't tell the difference. If I get the chance to upgrade to them at a later date the hard work would have been done already at least.
Lock out the distributor and use that for cam position.
That's a great idea, I have a spare lucas dizzy body that I don't mind sacrificing.
There are some japanese cars ( Toyota?) that have a cam sensor on the original dizzy drive ??
@@jabberwockytdi8901 The Suzuki G10A 3 cylinder engine also uses a distributor to fire the ignition.
Hi i have fuel injected two different ford xflows. One with Nissan GTIR throttle bodies and the other with a single throttle body plenum. Both worked great. You'll love the injection. The non xflow has a better cylinder head in alot of ways. It will go really well!
That's interesting about the GTIR ITBS's, of the 2 which did you find easier to install? I had thought about a single throttle body inlet originally but I like the sound of ITB's! What did you do for the trigger wheel and sensor mounting - I've seen kits but they're nearly £200 and I don't think it's good value for money if I'm honest.
The three main parameters are engine Load / speed and temperature, getthose correct and it;ll run. The other sensors will make it run sweet. Interesting what your doing ,I'm hooked.
That's a much better way of putting it! I think there's a lot of potential in the old pre crossflow and the only reason I wanted a zetec was for the convenience of modern fuel management etc. on paper they work the same way (suck, squeeze, bang, blow). So why not try adding that stuff to it. I have done a fair bit of homework in the last 2 weeks so hopefully I'll have some cool stuff to share soon! Thanks for watching Stephen 👍
In my experience with this engine a rev limiter won't be required, the valves bounce and slow gas flow at about 6.5k RPM especialy with larger inlet valves if you go that far. Wasted spark is the way forward also. Looking forward to your progress.✌
@stephenwhite5057 I've not experienced float that I recall but the rev counter was always a bit vague!
This was a designed in safety feature. No chance of falling asleep at the wheel !
Excellent point! There's too much happening at once to get tired too! 😄
Very interested in seeing the progression with the new engine, enjoying your updates!
@WarrenArmstrong69 thanks Warren, I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out!
Do a leak down test . So much better and gives you a better idea of where it’s leaking, eg exhaust, intake, rings plans or head gasket. The kits are really cheap to buy now
That's a good idea, I do need one for other jobs sp I'll look into it 👍
125psi thats good,my hillman is around 80 on all.
Crickey! Maybe a turbo would help? 🤔 Normally 125 psi would pass but when the others are running 150 it's not right- it can be fixed though
My wife likes your glasses ❤
Thank you! They're budget ones from specs savers as I have form for wrecking glasses! 😀
It's coming together nicely, remember even full time mechanics take time to get things done and they get to do this every day. You already have a gearbox change down to minutes, thats wild😂 Takes me a day to get my 1200 bug engine out, another day for gearbox out, another day for gearbox in, another day for engine in.😢 Thats without fixing anything! If I win lottery, 4 post lift is No.1 on my list.😂 I need to work on my Dads 65 1500 deluxe estate thats not run in 3 years. No ignition light comes on dash, but it tries to turn over for a second,I think voltage regulator is wired wrong.
Thanks John, I hadn't thought about it like that. With things being busy outside of the garage I feel like I'd been abandoning Tina more recently but I have some motivation to address so problems that I've found over the last few years whilst I'm at it. I do like a bug, what's the 1200 like? The things I'd do for a bit more space and a 4 post lift! 😅 I'd be interested in hearing more about your Dad's estate though! Sounds like it's still running the Lucas dyno if it's got the regulator - I've spent a fair bit of time going through the wiring on mine so if you have any questions just ask 👍
I wish i could get my 62 mk1 consul cortina restored
Why not do it yourself?
@@jimbuilds ive not been well for some time three heart attacks so i cant handle the work now but maybe ill have the money one day
@@piratedjradio I'm sorry to hear that, my Dad went through similar 20 years ago having 2 in less than 6 months. It took some time but he was back on his feet after rehabilitation etc. I hope that you can get the help you need with yourself and your mk1 though.
@@jimbuilds Thanks mate the last one was during the pandemic and ive still not fully recovered , soon i hope
A great way to end my night shift with watching you driving the Cortina. Congratulations on the success of your first drive!
Thank Warren, I'm glad you've enjoyed watching tina. 👍
I'd be interested to buy a bell mount off you. Or if you had a file to share? Looks good did you measure the power improvement on a Dyno?
I can have a look into that, i haven't tested the performance changes though.
Well I'd be interested in one.
Silly putty less mess?
Hello Jim. I watched your videos on the Mx5 gearbox. I need to design a thrust bearing for a gearbox project. Do you have a feel of how much pressure is applied by the clutch release bearing? About how hard do you press the peddle? What are the pivot ratios of the peddle and clutch release arm.
Hi Jay, With regards to the clutch actuation Ii only looked into the bore of the slave cylinder which happened to be the same as the one on the Cortina's original so pressure wise it feels similar but i believe the mx5 has better feel over the movementof the pedal. I figured that would have been a good jumping off point if anything wasn't right I'd sort it in due course. I haven't measured the pivot ratio for that reason, I have the pedal details in a ford manual but I don't know if that's relevant for your project.
First time ive seen it with baked goods... seen it with grease...
I've seen it with grease and bread 😅
use this trick to save your dough
@@moto-bruvs666 only when your bearing is toast!
Or grease Or bread and grease 💪
@@Beartore I have heard grease is also good to use, I need to get a grease gun.
@jimbuilds I'm not being weird, but just swipe a bit of grease with your finger and pop it in. But overall, bread has what it takes. It's great when it works, makes you feel like you deserve a wee gold star 🌟 🤣
@@Beartore I don't get those often! I'll try it when I need to change the bearing next time
👍🏻
Just don't try it with wholemeal.... As mentioned below I first heard of this technique using heavy grease many moons ago !!!
We used to just put the grease gun in and pump.
Didn't cost much dough either.
Is that what they call a fullcrumb-bush? 🤔
😆 you only do this when the bearing is toast!
I’ve heard people talk about this many times before but never seen it done, so impressed to see it actually works
I was the same, it seemed like it was far fetched so figured I'd give it a try.
What brand of brick acid did you use?
Just some generic stuff from screwfix, nothing fancy.
Hola Jim te hablo desde argentina!! Lei que tenes el manual en pdf. Me lo podrias enviar ami tambien ? DEsde ya Muchas Gracias !!!
¡Hola! Gracias por ponerme en contacto, puedo enviarle un PDF por correo electrónico - por favor envíeme un correo electrónico a jim.buildsyt@gmail.com y le ayudaré!
Dad used it on the tvr chassis and said it wasn’t durable at all! Look at it wrong and it will chip.
I'm a little disappointed as its been good so far apart from a bit of damage on the jacking point. I think its because it's an old batch but even so!
Thanks for sharing Jim, great idea!
Youre welcome Warren 👍

Nice. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
@@jimbuilds Yes. And I forgot to like it, so I went back and did so. Take care friend.
It work Keep it up
Nice job, the part you cut down is the clutch release/thrust bearing pilot tube (as Reliant called it ---- I only know as I used convert earlier carbon thrust bearing clutches to bearing race thrust bearings and found this when researching the differences between the two types of clutch), it's purpose is to ensure the thrust bearing "presents" squarely to the diaphragm fingers.
Thanks for correcting me - I kept saying sleeve and it just didn't sound right but I couldn't think of a better name to call it, it makes sense about the thrust given what it's supporting. 👍
Bit late now but is the friction plate the right way around.the reason i ask is because the splind boss is offset in relation to the friction plate. I have just replaced the friction plate on my mk5 cortina and their is no marking on the clutch to say which side faces the flywheel and if its fitted arse way around the splined boss will be nearer the gearbox input shaft support boss. Another anomaly i found was that the new friction plate was actually 7 mm narrower on the splined boss.i contacted motomobil and they reckon it will be ok but i have kept the old friction plate as it only has 20 thou wear on it.
I've done that in the past when I used to work on race cars, Nobody wants to be ripping a car apart at 2AM because I got the clutch in the wrong way around! 😆 Fortunately the mazda clutch disc has it printed on it to say which face goes towards the transmission- even I can't bugger that up! 😆
@@jimbuilds trust Mazda to be different. The ford friction plate has flywheel side written on it and the aftermarket one I fitted had nothing written on it so it was a case of comparing the centre boss and working it out from there.🤔
At least it's marked! My AP clutch wasn't labelled but it you could tell instantly if it was the wrong way around as the splines on the plate have a defined offset.
hello mate, your vids are brilliant mate...no milling or lathes..bench fitting is the way forward...keep up all your good work...
Thanks for the kind words! As much as I enjoy hand filing I'd get so much more done with a lathe and a mill - I just need a bigger garage! 😆
Glad you found the issue, soon be on the road now.
Thanks Stephan - I nee ld to pull my finger out whilst the weather is nice!

The headline implies the car is a disaster? I drove one up and down the east coast of Australia and only disaster we had was a blown exhaust gasket on the way back from Bathurst races in 1973!! A really great car in its day ,and along with Escorts and Lotus engined versions Great in the day! shall
The work I had done recently had problems which all came together with 20 mins - I'd call that a disaster! That's a cool trip, Bathurst 1000 is on my list of races I want to see. I also need to visit Australia at some point.
