    i have been playing game consoles since the late 70s but the N64 did it for me i remember ordering the console and wave race the console turned up one day before the game but i went crazy running up and down the stairs in my house shouting i got it And i was about 24 at the time. And nothing has made me that happy.

      That's still a great set of games. S.O.T.E. is more of a nostalgic favorite of mine, being as it was one of three games I got on christmas morning with the system. Goldeneye would be higher on my list.

      You know what I thought was a very good overlooked game on the system? Duke Nukem Zero Hour. Sure, it took the series into third person but it's not like it was full of FPSes, either. The time travel mechanic, the raunchy humor (As much as Nintendo would allow at the time), and Duke's personality all make it a blast to play. I hear Time to Kill went with more of a puzzle centric focus so Zero Hour is definitely the more faithful of the two with a heavy emphasis on action.

    The Nintendo 64 is great, but have you ever heard of a hidden gem called Sonic 2? It was for a little-known system called the SEGA Genesis. I only heard about it from my distant third cousin whose name is TRUXTON. In all caps, just like that. It's written that way on her birth certificate.

      Miles Evans yeah exactly, I thought the same. It was actually really well done and this is coming from someone who is not the biggest fan of Pokémon out there, the only two main series games I've owned are silver and leaf green and two spin offs that was the mentioned pinball and pokken tournament. I did have a load of cards when I was younger too. But apart from that I never got in too the cartoons or films or anything and even so I loved that rhyming section

    The Goemon N64 games were how I got introduced to the series and have loved the hell out of it ever since. Shame there's so many others that are exclusive to Japan let alone the fact it's under the Konami umbrella so the franchise is pretty doomed :\

      Same here - I hadn't heard of that series before the 64. The N64 had some cool Japanese titles, plus I was at that age where I could start buying crap with my own money, so I was able to branch out. Goddamn shame about Konami...

    I had more than a few multiplayer battles on my N64, which was a big reason I liked the system. GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, No Mercy, Mario Kart, CBFD, Starfox and Battletanx were all great multiplayer games. Winback was a really underrated title, as well. Thanks for the Waverace and Shadows of the Empire love. I remember being so blown away being able to play the snowspeeder scene from Empire in the beginning. Very good second take on the N64, guys. \,,/ Now, how about TG-16/Gamecube second parts... please.

  • @seanmyster6
    @seanmyster6 7 лет назад +43

    I always felt that your first N64 video was one of your weaker ones, since you basically just reviewed a bunch of random racing games and skimmed over the more interesting titles in the N64 library. (not to say that racing games can't be interesting, but there was certainly a lot more to the system than that)
    This time, however, you reviewed a much better variety of games and gave each one the attention they deserved, so it was a sorely needed improvement.

    • @g1nobleteam
      @g1nobleteam 7 лет назад +2

      NERO the Falcom Fam Well get ready to pay the premium as N64 games aren't as cheap as I remember them being when I bought most of my collection, as something common like Super Mario 64 usually goes for 30 bucks whether retail, or some rando seller at the Flea Market who thinks they have "GOLD".

    • @TheJorus
      @TheJorus 7 лет назад +2

      I'm more interested in playing games on real hardware than collecting, so if they end up getting too expensive I can use flashcarts or if there is none, that one unit that can be used to pirate.
      It'd be nice to be able to collect some games though.

    • @g1nobleteam
      @g1nobleteam 7 лет назад +1

      NERO the Falcom Fam I honestly would go with the Flash Cart route, or an emulator to try out the games first, so that you can make a list of what games would be worth getting, then see if the prices aren't too insane for those games.

    • @TheJorus
      @TheJorus 7 лет назад +1

    Rogue Squadron has an infamous easter egg: If you type in an absurdly long, random password, you can unlock a Naboo fighter. The code was released after Episode 1 came out, and people were freaking out after all the secrecy surrounding the movie that this was hidden in a game released over a year before the movie hit theaters.

    Honestly, I am also getting sick of the current trend of games having to be more and more realistic. I know it is because modern consoles are capable of immersing us in a world that seems more and more life like, giving us possiblities we never thought possible. I mean when I first saw the PS2 I was astounded at the level of real life graphics. But there is a limit, as to when it gets too real and doesn't feel like a game anymore, but more like a real-life simulator that limits you, because it has to feel real, rather than make you feel free.

    I like this N64 episode more, there were lots of interesting
    games that I’ve wanted to play. The N64 is one of my favorite game consoles.
    Interestingly right before this episode I started playing Mystical Ninja
    starring Goemon. I was debating between Mystical Ninja starring Goemon or
    Castlevania 64. I’m planning to go into Castlevania 64 with the mentality of an
    action-adventure game rather than a classic Castlevania game similar to Mega
    Man 64 relative to classic Mega Man series.
    Could you guys do an episode on urban open world games? There
    are many urban open world games today such as Watch Dogs 2 and Mafia III, but
    bonus points for games made before or during the release of GTA III (Oct.
    2001). Some examples include (some may have already been covered):
    -Headhunter, Metal Gear-ish game set in future city similar
    to LA (Dreamcast (PAL) Nov. 2001)
    -Omikron: The Nomad Soul, Quantic Dream (Developers of games
    like Heavy Rain) game set in a futuristic city (Dreamcast June 2000)
    -Midnight Club: Street Racing, urban racer set in London and
    New York (PS2 Oct. 2000)
    -Midtown Madness 1, 2, and 3, urban racers set in Chicago
    for MM1, London and SF for MM2, and Paris and Washington D.C. for MM3 (PC May
    1999, PC Sept. 2000, Xbox June 2003)
    -Shenmue 1 & 2, free roam in Japan and Hong Kong
    respectively (Dreamcast Nov. 2000)
    -Takeshi’s Challenge, known to be a bad game
    where you can free roam in Japan, interact shops, and beat up any pedestrians
    including gangs and even your own family. It is kind of unbelievable that it
    was a Nintendo game during the 80’s that consist of domestic violence. It even
    got a Nintendo Seal of Quality (not that it means much). Might require English
    patch for full enjoyment (Famicom Dec. 1986).

      Masato Huehara The 3DS version is the same game, no new stages, but it looks a lot better than the original, and plays smoother due to the bump in framerate. It alongside Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask 3D are fantastic versions of N64 games.

    Hello friends, thank you for the new episode. Although I have to admit that I have little love for the N64 I am always happy to learn more about a console and its games.
    This summer I bought a 4K television to which my gaming PC is hooked up - it seems like more and more people have their PCs in their living rooms. Anyway, I immediately noticed the superb quality of this video and was about to check if the video is in fact in 4K, however, shortly before I got to that you said so in the video. I like it a lot, so thank you for the upgrade!

    • @linkno1
      @linkno1 7 лет назад +1

      I liked the generation at the time, but I find a majority of the games incredibly hard to go back to, probably because it was early days of 3D and a lot of the games just show their age so much since 3D games have developed.
      2D games and slower paced RPG's on the systems I can still go back to though. There was already a standard for 2D games so it was usually only visuals that may have aged and those RPG's didn't really suffer much since even a bad control scheme wouldn't harm the experience much since all they really were was walking around and cycling through menus.

    I bought the N64 the day it was released in this country. I remember being completely blown away by just how good Mario 64 was and there was absolutely nothing comparable to it on any home console at the time. Most of the first party games were excellent and the best games were light years ahead of what anybody was doing at the time (a bit like how Sega's '80s super scalar games were far beyond what anyone else was doing in the arcades). However, most of the third party games were crap and there were some really big holes in the N64's library (no good 3D beat 'em up to rival Tekken, only one good JRPG in my region). The release schedule was also incredibly pallid: There would typically be one incredible game released every other month (usually developed by Nintendo or Rare) and a smattering of mediocre (third party) ones.
    For me, the N64 occupies a fairly strange territory: On the one hand, the best games on the system were landmark titles right at the cutting edge of gaming (Mario 64, GoldenEye 007, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, F-Zero X among others), but on the other the library was small and there was an awful lot of chaff. I would say that I definitely had more fun with other consoles (SNES, Mega Drive, PSX and PS2), but the best games on the N64 are some of the best games I've ever played.

    The RDP's color/alpha combiner, basically a limited programmable graphics pipeline, was quite ahead of its time with fixed function being the norm otherwise until the GeForce 3 introduced pixel/vertex shaders. You could really pull off some nice effects with it if used properly. Some commands were up to the devs, but global commands existed to do everything basic. Programmers couId expand on the graphical capabilities by writing their own uCodes, basically sets of commands which set up the GFX FIFO. This is the story behind Factor5 - they wrote sophisticated custom uCodes to expand on the globals, and indeed pulled off some nice stuff as a result. Nothing I'd say, however, that couldn't be done with an existing uCode, such as Zelda's Fast3D EX2.
    The color combiner is a global function, and I wrote a color combiner editor within my Zelda 64 editor, and if you properly choose colors/alpha channels to blend (the equation is fixed unfortunately [colorA - colorB] * [colorC + colorD], ABC and D are the programmable portion - you can have colorA the color of texel0, or the currently stored primitive color (if in pipeline of course, you can choose between 16 potential color sources to blend), same for alpha, easily emulatable with a fragment shader of old), you can do some really neat things. Its highly optimized vertex/normal/color storage as well as efficient 64-bit bytecode commands which used each 56 bits (first 8 are cmd ID), or a combination thereof, to define the pipeline setup, it's a shame more devs didn't do pretty things with it. I suppose they did in a manner, since it trivialized things like geometry sorting for alpha, and practically every other graphics function that had been a pain to implement previously. CBFD is a wonderful example of the RDP used absolutely expertly.
